News Gothic is similar in proportion and structure to Franklin Gothic also designed by Benton. News Gothic, like other Benton sans serif typefaces, follows the grotesque model. Shapes which distinguish it from the neo-grotesque are the two-story lowercase a and the two-story lowercase g. Also distinctive are the blunt terminus at the apex of the lowercase t, and the location of the tail of the uppercase Q completely outside the bowl. News Gothic BT The letter forms are compact, and descenders are shallow. The typeface differs from other realist sans-serifs in its organic shapes and subtle transitions of stroke width, all contributing to a less severe, humanist tone of voice. For 123 123 much of the twentieth century News Gothic was used in Abcdefghijklmn newspaper and magazine publishing. 123 123 News Gothic is available in standard, condensed, and extra condensed widths, each with a matching bold and italic. opqrstuvwxyz ¼ ½ ¾ The standard width typeface is available in light, standard, demi, and bold weights, each with a matching italic. The condensed and extra condensed widths are ideal for use in tables and parts lists. ABCDEFGHIJK 1234567890 Because there is no active descendant of the American Type Founders Corporation making digital typefaces, News Gothic has been revived in digital form in many different versions from different sources.

Doctoral Thesis Typography in Advertising Typografie v reklamě Author: Aleksandar Donev, MSc Degree programme: Visual Arts (P8206) Degree course: Multimedia and Design (8206V102) Supervisor: Doc. PhDr. Zdeno Kolesár, Ph.D. Zlín, December 2015 © Aleksandar Donev Published by Tomas Bata University in Zlín in the Edition Doctoral Thesis. The publication was issued in the year 2015 Key words in English: Typography, Advertising, Visual Communication, Design, Typefaces, Fonts Key words in Czech: Typografie, Reklama, Vizuální Komunikace, Design, Písma, Fonty Full text of the Doctoral Thesis is available in the Library of TBU in Zlín ISBN 978-80-……… ABSTRACT This thesis is set to investigate the use of type and typography in advertising, the role of typography in rendering the advertising message and the effects it has on the same. Typography and advertising both have been researched significantly all over the world but mainly as a two separate disciplines without showing the importance of their connection. The aim of my thesis is to fill that gap and show the significance of typography in advertising and their relationship in the communication process. The approach undertaken in this thesis is mainly theoretical, including statistics, a survey, a case study and an analysis of literature from various sources in the field of the research. I have analysed the factors that make typography suitable and effective for advertising purposes. With this research I am able to confirm that the use of typography and type for advertising purposes is slightly different than its use for other purposes. I am hoping that my work will make designers and advertisers more aware of the importance of typography in the creation of advertisements and that they will make better use of it.

Why would anyone bother using more than one typeface? 6 Designers can, and often do, use a single variation of one typeface (for example, Proxima Nova Regular) for entire projects. This is a common exercise in Typography 101 classes because it helps students understand typesetting options and limitations, and it’s a popular aesthetic among professionals who are in a hurry, trying to be plain, or trying to be careful. Even sticking with a single typeface (for example, the complete Proxima Nova family) provides a multitude of possibilities, particularly if that face offers many weights, widths and styles. The act of bringing different typefaces together to convey a message is challenging, inspiring and fun.

Typography is a process, a refined craft making language visible. Designers shape language with type and give words life and power to speak text fluently. Letterforms and their supporting characters are simple shapes that do so much. With distinct voices and personalities, type whispers delicately and shouts loudly. INTRODUCTION Communication lies at its core. Type is commanding and beautiful one moment, analytic and instructive the next. It is dramatic, whimsical, modest, and extravagant. Typographic practice (and those dedicated to it) gives spoken and written language vitality across time, generations, and cultures. Rooted in everyday experience, type is ever-present. It often goes unnoticed. Other times, it radiates. A central goal of designers is marrying content and form. Function balances with aesthetics. Boundless methods exist to visu- alize text with type. Heightened attention and thoughtful articulation are essential. Discipline fosters skill and knowl- edge. Designing with type for communication challenges and fulfills and continually offers new things to explore.
