PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE 04/2010 to present AG Group ‐ Amazonastur ‐ Project for the sustainability of Amazon Crafts Designer in product development , for workshops in pottery, basketry, fiber, sculpture, painting, accessories in seeds, and silver. This consultancy involved working with craftsmen and women in urban, indigenous and riverside communities in seven cities in the Amazon region to develop both products and market access as well as project monitoring, raising visibility and sales of regional crafts and support to traditional skills. To make this project possible was necessary to dialogue with various Indigenous organizations, government and other local ngo’s. I was responsible to support this process and to promote a dialogue between the organizations and other groups who became interested in our program. 01/2010 to present Aga Khan Foundation (Mozambique) ‐ www.akdn.org Consultant on crafts sector for Kellogg foundation and EC funded project to develop the craft sector in Cabo Delgado. Involving the planning of activities, group mobilization, product development and strategy in eight districts of Cabo Delgado and southern Tanzania as well as support to the development of UACAD ‐ the Artisans Union of Cabo Delgado. Also to engage Provincial government and National agencies in the support of the program, getting across a message of long term support to the Province and the commitment to actively engage in the development of policies for the sector. Represented the Aga Khan Foundation in the VII CPLP Foundations meeting in São Paulo to discuss the role of NGO’s in the African countries and the collaborations possible. 07/2010 to 10/2010 Mazal Institute ‐ www.institutomazal.org SEBRAE Tocantins ‐ Project Work, Handicrafts, Tourism and of Women Empowerment Commissioned by SEBRAE Tocantins to work with the Mazal Institute to execute an extensive program to upgrade the quality and visibility of crafts and artisans culture in the region including product development workshops and monitoring of the production of products using the technique of sewing with golden grass and Buriti fiber in six municipalities of Tocantins State. Represented the Mazal Institute in the VII CPLP Foundations meeting in São Paulo to discuss the role of NGO’s in the African countries and the collaborations possible. 02/2010 to 04/2010 SEBRAE ‐ Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service Consultancy in AlgoD + Project in Mato Grosso State to develop products using cotton fiber in the techniques of manual spinning and weaving. This is a Fair Trade Project, using funds from SEBRAE MT and in partnership with the Association of Cotton Producers of Mato Grosso. The project aims to contribute to improving the competitiveness and sustainability of groups of micro and small enterprises in the cotton region of Mato Grosso. 06/2007 to 10/2009 Aga Khan Foundation (Mozambique) www.akdn.org Acting Director for the Entrepreneur Development Initiative, responsible for implementing the new EDI Program ‐ Entrepreneur Development Initiative, in the Province of Cabo Delgado. The EDI is a program that promotes the entrepreneurial skills of people in Cabo Delgado Province; one of the poorest Province’s in Mozambique. Major responsibilities included: • Design and oversight of the development and implementation of the EDI program in four sectors: crafts, seaweed, horticulture and sesame • Mobilization of community leaders • Community consultations to survey the productive opportunities and expertise available; • Diagnosis and analysis of the value chain of the productive sectors prioritized (crafts, horticulture, seaweed, and sesame) variants considering political, economic and cultural rights; • Dialogue with Provincial Government, Central Government and Private Sector in the discussion of public policies and government programs (the Green Revolution: the State Decentralization Program: Exports Program) • Development of MOU's (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Provincial Government, Private Sector and supported groups; • Training of local leaders and government technicians to support work with communities and strengthening of the CDA's; • Coordination of activities for the integration of various groups of farmers and artisans of the region (three different ethnicities: Makonde, Makua and KiMwani) through workshops at District and Provincial levels; • Continuous monitoring of group’s activities in the villages and workshops on farming techniques to farmers and product development and design to artisans; • Mediation of conflicts between groups and communities; • Development and coordination of strategy for environmental management and sustainability of resources used (use of agricultural inputs and raw materials); • Monitoring of groups in villages in the improvement of working conditions and other demands such as internal management, environmental impact and functional literacy; • Resource mobilization; • Coordination with private sector, nongovernmental institutions and government departments (education, culture, industry and commerce, agriculture and tourism) in the discussion of public policies, development strategies and allocation of space and resources for the sector; • Engage the cultural class to support and participate in the program. In Mozambique we engaged influential people such as Mia Couto, Manoela Soeiro and Julio Carrilho. The engagement of the artistical class gave extra credibility to the activities we have supported; • Organization of fairs and exhibitions to support domestic and international visibility of cultural sector; • Coordination of activities between the Education Program and crafts to develop educational objects and activities; • Support for other programmatic activities of the Aga Khan Foundation such as HABITAT project (Construction of improved physical spaces using local materials) and SSDP ‐ Strategic Spatial Development Planning (Dobbin International) • Coordinated and consolidated the international cooperation agreement in the areas of craft and horticulture between SEBRAE and the Aga Khan Foundation (Mozambique). • UACAD – Conceptualization with the various artisans group in the creation of an artisans body to support the development of craft the sector in the Province including policy dialogue, market support and dialogue with the various groups and its demands in the districts. UACAD aim is to build knowledge and experience among artisans to realize the sector potential. Since its creation UACAD has opened the UJAMAA shop at Pemba airport and has supported the organization of business demands and workshops for it’s members. 10/2006 to 05/2007 Aga Khan Foundation – Mozambique Coordinator, Market Development Unit Supported the design of the EDI Concept Note. Responsible for the diagnostic, design and implementation of activities with small rural entrepreneurs and artisans and the recruitment of local staff and international trainees. Carried on team training and coordinated activities with donors, government and private sector. 08/2005 to 07/2006 Ministry of Agrarian Development – Talents of Brazil Program Design and Management Consultiant on various craft projects in partnership with SEBRAE in the states of Minas Gerais , Bahia, Maranhão and Rio Grande do Sul. 05/2004 to 09/2005 SEBRAE DF‐ Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service in the Federal District Analyst at the Local Development Program Unit involving: • Diagnosis and planning activities to support craft production groups in the Administrative Regions of the Federal District; • Mobilization of artisanal production groups in low‐income regions; • Monitoring of production activities in the different groups and geographical areas; • Mediation of conflicts in the groups and internal management training; • Developing and managing budgets, monitoring the partnerships with government and private sector (Ministry of Science and Technology and the Federal District Government); • Hiring designers and other professionals for the technical support to the groups; • Organization of workshops on design and management and trade fairs ; • Conceptualization and monitoring the development of brochures and promotional materials.
