ABSTRACT The thesis examines how images of 'femininity' and the construction of gender-appropriate behaviour are reinforced and potentially challenged by the structure, content and teachin g cif girls' physical education in secondary schooling. The research involves both historical and contemporary investigation.. The qualitative methodology used for the contemporary research fcucuses cm an in-depth case study cf an inner city local education authority. Open-ended interviews were conducted with advisory staff, teachin g staff and edLication committee members involved in secondary school reorganization. This was followed by close observation in four selected case study schools. The research techniques were grounded in a feminist methcmdolc'y The historical analysis identifies gender ideologies relating to physical ability/capacity, motherhood! domesticity and sexuality which underpinned the develc.pment of girls' physical educatic'n. The contemporary research concludes that images of femininity continue to find expression in the assumptions of women physical education staff although they are specific to their particular historical location in the 1980s. The case study observations provide evidence cu f the institLlticunalization of gender ideologies in the policies, priorities and practices of girls' physical education. Three central issues emerge from the research: the significance of idec'lcug ies of the physical and the politics of sexuality; the relationship between young women's subcultures, leisure and physical education; the debates surrounding mixed versus single-sex or ganization. These issues are critically analysed in relation to relevant literature, evidence from the research material and current feminist theoretical debates. The thesis

    IJCJ&SD 9(4) 2020 ISSN 2202-8005 Fractured Lives, Dissenting Voices, Recovering ‘Truth’: Frontiers of Research and Resistance Phil Scraton1 Queen’s University Belfast, United Kingdom Abstract Emerging from critical conferences in the early 1970s involving academic researchers, community-based workers and activists, critical social research challenged the role and legitimacy of mainstream social sciences in their support of social orders fractured by class, ‘race’, sectarianism, gender, sexuality and age. This article opens with a brief reflection on the emergence and consolidation of critical social theory as the foundation and context for research that challenges state-institutionalised power and authority. It draws on long-term, in-depth primary research into the operational policies and practices of policing and incarceration, exploring the profound challenges involved in bearing witness to the ‘pain of others’. Recounting personal testimonies ‘from below’, revealing institutionalised deceit and pursuing ‘truth recovery’, it argues that dissenting voices are the foundation of hope, resistance and transformation. Sondaal B.A., International Affairs, Xavier University M.A., Political Science, University of Cincinnati October 2011 Committee Chair: Richard J. Harknett, Ph.D ABSTRACT This dissertation contributes to the growing literature about globalization’s impact on local institutions with a focus on the interaction between global and local forces. Specifically, the dissertation examines the two theories of glocalization and grobalization that offer contrasting explanations about the impact of globalization on local institutions. While the theory of glocalization stresses the interpenetration of the global and the local resulting in increasing hybridization, grobalization predicts that globalization overwhelms local institutions resulting in increasing homogeneity. The research reveals that while both theories tested capture to some degree institutional dynamics, they ultimately overlook the enduring power of the local. Put differently, the study finds that globalization’s effects are not pre-determined and impact local institutions differently based on the local-societal setting and the local institutional capacity to withstand unifying pressures. As a corrective, my study introduces a third conceptual frame for understanding the global-local relationship that I term ‘localism anew’, which holds that local entities can be the driving force in transforming globalization by leveraging the local in order to succeed globally – something which grobalization cannot conceive and which glocalization overlooks.

This article draws upon the cultural trauma theory developed by Piotr Sztompka to provide a sociological understanding of the localized experience of public grief that has followed the tragic occurrence. The authors analyze the different stages of cultural traumatization with a particular focus on the conflicting emic and etic representations of the Hillsborough tragedy with regard to opposite constructions of ‘truth’ and the attribution of blame. Hundreds were injured and thousands traumatised. Within hours, the causes and circumstances of the disaster were contested. While a judicial inquiry found serious institutional failures in the policing and management of the capacity crowd, no criminal prosecutions resulted, and the inquests returned ‘accidental death’ verdicts. Immediately, the authorities claimed that drunken, violent fans had caused the fatal crush. Denied legitimacy, survivors’ accounts revealed a different story criticising the parlous state of the stadium, inadequate stewarding, negligent policing, failures in the emergency response and flawed processes of inquiry and investigation. Reflecting on two decades of research and contemporaneous interviews with bereaved families and survivors, this article contrasts the official discourse with those alternative accounts – the ‘view from below’. It demonstrates the influence of powerful institutional interests on the inquiries and investigations. It maps the breakthrough to full documentary disclosure following the appointment of the Hillsborough Independent Panel, its research and key findings published in September 2012. Michelle Donelan MP Minister of State for Universities; Universities UK; funders of higher education institutions; learned societies & higher education membership bodies CC.: AdvanceHE, Office for Students We are a group of Black, Asian and minority ethnic academics, students, professional support staff who work or have recently worked in UK higher education. The group includes highly respected and well-known scholars of science, law, politics, business and social justice. We note that a number of UK higher education institutions have used the occasion of the brutal murder of George Floyd to publish statements indicating their commitment to the Black Lives Matter movement. We are aware of and welcome efforts by the sector to address racial harassment and narrow the gap in degree outcomes between white students and those from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds. However, while these and other racial inequalities remain, statements that Black lives matter can at best be regarded as tokenistic and superficial. The sector has, to date, been overly optimistic in its assessment of the extent of the problem, it has been slow to act and, where action has been taken, it has failed to seriously engage with the systemic and structural nature of racism. We believe the groundswell of protests in the US and the UK represent a crucial moment for us - as people directly affected by these issues - to call on the sector for help in eliminating racism. Specifically, we request that: Culture & understanding 1. Committees, boards or advisory groups set up, whether locally or at a national level, to address racism and racial harassment must be led by and made up of those with first-hand experience of these issues or expertise in the area .

' -Gustave Le Bon, 1895 Crowd-relatedinjuries and deaths are startlingly common both in the United States and worldwide. They occur in a wide range of situations and at a vast array of venues: at music concerts, sporting events, retail holiday sales, in and aroundairports, subway plaorms, and parking lots, among other locations. These "crowd crush" incidents, however, are extremely underreportedand rarely litigated, masking the seriousness of this issue and making it difficultfor the few victims who pursue legal recourse to recover damages. Given that there is virtually no statutory law in the United States pertainingto crowd management and control, crowd crush cases are based entirely in common law, most often in the law of negligence.
