It all started out with a four-team league that was designed to follow Little League Baseball, which at that time was only involved with the 5- 12 age categories. In 1952 the Middle Atlantic Region of Babe Ruth Baseball was established with the formation of a division for 13-15 year-olds. The Middle Atlantic Region was made up of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, West Virginia and Ontario, Canada. In 1965 New York was divided into two “states” – Upstate New York and Metro New York. 4 In 1968 New Jersey was divided into two “states” – Northern New Jersey and Southern New Jersey. Northern New Jersey Southern New Jersey In 1970 West Virginia was moved into the Ohio Valley Region and Virginia was moved into the Southeast Region. In 1987 another “state” was added when Upstate New York was further divided into Western New York and Eastern New York. Western New York Eastern New York Metro New York 5 In 2016 Babe Ruth Leagues, Inc. combined Metro New York and Eastern New York into one state. Western New York Eastern New York In 2018 Babe Ruth Leagues, Inc. setup a pilot program to divide Eastern New York into North ENY and South ENY. That was made permanent in 2020 with the states being designated as Eastern New York and Southern New York Eastern New York Southern New York Today the Middle Atlantic Region for the 13-18 divisions consists of Delaware, Eastern New York, Southern New York, Maryland, Northern New Jersey, Southern New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Western New York, and Ontario, Canada. ADDING THE YOUNGER KIDS In 1982 Babe Ruth Leagues, Inc. created the Bambino Division for players 5-12 years of age. In 2000 that division was renamed to the Cal Ripken Division of Babe Ruth Baseball. In 2006 Pennsylvania split into two “states” -- Western PA and Metro PA -- for the Cal Ripken Division age groups. The names have since been changed to Northwest PA and Southeast PA. Today the Middle Atlantic Region for the 5-12 divisions consists of Delaware, Eastern New York, Southern New York, Maryland, Metro New York, Northern New Jersey, Northwest Pennsylvania, Southeast Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey, Western New York, and Ontario, Canada. Today there are over 100,000 boys and girls playing Babe Ruth Baseball in the Middle Atlantic Region. 6 BABE RUTH LEAGUE, INC. • 2020 International League Field Managers Eight Il Clubs to Be Led by New Skippers This Season
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 11, 2020 2020 INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FIELD MANAGERS EIGHT IL CLUBS TO BE LED BY NEW SKIPPERS THIS SEASON When the International League's 137th season opens on April 9, eight of the circuit’s fourteen teams will have a new manager leading the quest to capture the coveted Governors’ Cup trophy. Only six managers return from the 2019 season, although several of the League’s new field generals bring pre-existing ties to their teams and communities. It is the first time since 2006 that more than half of the circuit’s clubs changed managers during an offseason. The reining IL Manager of the Year Damon Berryhill is the International League’s longest- tenured manager, preparing to begin his fourth season at the helm of the Gwinnett Stripers. Also hoping to get his team back to the postseason is Brady Williams, who took Durham to the finals in his first year with the Bulls in 2019. They will be challenged in the South Division by another returning manager in Norfolk, Gary Kendall. The 2018 IL Manager of the Year, Lehigh Valley’s Gary Jones, will lead the IronPigs once again this season. Like Jones, Brian Esposito in Indianapolis is also at the helm for the third straight campaign. IL Hall of Famer Billy McMillon will manage the Red Sox for the franchise’s final season at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. Two men have found themselves moving from a coach’s role to the manager’s chair in 2020. Pennsylvania-native Doug Davis (former Syracuse manager) takes over in Scranton/Wilkes- Barre after three seasons coaching, while in Columbus, Ohio-native Andy Tracy is the new manager after helping lead the Clippers to the 2019 Governors’ Cup title as hitting coach.
