The long-time assistant spent 13 seasons on the RMU coaching staff before taking over the head coaching role, and Seasons Coaching: 22 served as the associate head coach from 2008-09 to 2015-16. The Colonials established school records in scoring defense, scoring COACHING HONORS margin (+12.4), field goal percentage defense, and NEC start (14-0), and achieved notable 2017 NEC Brenda Reilly Coach of the Year accomplishments such as first win over a BIG EAST school (W, 71-57 vs. Xavier) and the program's 2018 NEC Brenda Reilly Coach of the Year fifth straight and 13th total 20-win season. EXPERIENCE The Colonials lived up to preseason expectations in 2018-19, as the NEC preseason favorite went 2017-present Robert Morris Head Coach 22-11 overall and 16-2 in league play, winning the NEC regular-season and tournament titles. 2008-16 Robert Morris Associate Head Coach RMU advanced to play No. 5 Louisville in the NCAA Tournament First Round, the team’s fourth 2003-08 Robert Morris Assistant Coach consecutive postseason tournament appearance. The Colonials closed out their two-year stay 1998-03 Manhattan Assistant Coach at the North Athletic Complex with a 65-54 victory over in-state rival Saint Francis U in the NEC Championship Game, finishing with a 28-5 record at ‘The NAC’, a mark that included a perfect 22-0 mark against NEC opponents. NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS 2016-17 Most wins (22) for a RMU first-year coach Despite losing three important seniors, Coach B guided Robert Morris to a school-record 25 wins 2017-18 School record for victories (25) in a season in 2017-18, culminating in the program’s sixth NEC regular-season championship and second Postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) berth. While at Manhattan, Buscaglia focused mainly on recruiting and developing Conference Rookie of the Year 0 2 the perimeter players. The Jaguars, who are ranked No. 6 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll and are receiving votes in the USA TODAY Top 25 Coaches' Poll opened the season with wins at Northern Illinois (85-61) and Ball State (73-49) before suffering their only blemish, a 58-65 defeat at Notre Dame. In its first four conference contests, IUPUI owns an average margin of victory of 28.5 points per game.
Senior center Macee Williams is the Jaguars' most decorated player, with a pair of Horizon League Player of the Year and 2018 Horizon League Fresh- man of the Year awards in her trophy cabinet. She has shown no signs of slowing down in 2020-21, as she leads the team in points (17.9), rebounds (9.1), field goal percentage (.583), free throws made (27), and blocks (0.4). Fellow fourth-yearSydney Roule is also averaging double figures in points (11.3) and has shot an impressive 23-of-44 (.523) from three-point range, while redshirt junior guard Destiny Perkins paces IUPUI in assists (3.7) and steals (2.4).
The Jaguars own one of nation's top defenses, ranking third in three-point percentage defense (.195), 12th in scoring defense (52.3), 28th in scoring margin (+22.1), 33rd in rebounding margin (+10.1), and 56th in field goal percentage defense (.361). IUPUI also slots high nationally in field goal per- centage (.478, 26th), three-point field goal percentage (.380, 28th), assists (17.9, 28th), and three-point field goals (8.6, 38th), but has struggled in turnovers (18.4, 245th) and blocked shots (2.0, 260th).
New Year, New Colonials - RMU hasn't gotten off to the start it wanted in 2020-21, but maybe a change of the year will help reverse the tide. In the Colonials' previous five weekend series that opened a New Year, they have won nine of the 10 games with seven of those victories coming by double-digits. The only loss over this stretch came on Jan. 7, 2017 when RMU fell 56-49 at home to St. Francis Brooklyn.
Opening up the New Year on a high note has been a staple of Charlie Buscaglia's tenure with the Colonials. Since he joined the staff prior to the 2003-04 season, RMU is 13-4 (.765) in its January opener with nine of those triumphs coming on its home court. The Colonials are also 15-1 (.938) in conference lidlifters since 2004-05, a trend they hope to continue with the move from the Northeast Conference to the Horizon League.
Home Cookin' - 2020-21 has been an unconventional season thus far, including with home-road game splits. RMU has only played four games thus far and finally gets a home contest with this weekend's series against IUPUI, marking the first time as a varsity program that it had to wait until January to open the home slate.
In terms of amount of games, the Colonials' four-game season-opening road swing is their longest since the 2014-15 season when they played their first five contests away from Moon Township. RMU is 20-18 (.526) in home openers as a Division I program, and has won four of its last five by an average of 31.3 points.
The new UPMC Events Center helped the Colonials retain that homecourt advantage in 2019-20, as they went 12-3 (.800) in the venue's inaugural season - a mark that featured a 58-43 triumph over new Horizon League foe Youngstown State in the arena's debut.
The Veterans - Saturday's contest against IUPUI will likely mark a milestone for senior duo Nina Augustin and Honoka Ikematsu, as that game is projected to be the 100th in both of their careers. The pair are two of three Colonials likely to hit the century mark this season, with classmate Laura Carrasco (93 games) trailing both.
Both Augustin and Ikematsu have exemplified reliability over their careers, missing just two possible games each. Augustin played in all 33 games in both her freshman and sophomore seasons before missing a pair as a junior in 2019-20. Ikematsu sat out one game in both 2017-18 and 2018-19 before appearing in all 30 as a junior last season.
The Defense (Never) Rests - Robert Morris prides itself on its defense and 2019-20 was no different. The Colonials finished the season ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense (52.6), 10th in three-point field goal defense (.266), 11th in turnovers forced (21.17), 12th in field goal percentage defense (.346), 17th in turnover margin (+5.57), 20th in steals (10.7), 31st in scoring margin (+12.4), 76th in rebounds (39.70), and 79th in rebounding margin (+4.0). RMU's scoring defense, scoring margin, and field goal percentage defense are all school records.
The Colonials have ranked inside the top 25 of scoring defense in each of the last four sea- sons, placing 25th in 2016-17 (57.0), eighth in 2017-18 (54.1), and 12th in 2018-19 (55.3) before TALE OF THE TAPE achieving last season's sixth ranking (52.6). PLAYER On the Court, In the Classroom - Robert Morris' run of success extends beyond the Stat Number Rank basketball court, as it has been a regular fixture recently in the WBCA Academic Top 25 None Division I Honor Roll. The Colonials posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.767 in 2019-20, which was the third highest among Division I teams.
RMU is the only Division I school to be ranked inside the top four of the WBCA Academic Top 25 in four straight seasons, coming in at third in 2018-19 (3.713), fourth in 2017-18 (3.748), and second in 2016-17 (3.726). The Colonials also captured four consecutive NEC Team GPA Awards over that stretch.
30 Rock - Robert Morris established a single-season program record for 30-point victories in 2019-20, collecting seven in all. The Colonials defeated Bryant (69-39), Central Connecticut (86-56, 80-42), Pitt-Johnstown (63-30), Sacred Heart (73-43), Saint Francis U (62-29), and Wagner (77-35) by 30 or more points to set a new standard.
The previous record for 30-point wins was held by the 2006-07 side as they had five triumphs of that margin. RMU's 42-point rout of Wagner on Feb. 10, 2020 was the 13th largest margin of victory in program annals, and the third biggest road triumph.
New to RMU - RMU welcomes a three-player freshman class in 2020-21 made up of a Pittsburgh-area guards (Mackenzie Amalia), an Argentinian forward (Sol Castro), and a Spanish Center (Yasmine Sifaoui).
Amalia was a three-time PIAA All-State selection at Blackhawk High School, capping her varsity career with back-to-back First Team nods. She was named Player of the Year by the Beaver County Times as a senior, earned Top 20 designation in each of her four varsity seasons, and gained Top 5 honors from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Top 10 accolades from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The five-foot-five guard was a Student Ambas- sador and on Homecoming Court at Blackhawk, and was a member of the school's National Honor Society.
Castro is the program's first player from Argentina and has represented her country at the U18, U19, and Senior levels over her international career. She played against the United States and Brazil in the 2019 FIBA Women's Olympic Pre-Qualifying Americas Tournament, seeing a total of 16 minutes of action against the two teams. At the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup, the six-foot-one forward averaged 6.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 0.9 steals in 28.7 minutes per game, and she captured bronze at the 2018 FIBA U18 Americas Championships after providing 7.0 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 24.1 minutes per contest.
Sifaoui comes from an impressive family, as her uncle, Jeronimo Bucero, was key in Manhattan College's Round of 64 upset over fourth-seeded Okla- homa in the 1995 NCAA Tournament, and her aunt, Carlotta Castrejana, competed for Spain at four separate Summer Olympics in basketball and track & field. The six-foot-two center made five straight Madrid Final Fours and won five consecutive Spanish championships from 2015-19, and captured the rebounding crown at the 2016 Spanish Championships. She was also named the MVP of the Chus Mateo Tournament and netted the Award to the representation of Spanish basketball.
Welcome to Hoop Township - Robert Morris is in the midst of its most successful run, having compiled a 274-176 (.609) overall record and 186-67 (.735) conference mark since 2006-07. The Colonials have won six NEC Tournaments (2007, 2008, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019) and advanced to nine post- season tournaments (6 NCAA Tournaments, 2 Postseason WNITs, 1 Postseason WBI) over this stretch. RMU played in six NEC Championship Games from 2014-19 and advanced to the 2020 NEC Tournament semifinals before the COVID-19 virus outbreak prematurely ended the season.
The standard has been raised even higher since head coach Charlie Buscaglia took the reins prior to the 2016-17 campaign. In five seasons under Bus- caglia, the Colonials have posted a 92-41 (.692) overall record and 63-13 (.829) mark in league play, capturing four straight NEC regular-season titles and a pair of NEC Tournament crowns. RMU won a school-record 25 games in 2017-18 - the one season that didn't end with a league tournament title.
International Love - In what has become commonplace for the Robert Morris women's basketball program, this season's edition of the Colonials will feature a heavy international presence, with eight student-athletes representing seven different countries and Canadian provinces (Argentina, Finland, Japan, Ontario, Quebec, Spain).
International recruiting has become an emphasis of the program since the arrival of Charlie Buscaglia in 2003-04, with 35 players coming to Moon Township from outside of the United States. From those 35 student-athletes, a total of 17 different countries have been represented.
From Bobby Mo to Pro - RMU has had a consistent presence in the professional ranks overseas, with eight former Colonials playing across seven different countries in 2020-21. The latest alumna that signed a professional deal was Nneka Ezeigbo '20, who inked a contract in July with Unicaja Malaga of Spain's Liga Femenina 2.
Ashley Ravelli '16 and Artemis Spanou '14 joined new teams over the summer, as Ravelli signed with Use Scotti Rosa Empoli of Italy's Serie A1 and Spanou inked a deal with Arka Gdynia of Poland's Basket Liga Kobiet. Ezeigbo's inclusion means a total of five Colonials from the 2016-17 team have played professionally, putting herself alongside Rebeca Navarro '17, Megan Smith '18, Anna Niki Stamolamprou '17, and Lucia Striešová.
Insurmountable Lead - Robert Morris has never lost a game in which it has held the lead at the end of the second half. The Colonials were 23-0 in such situations last season. All-time, RMU is 643-0 when holding the lead at the final whistle.
