    10TH DECEMBER 2019 The Man Who Invented Christmas Film Adaptations of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol Dr Christine Corton A Christmas Carol is now over 175 years old. Written in 1843, it is certainly the most televised of Dickens’s works and equals if not beats, its closest rival, Oliver Twist (1837-39) for cinema releases. It’s had a huge influence on the way we understand the Christmas festival. It was written at a time when the festival was being revived after centuries of neglect. And its impact was almost immediate. A Christmas Carol quickly achieved iconic status, far more so than any of Dickens’s other Christmas stories. You have to have been living on some far-off planet not to have heard of the story – the word ‘Scrooge’ has come to represent miserliness and ‘Bah, Humbug’ is a phrase often resorted to when indicating someone is a curmudgeon. Even, Field Marshall Montgomery concluded his Christmas Eve message to the Eighth Army on the battlefield with Tiny Tim’s blessing. In 1836 Dickens described Christmas at Dingley Dell in The Pickwick Papers in which of course one of the most famous of the interpolated tales appears, The Story of the Goblins who Stole a Sexton and for those who know the tale, the miserable and mean Gabriel Grub is not a million miles away from Scrooge. Both Mr Pickwick’s Christmas at Wardle’s (1901) and Gabriel Grub: The Surly Sexton (1904) were used as the basis for silent films at around the same time as the first silent version of the 11 minute long: Scrooge: Or Marley’s Ghost which was released in 1901.

    CALENDAR LISTINGS Houston Grand Opera Presents World Premiere of It’s a Wonderful Life Catch a new take on the ultimate holiday classic, December 2–17 Updated November 9, 2016 WHAT: Houston Grand Opera (HGO) continues its cycle of holiday operas with the world premiere presentation of It’s a Wonderful Life by composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer, from December 2–17.This timeless tale follows a troubled banker whose guardian angel shows him the lasting impact our lives can have on those around us. The 1946 Frank Capra film It’s a Wonderful Life has become synonymous with the American holiday spirit. The opera takes its story from the film—an angel is assigned to help a human being, George Bailey, who is so despondent that he plans to take his own life on Christmas Eve. But in a departure from the film, the action in the opera takes place from the perspective of the angel, named Clara, who will finally earn her wings if she helps George. Complete with a quartet of flying angels who assist Clara, four big dance numbers, a feathered turbo booster hat that stops time, and a sing-along at the end of the opera, It’s a Wonderful Life is perfect for children and families. It’s a Wonderful Life will be the Heggie/Scheer team’s third commission from HGO and Heggie’s sixth world premiere conducted by HGO Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers.     Christmas Edition 2017 We are approaching what is called, in the Christian calendar, the Advent season. Advent is celebrated during the four Sundays immediately preceding Christmas and is intended to commemorate the birth, the coming, or the arrival of Jesus. Originally, it was not intended to be the secular celebration that we have made it to become. It was a sacred occasion intended to celebrate a deeply religious event. I have prepared four sermons to be preached in the month of December to emphasize the Advent theme specifically. I hope you will be present to witness these worship services and to hear these sermons. I hope this, not just because I am the one who will be preaching these sermons, but also because I honestly hope, believe, and pray that the sermons themselves will bring Jesus nearer to you and make Christmas more meaningful in your life. After all, Je- sus paid a tremendous price to make it all possible, and the culmination of it all began with His birth. The sermons that I shall preach will include the historical events, the contemporary circum- stances, and the divine and human conditions which necessitate, precipitate, and surround our Savior's birth. However, while the history, the geography, and the divine orchestration of the season itself and all of the events attached to it are important to understanding Christ- mas correctly and appreciating Christmas properly, the most important fact about the entire situation and season is that when the fullness of time had come, God sent His Son into the world. All attempts by other means to reconcile man and God had come short of their pur- pose, and now God was making a final, personal, and sacrificial effort to make it happen.

    It’s a Wonderful Life! New Brunswick Rutgers alumnus, Philip Van Doren Stern, Class of 1924, was shaving one morning in the winter of 1938 and had an idea for a story. The author and publishing executive had fully formed a story in his mind about a despondent man who rejects suicide and embraces life after a mysterious stranger allows him to see how the world would be had he never been born. It took Stern five years to develop a draft he felt comfortable sharing with his agent. After unsuccessfully shopping it around to magazines, he decided to self-publish the story, called The Greatest Gift, and send it to 200 people as a 1943 Christmas card. A few months later, Stern received a telegram from Hollywood, announcing that his story had been sold for $10,000. Movie director Frank Capra’s Liberty Films acquired the rights in 1945 and things really took off. Capra wrote, “It was the story I had been looking for all my life! Small town. A man, a good man, ambitious. But so busy helping others, life seems to pass him by … Through the eyes of a guardian angel he sees the world as it would have been had he never been born.” Capra approached Jimmy Stewart, who immediately signed on to play the lead, George Bailey, in what was now called It’s a Wonderful Life. The movie, which opened in December 1946 acknowledged Stern in the opening credits with the words: “Based on a story by Philip Van Doren Stern.” The film went on to be nominated for five Academy Awards.

    Summary: “Looking Back,” the first in a three-part series titled, “It’s a Wonder-full Life,” by Rev. Jay Anderson at Church of the Master United Methodist, Westerville, OH, Sunday, November 10, 2019. Detail: It’s a Wonderful Life, originally made for Liberty Films, is one of the most popular and heartwarming films ever made by director Frank Capra. Capra regarded this film as his personal favorite - it was also James Stewart's favorite of all his feature films. The film's screenplay was based on "The Greatest Gift," an original short story first written on a Christmas card by Philip Van Doren Stern. The film was actually a box-office flop at the time of its release, and only became the Christmas movie classic in the 1970s due to repeated television showings at Christmas-time when its copyright protection slipped and it fell into the public domain in 1974, allowing TV stations to air it for free. Republic Pictures later restored its copyright claim to the film in 1993, so currently, it can be shown only on the NBC-TV network. It’s actually a dark, bittersweet post-war tale of a savings-and-loan manager who struggles against a greedy banker and his own self- doubting nature in a small town named Bedford Falls. Earnest do-gooder George Bailey, played by James Stewart, recognizes his life as wonderful and truly rich only after suffering many hardships, mishaps and fateful trials. He is given encouragement by a whimsical, endearing, trainee-angel named Clarence, who is sent from above to help the discouraged George Bailey.

To facilitate this transition, we are moving the Computer Lab down to the Lower Level Makerspace. We appreciate your patience as we strive to make the Library more accommodating and efficient.
