Warren County bald eagle released The Wildlife Center of Virginia, the nation’s leading teaching and research hospital for native wildlife, released a Bald Eagle on Friday, Sept. 18 at Westover Plantation, on the James River in Charles City County. Participating in the release were Ed Clark, President and Co-Founder of the Wildlife Center and Madis Leivits, a veterinary student from Estonia who has just started a one-year internship at the Center. The center’s Randy Huwa reports, “The release itself went off without a hitch. This was a juvenile Bald Eagle … flying in the wild for the first time ever. On its first flight, he went about 100 yards, relatively low to the ground [and in our flight pen, the bird can fly only about 12 feet off of the ground]. But he’ll figure ALL of that out …” More information is available at [email protected] or by reading the late Sept issue of Warren County Report, available free at warrencountyreport.com Photos courtesy Lee Skluzak. In the spring of 2009, Mrs. Maria Wakefield put together the first chapter of the WCMS National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). Eighteen 7th graders and seven 6th graders were inducted in April 2009. Now that the 7th graders have gone on to the high school, there are only seven members until the next induction ceremony in April 2010. Even though there are only seven members, they have been work- ing very hard. They have already started one fundraiser throughout the school by selling fruit snacks. They plan on helping with the children’s games at the Festival of Leaves on October 10th, conducting an ‘At the bridge’ • 533 E. According to Virginia State Police, the driver southbound on Route 340 was found to be at fault in the two-car accident at the Mount Vista Drive entrance to Skyline High School in the late afternoon hours of Sept. 17. Lelia Mauck was that southbound driver of a 2000 Dodge Neon, ac- cording to Trooper Glovier. Mauck’s vehicle struck a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Belinda Priest. Priest was traveling northbound on Route 340 with her 15-year-old juvenile son. She was attempting to turn left into the high school property when her vehicle was struck. The accident was reported at 5:28 p.m. Trooper Glovier said Priest had the light for her left turn across the di- vided highway median when her vehicle was struck. Mauck was charged with failing to heed a traffic signal. All three people involved in the accident were transported to War- ren Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both vehicles were determined to be total losses, Glovier said.
