  • A Long, Strange Trip to Cubs World Series
A long, strange trip to Cubs World Series By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Friday, October 28, 2016 The Cubs appear a thoroughly dominant team with no holes, and certainly no “Cubbie Occurrences,” in playing the Cleveland Indi- ans in the generations-delayed World Series. But, to steal the millionth time from a song- writer, what a long, strange trip is has been. Truth is stranger than fiction in the Cubs Universe. On my own 45-year path of watch- ing games and talking to the newsmakers at Wrigley Field, I have been a witness to: Burt Hooton slugged a grand-slam homer off Tom “Terrific” Seaver in an 18- 5 pounding of the New York Mets in 1972. Hillary Clinton throws out first ball at Wrigley Field in 1994. On my 19th birthday, May 27, 1974, lefty Ken “Failing” Frailing pitched a complete-game 15-hitter in a 12-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants. A few weeks later, Rich Reuschel tossed a 12-hit shutout against the Lumber Com- pany Pittsburgh Pirates. In mid-Aug. 1974, the Dodgers had 24 hits by the sixth inning in an 18-8 victory over the Cubs. Apparently peeved, the Pirates in late 1975 racked up the most lopsided shutout in history, 22-0 over the Cubs. Reuschel started and gave up eight runs in the first. Brother Paul Reuschel mopped up in the ninth. Rennie Stennett went 7-for-7. Amazingly, less than a month previously, the Reuschels teamed for the only all- brother shutout in history in a 7-0 victory over the Dodgers (also witnessed here).

  • Making Predictions As Hazardous As a Hanging Curve with Game on the Line
Making predictions as hazardous as a hanging curve with game on the line By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Tuesday, March 19, 2013 The best advice came from a stout, cigar- chomping Runyonesque character who’d pull out a wad of $1,000 in cash in Wrigley Field’s right field bleachers in 1979. A real character who used four different names, I’m sure he was a low-level bookie- type. After watching batting practice, about a half hour before first pitch, this bloke would go downstairs to relay something over the pay phone to an information- hungry recipient. But the man of many ID’s was the wisest of us all. “Never bet on baseball,” he said. “It’s too unpredictable.” From then on, I never put money down on the grand ol’ game unless it was a “sucker bet.” Yeah, easy money from some over- confident, uninformed fool who did not have the facts you had committed to mem- ory, and thus you beat an easy mark. Even with the unpredictability quotient, trying to forecast the game’s strange Few could have predicted a Sox World Series title in 2005. But when it was within sight, Paul rhythms is too appealing. Everyone believes Konerko and a stingy starting staff helped nail they can get a bead on a baseball team’s for- it down. Photo credit Keith Allison. tunes this time of the year. www.ChicagoBaseballMuseum.org [email protected] Quick example was the 2011 White Sox. Following a 2010 season in which the South Siders contended into September, GM Kenny Williams decided to up the ante.

  • The Cubs Faithful Hope They Do Not Catch the Injury Bug for the Second Straight Year and They Have a Red Sox Type Happy Ending to the 2005 Season
The Cubs faithful hope they do not catch the injury bug for the second straight year and they have a Red Sox type happy ending to the 2005 season 2. Chicago Cubs: Sammy Sosa basically was a .231 hitter away from Wrigley Field last season. Chicago did what was suggested by me, many of their fans and others around the country --- deal Mr. “It’s for real.” My question is did the Cubs get enough in return for corky, I mean Sammy? Getting Jerry Hairston and a couple ‘nice’ players will not get them where they want to go. Plus, losing Moises Alou (36 doubles, 39 homers and 106RBI) may have been an even bigger blow to a Cubs lineup that ranked 11th in the league in stolen bases and on-base percentage. However, unlike St. Louis, the Cubs experienced injury bug misery. Neither Kerry Wood nor Mark Prior - the two most respected starting pitchers in the Cubs rotation coming into 2004 - threw 150+ innings. Only two Cubs pitchers threw over 200 innings work and they were Greg Maddux (14-time Gold Glove winner) and Carlos Zambrano (16-8 with 107 more strikeouts than walks). Heading into the year the health or Prior, Wood and even closer Joe Borowski does not look all that promising. Borowski’s injury is the biggest since he is projected to be out the longest. Chicago saved only 42 games in 2004 (tied for 11th in the National League) and failed to close out games on quite a few occasions. Closer duties now sit with LaTroy Hawkins, a former member of the Minnesota Twins that did his fair share of closing prior to coming to the windy city.
