April 1 & 3, 2021 Walt Disney Theater
April 1 & 3, 2021 Walt Disney Theater FAIRWINDS GROWS MY MONEY SO I CAN GROW MY BUSINESS. Get the freedom to go further. Insured by NCUA. OPERA-2646-02/092719 Opera Orlando’s Carmen On the MainStage at Dr. Phillips Center | April 2021 Dear friends, Carmen is finally here! Although many plans have changed over the course of the past year, we have always had our sights set on Carmen, not just because of its incredible music and compelling story but more because of the unique setting and concept of this production in particular - 1960s Haiti. So why transport Carmen and her friends from 1820s Seville to 1960s Haiti? Well, it all just seemed to make sense, for Orando, that is. We have a vibrant and growing Haitian-American community in Central Florida, and Creole is actually the third most commonly spoken language in the state of Florida. Given that Creole derives from French, and given the African- Carribean influences already present in Carmen, setting Carmen in Haiti was a natural fit and a great way for us to celebrate Haitian culture and influence in our own community. We were excited to partner with the Greater Haitian American Chamber of Commerce for this production and connect with Haitian-American artists, choreographers, and academics. Since Carmen is a tale of survival against all odds, we wanted to find a particularly tumultuous time in Haiti’s history to make things extra difficult for our heroine, and setting the work in the 1960s under the despotic rule of Francois Duvalier (aka Papa Doc) certainly raised the stakes. -

Brown Music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls Adapted from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum Berkeley, CA (June 5, 2013) – Berkeley Playhouse closes its fifth season with the Tony Award-winning musical THE WIZ. Kimberly Dooley (Lucky Duck, Seussical, The Musical, Once On This Island) directs and choreographs this soulful re-imagining of L. Frank Baum’s family classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, featuring a cast of 46. THE WIZ plays July 13 through August 25 (Press opening: July 13) at the Julia Morgan Theater in Berkeley. For tickets ($17-60) and more information, the public may visit berkeleyplayhouse.org or call 510-845-8542x351. In THE WIZ, Dorothy gets swept away by a tornado and ends up in the land of Oz. There, she learns that the only way she can get home again is to see the magical Wiz in the Emerald City. Along the way, she meets a Scarecrow made of garbage who wants a brain, a Tin Man who wants a heart, and a Lion who wants courage, and together they set off down the Yellow Brick Road to seek help from the all-powerful Wiz. This stage classic about the power of believing in yourself features such soul-stirring songs as “Home,” “The Feeling We Once Had,” “If You Believe,” “No Bad News,” and “Ease On Down the Road.” THE WIZ opened on Broadway in 1975 and closed in 1979, after four years and 1,672 performances. -

The Analysis of Writers' Stance
ISSN 1799-2591 Theory and Practice in Language Studies, Vol. 4, No. 5, pp. 965-972, May 2014 © 2014 ACADEMY PUBLISHER Manufactured in Finland. doi:10.4304/tpls.4.5.965-972 The Analysis of Writers’ Stance: A Comparison between Two Reviews on Desperate Housewives Xiufeng Tian Hebei Finance University, Baoding City, China Yueyuan Liang Guizhou University for Nationalities, Guizhou, China Abstract—In this essay, we are trying to detect writers’ stance in written discourse through analyzing two reviews on the same TV series: Desperate Housewives. Desperate Housewives is a fictive TV series produced by ABC Studios. It depicts the lives of four housewives and their families. Due to different contexts, each of the reviews selected to be analyzed represents different stance, with which we are going to compare through different writing topics and purposes, readership, writers’ attitudes and assessment from different angles. Index Terms—stance, Desperate Housewives, ideology, ideational meanings, interpersonal meanings I. INTRODUCTION Bloor and Bloor (2007) point out that all writers “take up some position in relation to the propositions they make” (p. 33). Those positions taken by writers can be defined as stance that is “a textual voice or community recognized personality which, following others” (Hyland, 2005, p. 176). This can be inferred that the stance writer takes in his/her text may have represented the views and attitudes of him/herself as an individual or those of a group. Usually the stance can be conscious or unconscious, explicit or hidden (Bloor & Bloor, 2007). In reviews, the writers’ positions could be supportive, disapproving or neutral. However, no matter what stance they choose to take, they must have directly or indirectly shown it through their language choices and objective focuses. -
