Due to the fact stands are not allocated to the various motoring Clubs that support this event, Liz & myself go to the park on the Saturday to stake our

claim for the Sunday get together. Two (2) new members signed up on the day, welcome to Richard Currie and to Pierre Le Roux. The day turned out to be just magic and only one small gust of wind came from nowhere and lifted one of the gazebos which leads me to mention to all our members…..tether your gazebos to something secure. It takes a very small gust to set up an embarrassing moment. Keep your eyes open and should you see a gazebo not secured, tap the owner on his/her shoulder and get it done. Next time I turn the key on my blue 144 will be for: The Cars in the Park Pietermaritzburg 20th / 21st May. Walk to Vryheid 9th/10th/11th June. It is the 10th year that André De Haan will be organizing this event. You haven’t driven this event yet ? – call André on 073 252 5127 and join The Walk. SAVVA Magnum Rally 9th thru 12th August. Organised by POMC and is a must for any classic car &/or bike enthusiast. Excellent organizing, beautiful roads & scenery and a bunch of good camaraderie. My experiences with Volvo cars - Went for a couple of test drives in other S40‘s and once my finances were in place I phoned him up Gerhard Claassen (Part one) telling him I had R140k to spend on a car. Of course being honest did not pay because he sold a car for It started with a yellow 850T5R in a magazine. R140k to me that was worth only R127k on the

books, so the guy from the bank indicated on the Sitting in the doctor’s reception paging through a papers that this was a 2.0T S40 with auto box to get car magazine my eye caught the side view of the the funding approved I only found this out later. most beautiful car I have ever seen. It was love on first sight, which started in 1995. The straight lines, But be it as it may I was now the proud owner of a the carbon black rims and the cheeky tail fin made Volvo and started living this long-time dream of an everlasting impression on me. I wanted this car, mine driving a Volvo. Three weeks after I bought but what car was this… on closer look I saw it… the car our family went on holiday to Wilderness in Volvo, but a performance version of one of their the Western Cape. Shortly after our trip I noticed models. that the fuel consumption went up a bit and took the

car back to the dealer. I was informed later that day Volvo you say, but from which country… aaah that one of the valves was damaged and that the Sweden… and there and then it was over. In the cylinder head had to came off. I got my car back 6 previous four years of my life, studying towards a weeks later, not a good start at all, but I decided to mechanical engineer, I heard this name on a couple stick with the car. Later that same year I took the of occasions during the course of my studies. They car for a scheduled service and casually mentioned are renowned for the bearings they manufacture, that the gear shifts were not as smooth as with the sound equipment, art, steel manufacturing and now cars I test drove, guess what, that afternoon I was this too… cars… Volvo cars. informed that they are going to replace the gearbox My first car was however not a Volvo, it was a with a new gearbox. And so it went on with this car, second hand 1.1 Uno Fire. Starting my career and every now and again something will break or I will starting a family, money was tight and I had to wait complain about something and they would fix it.

8 years before I could buy my first Volvo in All I could think was that the previous owners must November 2003, which was a white my 2001 S40 have abused this car, looking at the tow bar they 2.0, complete with grey leather seats, front spots, must have been towing BIG boats and caravans tail spoiler, mags and of course a tow bar… a very behind this Volvo, because this was not a standard BIG tow bar. Volvo tow bar. It was for sure a huge upgrade on the Uno and a very beautiful car, but man did it give me a lot of sh1t. I But still I stuck with my Volvo, because overall it bought the car with +-76000 km on the clock from was a well-engineered car with good looks and a Volvo Tygervalley, it had two previous owners and nice drive. It took me +- 60000 km to sort out all of course both owners were “grannies” using the car the worn and broken parts and from there on it was to go to church only. just a pleasure to drive to work and back with my car every day! Did I mentioned that I stayed in One thing I was very glad about was the Durbanville at the time and worked in Paarl? I maintenance plan that came with the car and man o drove my S40 for the next three years and decided man I had to use it. Without this I would probably to upgrade to a new S40. went bankrupt quite early in my life. I started building my relationship with the sales man seven By then my car had +-179000 km on the clock… months prior to the purchase of my car. not far from the BIG service! To be continued….

Technical electrical query…..Amazon At a glance the fuse box looked pretty normal. The back end had once side very neatly potted but the electrics – Howard bates resistance between the terminals on the potted underside was low – no resistance!!

A fellow Club member with his newly acquired a I scratched out the epoxy and found that all the very original 1970 122S had a rather very unusual contacts had been soldered together using a piece electrical “glitch”. Something that at the time of wire. appeared to be a complete mystery, something I have never seen before! See the picture below. When starting the engine, the parking lights would illuminate and remain illuminated until one turned the ignition off……or if the parking lights were selected on the ignition would not turn the engine off.

I pulled off the steering wheel, gained access to the ignition switch and began trouble shooting the contacts. All checked per spec. As most of you 122 experts know, the live from the battery goes past the light switch, then past the ignition switch, then to the fuse box.

Fault therefore must be in the wiring?? Bussed out each wire in the loom to see if there was any shorting between the wires…. nothing. (this has caught me before when experts install extra lights Now, this Amazon belonged to another Club or radios – and the first wire that is closest to the member previously and I need to installers hands gets butchered and very seldom know…………why would you do this??? correctly insulated).
