Leonard Hamilton's Emphasis On Academics Leads To FSU's impressive Graduate Rate By Curt Weiler Tallahassee Democrat December 12, 2018

In a world that concerns itself with the next level and advancing ahead with the opportunity to play professionally, academics can often be pushed to the side.

The addition of the one-and-done rule in 2005 -- which required all draft-eligible players to be 19 and one year removed from high school -- unintentionally furthered the notion among these players that school is secondary to basketball.

All of this makes the hit rate with which Florida State men's basketball coach Leonard Hamilton has seen his players graduate across his tenure in Tallahassee all the more impressive.

Since Hamilton took the FSU job ahead of the 2002-03 season, 61 of the 63 players (96.8 percent) that have enrolled and played for the Seminoles for at least four seasons left with their degrees.

The only two that didn't, former FSU players Al Thornton (2003-2007) and Solomon Alabi (2007-2010), have both reached out to FSU about finishing their degrees with online coursework as their playing careers wind down.

While this may seem impressive to many, Hamilton just views it as an expectation of someone in his position.

"It's part of our responsibility to take young men when they're teenagers and usher them into young adulthood," Hamilton told the Tallahassee Democrat.

"When you're a teenager, 17 or 18 years old, sometimes you're not in a position to make worldly decisions even though you might think that you are. I think that what we have always done is just set certain boundaries and certain expectations, try to hold everybody accountable to the things that we believe are important in the overall development of a young man, not as a basketball player but as an individual.

"What we've always tried to do is just treat everything like we would treat it if it was our own children. That's the way we look at it and so everything that we do totally in our program -- not only in academics but in everything that we do -- we try to treat it as such."

This is a belief that traces back to Hamilton's time as an assistant coach at Kentucky, where he won a national championship in 1978.

"That was part of my responsibility as a young assistant coach at the University of Kentucky for 12 years to make sure that I stay on top of the kids' academically," Hamilton said.

"I was at an institution that really placed a lot of emphasis on making sure that the kids not only played well, but they graduated."

With all the success the No. 10 Seminoles (8-1) have found early this season -- making the program's earliest appearance in the Top 10 since 1992 -- Hamilton sees the bigger picture when reflecting on his success at FSU.

"We truly believe that when you look around in my office and you see all those NCAA rings and watches and memorabilia, trophies, coach of the year awards, if that’s where you place all the emphasis -- the fact that we have won a certain number of basketball games -- then I think we’re very shallow in the big picture," Hamilton said.

"The most important thing we do is take young men and try to be a part during this period of life when you’re taking them from teenagers to young adults. That is by far the most important thing we do as coaches.

"Now, there’s no question that we need to win. That’s part of the process, that’s part of the job. But if we win and fail in the development of young people, in helping them grow in developing the tools that are going to give them a chance to be successful in life, we have failed."

A significant subset of this group of graduates are people who became the first in their direct family to attend or graduate from college.

Hamilton is quite aware of the fact that athletic scholarships could be the only means of some of his players earning college degrees and doesn't take that responsibility lightly.

"A lot of them will be the first people who have gone to college in their families. This is important because they many times change the whole culture of their family by them having academic success that compliments what most people want in athletic success," Hamilton said.

"Our rewards come five, six, seven, eight years after a kid has left us and what are they doing with their lives and their families and their careers. That’s when our great report comes in.

"I’m hoping that as a staff when we hang our whistles up and we look ourselves in the mirror, that we will be able to say that we have done everything possible to help the young people that have been a part of our journey to have a place in our society that’s meaningful and that they’re not only proud of the fact that they represented the school, Florida State, but that we had the kind of relationships that they feel helped them become who they are in the next part of their lives." Florida State's RaiQuan Gray Gaining Confidence As Game Slows Down By Wayne McGahee III Tallahassee Democrat Dec. 2, 2018

Redshirting is not a common occurrence in major college basketball.

No. 14 Florida State (6-1) had three players -- forwards RaiQuan Gray and Wyatt Wilkes and guard Anthony Polite - - take a redshirt last season knowing that they would struggle to break into the rotation.

Prior to forward Mfiondu Kabengele redshirting the 2016-17 season, FSU hadn't redshirted a player other than for injury in more than a decade.

Of the three players that redshirted in 2017-18, Gray had the longest way to go, but also the most to work with. In addition to making the jump from high school to college, Gray was also well over the weight he should be at to be able to play at the level FSU needs its players to when he arrived.

But his ability to play the game of basketball couldn't be denied.

"RaiQuan has never been lacking on talent," FSU associate head coach Stan Jones told the Tallahassee Democrat.

"His skill set is very diverse and unique with his ability to be a ball handler, a shot maker, a back to the basket guy, a facilitator. He's always had a unique offensive skill set that caught our eye early in the recruiting process."

He went to work immediately to change his body so he could showcase that talent.

He's dropped 40 pounds since he arrived on campus -- he's still listed at 6-foot-8, 260 pounds -- and is in the best shape of his playing career thanks to the work of strength and conditioning coach Mike Bradley and the rest of the FSU staff.

"I feel a lot better," Gray said.

"I feel like I can play longer, jump higher, move faster, guard everybody. That was the main thing really, just losing weight so that I can play defense. I knew on the offensive end that everything was going to take care of itself, but really, the main thing was defense.

"Coach Hamilton prides himself on defense so to be out there on the floor and stay out there longer, you’ve got to be able to defend."

Gray played his first college game in the Seminoles' season opener against Florida Nov. 6.

It didn't go particularly well for him.

He made one of his three shot attempts with two rebounds and four fouls in 13 minutes.

He didn't get much of an opportunity to play in FSU's second game against Tulane with just six minutes and two points.

But then things started to click for him.

He had four points against Canisius and six points against UAB with three rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

"I think what you’ve seen the most from him since the season’s started is that his confidence is growing, and the game is slowing down for him," Jones said.

"Just by getting game experience. Everyone thinks this is a game where you can just walk on the court and have success. It’s a lot of different variables from being a high school player to being a red shirt to being a significant contributor. I think as you see game to game, you see him be less passive and more aggressive as his role’s expanded."

FSU has played three straight teams that have been ranked when FSU played them or ranked after and come away with two victories.

Gray played a big role in all three games.

He had eight points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal in 16 minutes in the Seminoles' 79-76 overtime win over then No. 21 LSU.

Two days later, Gray put up seven points and two assists in 14 minutes during FSU's 66-60 loss to No. 23 Villanova in the AdvoCare Invitational championship game.

Wednesday, Gray had seven points and two rebounds in 14 minutes during FSU's comeback 73-72 victory over No. 18 Purdue.

Those numbers may not look all that special, but for a player that is still adjusting to his new body type and the speed of the college game, they're a start.

"This is a game that you can’t gain confidence without experience," Jones said.

"Actually getting into the game and seeing yourself on tape and talking to your teammates and reviewing your film after the game. (Gray) is an instinctive basketball player. You can see from game to game that the light’s getting brighter for him and his confidence is growing exponentially every game."

Gray isn't happy with making a small impact this season.

He wants to be a major contributor as the Seminoles' look to make another deep run in the NCAA tournament after making it to the Elite Eight last season.

"I really have high expectations for myself," Gray said.

"As the year goes on I just want to gain more confidence and be able to be out there in the big games where it matters the most. So I just see myself getting better as the season goes on. More rebounds, more assists, more points. I feel like as long as we keep winning everything will take care of itself. I want to make the ACC All-Freshman team."

There's no denying that Gray has the talent to do that this season as long as he continues to develop.

He moves very well for a player his size and can play inside or outside on the offensive end comfortably.

It's going to come down to his ability to play deeper into games and develop defensively to become the player the coaches believe he can be.

"I’ve always compared him to a poor man’s Mark Aguirre or Clarence Weatherspoon," Jones said.

"He’s not as explosive as Charles Barkley, but a guy that can be so versatile offensively with a unique body type that makes him very hard to guard. He can run and jump, but he also has a low center of gravity. He has a wide hip and shoulder base, which allows him to create space on pivots and post ups and rebound opportunities.

"I don’t see why he can’t develop into a player that’s going to contribute here significantly throughout his whole career."

Anthony Polite Takes Different Path To Same Destination As His Father By Curt Weiler Tallahassee Democrat December 7, 2018

Despite the garnet and gold in his gene pool, Anthony Polite didn't grow up around Florida State.

In fact, the Florida State legacy spent the first 15 years of his life on a different continent.

Polite was born in Lugano, Switzerland while his father Michael was playing basketball abroad.

That didn't stop him from following in his father's footsteps and ending up at FSU as well.

"It has been a part of his life from when he was a very small kid," Michael Polite told the Tallahassee Democrat.

"I'd bring my bag home with the ball in there. Him, as a child, rolling it around the house, his mom allowing him to play with the ball and him becoming familiar with that round ball and having a love for it kind of snowballs."

Michael played at FSU from 1987 through 1991. He finished his career with 1,066 points and was on teams that made the NCAA Tournament in three of his four seasons with the Seminoles.

"He has the benefit of a father who really knew something about basketball. That speaks for itself," FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton said.

After his time in Tallahassee, he went onto have a 10-year career in Europe. It was during this time that Michael's wife Maddalena gave birth to Anthony.

Even after Michael's time as a professional player ended, the Polites stayed in Switzerland.

Polite bounced back and forth between basketball and soccer before locking in on wanting to seriously play basketball when he was 12.

"He's been a student of the game," Michael said.

"He knows the history of where I started, from my high school and then obviously playing college ball and then seeing me play professionally, wanting to follow in his dad's footsteps."

A few years and a move to a different area in Switzerland later, Anthony decided he wanted to play high school basketball in the United States.

He moved to Boca Raton and enrolled at St. Andrew's School as a freshman at 15 while his mother stayed back in Switzerland, where she remains to this day.

"His mom has really been supportive of him liking the game and him actually wanting to follow in his dad's footsteps," Michael said.

Added Anthony, "I always looked up to my dad and my mom. They always wanted the best for me. My dream was always to come play college basketball.

"Once I came over here and I moved to the states, (FSU) was definitely one of my top choices."

After a prolific playing career which saw him named the 2017 Palm Beach Player of the Year as a senior, Polite chose FSU over Miami and Memphis, among others.

While his connection to FSU seemed clear on paper, Michael is adamant that his career had little impact on his son's decision to pursue basketball and to do so at FSU.

"I never really pushed him in the direction that he has to do what his dad did. He just had a love for the game and was a student of the game," Michael said.

"Growing up in Switzerland, his mom being supportive of him being a basketball player, he just followed some of the better players, better leagues and the competition in terms of college basketball as well. He decided to come here and play college basketball here and he learned the game from this perspective being here in the U.S. and just studied the collegiate game as well.

"He took a visit to Florida State and fell in love with the program in terms of how coach Hamilton runs his program, the guys showing a lot of love towards him as a player and he made his decision. It was nothing that I forced on him. It was something that he studied and decided to come play for Florida State."

While Anthony played his entire high school career in the U.S., Hamilton sees aspects of his game that developed from his time playing abroad.

"He brings that European system where I think they spend a lot of time with youngsters earlier in life fundamentally. He seems to be pretty sound when he dribbles left, dribbles right, he has good shooting form," Hamilton said.

Michael added, "Growing up in Europe, he has that European style, he has that style of play. Then, obviously, coming over to the U.S., playing high school ball, playing on the AAU circuit, he's done a tremendous job of transitioning his game from learning how to play the game and the fundamentals over in Europe and then picking up the style of play here."

After battling tendinitis in both of his knees last year while redshirting, Polite has earned his first significant playing time this season.

Averaging 14.3 minutes, Polite is seeing the most playing time out of the Seminoles' four true or redshirt freshmen. "I'm not surprised. I've seen Anthony put in a lot of work in his first two years," FSU point guard Trent Forrest said. "I knew he was going to be a pretty good player defensively and he was always able to shoot the ball. I feel like he's just gaining his confidence."

His intensity and ability to operate the Junkyard Dog defense Hamilton wants to see is one of the main things to which this can be attributed.

"I like him being in a stance, I like the pressure he's putting on the ball," Hamilton said.

"I envision him as some point being a good defender, a guy who can pick up the point guard for us and a guy also who can knock down jump shots."

Added Anthony, "I know I'm a good defender so that's what I do. If my shot's not falling, I have to find something else that I can produce in and that's defense, steals, rebounds, finding someone else."

All of this has Hamilton excited about the legacy Anthony may leave behind in his own right at FSU.

"The fact that he has the potential he's developed, he has the energy and the quickness and speed and the strength to defend. I think he's obviously a pretty good shooter, pretty good dribbler," Hamilton said.

"I do think that you can see the future is very bright for him and for us."
