2 Vice Chancellor's Report (2016-2017)

It is my honor and privilege to present the Vice- Chancellor’s Progress Report on the occasion of this third Convocation of the Shiv Nadar University.

The University was established by an Act of the State of Uttar Pradesh, and began its operations on the 18th of August 2011, with 265 undergraduate students pursuing degrees in five engineering majors and mathematics and a single Master’s student.

In these six years, the University has grown considerably in scale and scope, and has made substantial progress towards achieving the goal of creating a comprehensive / multidisciplinary, student- centric and research-focused university. Today we have 2,115 students enrolled at the University – of these 1,806 are undergraduates, 164 Master’s and 145 are doctoral students. The diverse student body, coming from 27 states & UTs in the country, is spread across 15 undergraduate, 10 Master’s and 13 doctoral programs in four Schools: School of Engineering, School of Humanities & Social Sciences, School of Natural S c i e n c e s , a n d S c h o o l o f M a n a g e m e n t & Entrepreneurship. The fifth School at the University, the School of Extended Education and Professional Development, is focused on extending the reach of the University by offering short-duration educational and training programs to individuals, companies, and Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh governmental and non-governmental organizations.

The University had a clear vision and a mandate from the Founder from day-1, and through our innovative ways and our relentless efforts, with our unwavering commitment towards excellence, and very importantly, with the support of our partners, advisors & well-wishers, we have already reached a stage where our peers have started recognizing our distinct mark.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) Inspection Report on Shiv Nadar University in 2016 was exceptionally encouraging, and the detailed testimony covered all the aspects of functioning of the University. UGC subsequently accepted Shiv Nadar University's response to the observations / suggestions of the UGC Inspection Committee and the AICTE Expert Committee on 18 November 2016.

Shiv Nadar University was honored as the "University of the Year" (in existence for less than 10 years category) at the FICCI Higher Education Excellence Awards ceremony in November 2016. The FICCI Higher Education Excellence Awards recognize the achievements and work done by institutions and individuals in improving the quality of Higher Education in India.

Shiv Nadar University has been selected for hosting an Atal Incubation Centre (AIC), supported by the Niti Aayog. There was a total of 1719 academic applicants, and 1939 non-academic ones. After a four-stage evaluation process, the selection decision was received on 21 March 2017.

2016 marked the second edition of the annual exercise under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), carried out under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. In its first attempt, Shiv Nadar University has now received the distinct honor of the youngest institution in the Overall Top-100 list. In the results announced on 3 April 2017, Shiv Nadar University got ranked 60 in the 'University' category, and 96 in the 'Overall' category. It ranked 8th ‘Overall’ amongst institutions in existence for less than 10 years. In "Research & Professional Practice", SNU's "Citations per Publication" of 4.61 is next to IISc's 5.01, and SNU's "Percentage in Top 25" of 28% is higher than IISc's 25%.

The growth of the University has been more in its depth and intellectual strength than in headcounts. Looking at our scholarly activities and their impact, some peaks of excellence can already be recognized. The idea now is to consolidate, strategize and march forward such that the overall output goes up, the impact is felt in the nation & world-wide, and the sharp peaks of excellence are sustained in the important areas of our choice.

Innovative Curriculum and Research Focus

As recognized by the UGC Expert Committee, during a short span of its existence,

Shiv Nadar University has developed a unique multidisciplinary curriculum at the undergraduate level providing students with an unprecedented, well-rounded education by synthesizing broad and strong multidisciplinary foundation with an in-depth training in their selected discipline.

The curriculum emphasizes on fostering students’ ability to integrate critical thinking, interpretive skills, scientific exploration and normative principles.

The in-built flexibility of the undergraduate curriculum has scope for every student to chart out her/his own academic path and to progress through the program at her/his own pace.

It is worth mentioning that Dr. Girish Agrawal, Associate Director, School of Engineering, has been named to a special-purpose AICTE Committee constituted to draft a concept paper for revising the undergraduate curriculum in engineering. The Committee’s mandate is to rethink and revise the existing undergraduate engineering curriculum with a particular focus on project-based learning, as SNU has been advocating.

3 Vice Chancellor's Report

A major component of the mission of any university has to be creation of knowledge (by researching), and not just disseminating it (by teaching). Research at the University is not limited to faculty and doctoral students.

The Opportunities for Undergraduate Research (OUR) program is enabling undergraduate students to undertake research projects with the faculty members outside the regular curriculum and to publish their research work in high-impact journals.

Over 85% of our undergraduate and postgraduate students receive some form of scholarship or financial aid, and all our doctoral students receive stipends and tuition fee waivers. In 2016-17 the University disbursed ` 31.8 crores as scholarships to undergraduate students, and stipends worth approx. ` 15 crore to postgraduate and doctoral students. I am happy to share that the University is launching a unique Master’s program on Water Science & Policy this year, led by Dr. Mihir Shah, Distinguished Professor in the Center for Public Affairs and Critical Theory (C-PACT), SNU. The challenges of the 21st century demand a new understanding and a fresh approach to water in India and across the world. Ours is a first-of-its-kind academic program, which offers a multidisciplinary perspective on water, with a special focus on policy and practical solutions. The modular structure of the program allows different stakeholders to choose from these multiple Certificate and Diploma options. The Government has hailed the University’s initiative in this direction, with Mr. Amitabh Kant, CEO of Niti Aayog, personally urging the State Governments to actively participate in the Inception Workshop held at the end of April “to spread the movement for major reforms in the water sector”.

It is with immense pride and satisfaction, I inform you that the first (regular) Ph.D. degree of the University is being awarded to Mr. Ravi Kant Upadhyay, who was admitted in the Department of Chemistry, School of Natural Sciences, in August 2012, but worked under Dr. Susanta Sinha Roy in the Department of Physics, School of Natural Sciences. Ravi defended his thesis successfully on 2 December 2016, and has since joined a very well-paid post-doctoral position in Mechanical Engineering and Chemical & Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta, Canada. Ms. Swapnil Shukla was the second student to complete her Ph.D. requirements very satisfactorily – she worked under Dr. Bimlesh Lochab in the Department of Chemistry, School of Natural Sciences, and her thesis defense was held on 12 December 2016. A few more doctoral students have submitted their theses, and are going to graduate soon, spreading the research agenda of the University.

Infrastructure

On its sprawling 256-acre campus, the University has invested in state-of-the-art laboratories & studios, classrooms, a central library, student hostels, dining and sports facilities. A dedicated 24x7 Research Block became operational last November, where scholars are now engaged in tackling some of the most pressing problems of our times – contributing to the creation of new knowledge at the frontiers of specialized areas of physical science, materials science, chemical science and life sciences as well as at the interface of these diverse disciplines, expanding the scope of human understanding, and striving for the betterment of the world.

Faculty Excellence

Drawn from top-ranked universities, Shiv Nadar University has around 200 faculty members who are educators and inspired practitioners in their areas of expertise. The faculty members are scholars of international repute, key advisors to the government, and well known authors and/or artists. The University system enables and empowers them, to let them do what they do the best, towards the vision and mission of the University. Till date, the faculty members have authored 419 journal articles, 111 books and chapters in books, 513 conference papers & presentations, held 99 exhibitions and performances, and attracted external funding of more than ` 17 crore in research projects. Some of the exemplary research work done by our faculty and research scholars have been published in top journals such as Nature, and already garnered media attention. For example, Dr. Ram Sagar Misra, Department of Chemistry, along with his collaborators led by Prof. Benjamin Davis from the University of Oxford and Dr. Matthew Paul from the Rothamsted Research, Harpenden, UK, has discovered a process to radically increase crop yields in wheat by up to 50%. This discovery has already been acclaimed globally.

Student Achievements

Our students have made us proud in their academic as well as extra-curricular pursuits. To name a few, Ms. Shagufta Kaur Bhangu (Ph.D. student, Department of Sociology) received the Fulbright scholarship for Doctoral students. Another student, Ms. Bhumika Dubey (M.Sc. in Bioinformatics) received the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship to work at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain. Some of the International awards and recognitions received by our undergraduate students from different programs include Charpak Scholarship of Excellence by the French Government to Mr. Siddharth Sharma (B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering) to pursue Masters at Arts et Métiers Paris Tech; Amgen Scholarship to Ms. Keerthana AK [B.Sc.(Research) in Chemistry] at the University of Tokyo; Summer Research Internship at Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), Madrid with Full financial support to Ms. Ranjitha Boopathy [B.Sc.(Research) in Biotechnology]. Our students were also part of some of the prestigious internship programs and represented not only the University but also our country.

The Founder and Trustees of the Shiv Nadar Foundation, all my colleagues – the faculty, staff and administrators, my dear students and alumni of the Shiv Nadar University, parents & family members, and friends, thank you for your support to the University, and for joining us for this landmark event.

13 May 2017 Rupamanjari Ghosh Vice Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University

12 Faculty Reminisces

Dr. Tulika Chandra, Dean of Students’ Welfare

All of you have got a great life ahead of you and no matter how many times you fall, get up, brush yourself up and laugh at your own antics, don't forget to stay happy. Go ahead and make plans, and try to travel the road not taken, because the most difficult roads often lead to the most beautiful destinations. Live your life like you are dancing in a big ballroom, move around, enjoy to the fullest, and if you stumble, make it your signature move. You will have to make a lot of decisions in life, don't rush through them like you rush to your 9 am classes. It's been boundless years, it's been a great time. We all will miss you. We will miss you wandering around in the cafeteria, we will miss the absurd hairdos, and the campus will miss your laughter resonating in the hallways, your bright and sullen faces after your assignments, your miraculous appearances at morning classes with malodorous breath, your 'missing home' phase, your 'I broke my bone' phase. As I recount, I have some special moments and meaningful memories with you, the 2017 outgoing batch. Right from your joining the campus as first years till today, we have seen together - the interests and passions, concerns, complaints, Breeze preparations, achievements, requests for extensions for everything ...and now a much mature SNUite.

Prof. Ajay Dandekar, Director, School of Humanities and Social Sciences

"It is with fond memories and best of wishes from all of us in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences that you depart. A Brave New World awaits you with immense opportunities. Create your own universe that is humane and just and enjoy the journey you embark on. Do look back to these years at times with fondness!"

Dr. Dinkar Prasad, Associate Director (Academics), School of Engineering

Dear Class of 2017, you are about to cross an important mile stone in your life. Knowledge acquired at this University will be valuable. Hard work, positive attitude and self discipline will help realize your dreams. Wish you a bright future!

Dr. Susanta Sinha Roy, Associate Professor, Department of Physics

First of all congratulations to all the graduating students! Now it is the time to explore the world with your knowledge and creativity, which we have imparted at Shiv Nadar University. My advice would be to allow yourself some time to settle in your new work/study place, don't keep too many options open, and focus on your strengths. Wherever possible, demonstrate evidence of commitment and confidence according to your ability. There will be lot of ups and downs, uncertainty but be positive always. If you need some guidance, always ask for help from your parents and peers. Stay in touch with SNU. I look forward to read your success stories in future. As the 2017 Batch graduates, the first doctoral student to receive a Ph.D. from Shiv Nadar University - Ravi Kant Upadhyay will also graduate. I have been the faculty advisor for Ravi Kant through his Ph.D. journey, and when I connect the dots from his first year to fourth year, I see how brilliantly he crossed the bridge. Ravi had joined the Department of Chemistry yet he could pursue his doctoral research under my guidance, thanks to SNU that encourages interdisciplinary research. I have seen Ravi Kant's transformation from a student to an independent researcher. Soon after completing his doctoral research Dr. Ravi Kant was offered an opportunity to works as PDRF at the University of Alberta, Canada.

13 Faculty Reminisces

Mr. Nishant Mishra, Assistant Dean of Students’ Welfare

I have mixed feelings while penning down this recollection for all of you - I have known you as my N1, N2, ABCD, and WXYZ batches - the favorite ones till date! Yes, I am announcing this officially - Your batch is my favorite one till date. It seems just like yesterday when I walked into your class in the first year to introduce myself as a teacher for Engineering Graphics. And then the wonderful intro classes! The memories are still afresh. There has always been a special connection which I have had with your batch, especially since we have known each other from the start. I interviewed most of you, a wonderful experience which I will always cherish.

There is something more as to why I am writing this note; something more that I want to share with you not only as a teacher, but also a friend. Few of you would have already joined your respective organizations and many of you must be waiting for your joining dates. Then there are few of you who are still looking out to explore different avenues. Learn to enjoy the journey that you are about to embark upon, but be patient and persevere through the ups and downs that you will face. Because, as Vince Lombardi said - “Life's battle don't always go to the faster or stronger man, but sooner or later, the one who wins is the one who thinks he can". You need to keep challenging yourself - challenging your extremities, coming out of your comfort zones, challenge your energies, mental boundaries.

Also, never be afraid of taking calculated risks, because those who sit on the shores might be relaxed, but the pearls always go to the ones who are not afraid of taking the plunge in deep, mysterious waters of the ocean, and are not worried about fear of the unknown. So, rise and shine and find the purpose for which you are here in this world, and make the most of the gift of life by God. Now is the time, your time. It was lovely being with all of you. Please reach out to me if in case you need any help in future. I will try and help in whatever capacity I can. Keep me posted of any updates in your life."

Dr. Bimlesh Lochab, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry

Being a part of the university since its very inception, a graduating batch of students seem to be a culmination of the hard work, sincerity and vision that went into Shiv Nadar University. Personally, it is a joy to see these young minds reach the very first milestone of there long and promising careers. I have had the opportunity to work with the students closely through various courses, practicals, activities, more importantly setting up the research labs etc. and it is a matter of pride that in the four years of these course they have not only excelled scholastically but have also developed a well rounded personality which is sought after in the society. I wish them good luck and have full confidence that the graduating batch of 2017 will not only exceed the performance of their predecessors but also be an inspiration to the upcoming batch of students.

Dr. Shrimoy Roy Chaudhury, Assistant Professor, Department of History

At Shiv Nadar University I have been exposed to students who are excited and curious about the range of practices, which produce various forms of knowledge. This has been made possible by the opportunity I have had to teach undergraduate students across disciplines. Many of them, who attended my CCC on film and history are graduating this year. They have been instrumental in developing this course through their questions, fresh insights, and enthusiasm. I thank them for the contribution they have made to help me reflect on the work that I am doing. I also hope that we, as a faculty have enhanced their intellectual curiosity and ability to pose relevant questions. My heartfelt congratulations to the graduating batch of 2017.

14 Memorabilia - Class of 2017

There are many experiences and changes that SNU has brought into my life. One of the major change was - fighting the stage fear. Be it giving a performance at Freshers’ Night or giving an audition for the Dramatics club in front of a packed room. It was from the Freshers’ Night, when I started making friends and mingling with people. Earlier I couldn't go to a stranger and say 'Hi'. Now, I can have a small talk. I am also one of the Founding Members of STIMULUS -The Discussion Society of SNU. The discussions I had in the society's events brought out of me the fear of expressing the thoughts in front of others. With Imprints – The Dramatics Society, I did a few performances in the Campus. Be it playing a role of Beggar or a teenage girl or Mother. It was all fun.

I have now become more of a realistic person. I have come out of my own world where I had nothing to do with others. I have developed a few good habits like reading books and considering others opinions.

15 Memorabilia - Class of 2017

Ram Rohit G. B.Tech. in Electronics and Communication Engineering

Four years at SNU were really an amazing journey. It has given me a wide range of opportunities right from the beginning. I always had a passion of exploring how things work. My subjects of Electronics and Communication have always been interesting and have added to my growing interest in the field. This interest led me to take up Junior Teaching Assistantship for the course Digital Electronics in my 4th year. When I first started working as a student co-ordinator at CDC (as part of the OCJs), I was exposed to the professional work culture for the first time. Right from there, I was closely involved in the placement process. I was part of the CDC as an OCJ for four terms. Shiv Nadar University is a place where you are exposed to multiple activities at one point of time. While all this was happening, I also got the opportunity to learn and explore the nuances of organizing events. I was part of the organizing team of our annual Festival - Breeze consecutively for three years. Whether it was a Farewell, Convocation or President of India's visit, I got the opportunity to learn from professionals in the field. Words alone are not sufficient to share my life at SNU.

16 Memorabilia - Class of 2017

Parth Dhanjal B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering

Shiv Nadar University has changed my life in the past four years. Since the very first day, the campus has become an integral part of my life. The people, the culture, the environment, I have embraced everything. When I came to the University, I was very shy and clumsy. My friends helped me grow and come out of the shell. I had incredible opportunities at this place whether its student council, research, clubs, or On Campus Jobs (OCJs). And of course the liberty provided on the campus complimented all this perfectly.

I was an OCJ with Career Development Center for nearly one and a half years. This helped me gain confidence, understand the corporate side, network with people and also gave me an insight into sales. As part of the student council, I became very active when it came to group discussions and peer connectivity. I headed the Student Transport Committee for almost a year and a half and re- organized the committee's structure which helped me in understanding and improving on skills of leadership, time management, resource management and other aspects of overall growth.

Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the University, despite being an Engineering student, I was exposed various other courses as well. I have completed my Minor in Management and Entrepreneurship Studies. With SNU, I have a clear thought of what to pursue in the near future.

17 Memorabilia - Class of 2017

My tenure at Shiv Nadar University has been truly enriching with delightful experiences and ample exposure in life. The University offers plenty of opportunities in terms of academics and extracurricular, equipping us with the right skills and providing us with a strong foundation. Being a residential campus, you experience the best and worst of boarding life which culminates into treasured memories. In my four years I have interacted with amazing individuals both in the professional as well as personal front and have formed long-lasting relationships.

25 Flora-Fauna

The sprawling 286 acre campus of Shiv Nadar University is blessed with natural bounty and enjoys the company of diverse flora and fauna. In this edition, continuing with our exploration of medicinal plants, we bring to you Giant Indian Milkweed or Safed Aak. And, our rather shy and less frequently spotted friend Indian Jackal that prowls in the land spread across the University.

Giant Indian Milkweed

Giant Indian Milkweed (Calotropis gigantea) of the family Apocynaceae, is found growing as wild Shrub along roadsides and in waste lands. It is also cultivated in temples as well as home gardens due to religious beliefs. Also known as Crown Flower or Safed Aak, it is an erect shrub, which grows upto 1-3 m tall and contains milky latex. It's young branches and under surface of leaves are densely covered with white tomentum. Leaves are opposite-decussate, sub-sessile, 10-25 cm long, and elliptic-oblong. Flowering and fruiting is observed for most part of the year and flowers are white, arranged in umbellate cymes. The seeds are numerous with silky white coma. Traditionally, C. gigantea is used alone or with other medicinal plants to treat common diseases such as fevers, rheumatism, indigestion, cough, cold, eczema, asthma, elephantiasis, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Indian Jackal

The Indian jackal (Canis aureus indicus), also known as the Himalayan jackal is a subspecies of golden jackal native to Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Burma and Nepal. Its fur is a mixture of black and white, with buff on the shoulders, ears and legs. Black hairs predominate on the middle of the back and tail. The belly, chest and the sides of the legs are creamy white, while the face and lower flanks are grizzled with grey fur. It is generally of a rich colour than the common jackal, the pale areas of the back being of a pale buff colour rather than whitish or silver. Adults are slightly larger than common jackals, and grow to a length of 39 inches, 14–18 inches in height and 8–11 kg in weight. It typically inhabits lowlands on the outskirts of towns, villages and farms, where they shelter in holes among ruins or dense brush. Except during hot periods, the Indian jackal usually only leaves its den at dusk and retires at dawn. Though primarily a scavenger which subsists on garbage and offal, it supplements its diet with rodents, reptiles, fruit and insects. It usually form small packs when hunting small deer and antelopes. Although it will occasionally kill poultry and lambs, it is largely harmless. When wild prey is scarce, it usually takes to eating vegetable matter, including maize and Jujube fruit. Golden jackals appear prominently in Indian and Nepali folklore, where they often take over the role of the trickster taken by the red fox in Europe and North America.

Preserving Nature

It was a pleasant afternoon, with sun playing hide and seek, when one couldn't help but ignore the roar of JCBs and Cranes (machine) on a normally 'peaceful' campus. Soon the noises grew louder and before one would know - a 14 feet tree was in view, suspended in the air and slowly moving towards the E Block. It was a sight, as the tall date palm was taken towards the already prepared land by a Crane, and was fixated on the land within a few minutes. By the time the leadership, students, and staff had gathered to look and marvel at the sight, where now stood three tall, fully grown date palms, which were translocated from the old location to this new, more prominent one. A first at Shiv Nadar University - it was an effort by the University administration to save the trees from getting axed, as the civilization takes its course and root out things that come in between.

Committed towards curating the diverse variety of flora and fauna found on the campus, the University is making conscious efforts to retain the old-grown palm trees spread across the institution. Owing to the growing civilization, the campus was likely to lose some of its trees, as old as 35-40 years. The administration has made efforts to curate and relocate these trees, which are part of the natural habitat at Shiv Nadar University. As part of the drive, four old-grown date palms were translocated at two central locations of the University - the Central Vista near E Block, and the area near the Open Stage.

Replanting fully grown trees is a science in itself, and not all species of tree survive replantation, informs Rajiv Swarup, President, Shiv Nadar University. "We have selected date palm which have over 80% success rate if transplanted with care and have removed them from the land, where development has been planned," says Swarup. "These trees in all likelihood would have been felled as human settlements come up there. By transplanting these trees we save them."

The relocation of trees was a welcome move, as the four trees had faced the threat of getting lost. "Shiv Nadar University has made continuous efforts to maintain and retain the natural surroundings of the campus, and we didn't want to give-up on the natural old-grown palm trees that adorned the campus," says Bhaskar Mishra, who Heads the Administration at Shiv Nadar University. "At that moment, we thought it was time to walk the talk and take measure to save the palms." Translocating a fully-grown tree involves precision in the process and flawless execution. If the tree is not extricated from its origin by employing the preset methods, it may simply wither. "The preparation for translocating a fully grown tree can take two to three months," according to Harpal Singh, who is instrumental in landscaping the University's vast spaces. "Following a treatment for relocation, once the roots are ready and moist, the trees can be transplanted."

The University's concern towards the environment and the ecosystem around reflects in ways, more than one. Some of the natural assets carefully curated at the University include the SNU lake, the SNU forest spread over 2 acres of land, and 52 fully grown trees and 17 treeclusters inside the campus. The University management has ensured that not a single tree was cut during the construction of various buildings and roads. These trees were not only protected but also incorporated into the campus landscape designs.

Installation of Riyaz Komu’s Work

The recently installed, work by contemporary artist Riyaz Komu - 'Fourth World' now adorns the porch of iconic library building at Shiv Nadar University. The three terracotta sculptures of four lions sitting on their haunches, mounted atop a teak-and-rosewood box is a reflection on the changing Indian state and social environment. The sculpture is made of terracotta, recycled wood, electrical motor and rubber, and is inspired by the Indian emblem, which was adapted from the Ashoka Lion Capital when the nation became republic on 26 January 1950. The lions symbolize the Buddhist core of the Ashoka Lion Capital. When the sculpture swirls, the fourth lion starts missing. The contemporary artist - Komu explains, the disappearing act of the fourth lion thus: It is the fourth dimension that goes missing when the sculpture starts to rotate. It makes one aware of the unseen forces that are at play, which we are aware of but are unable to control. The missing fourth lion signifies those unseen forces that drive us, dictating life around us, deciding our individual destiny and collective fate.

1/25/2017 What education sector expects from Budget 2017 : Business Today

Print Close What education sector expects from Budget 2017 Partha Chatterjee January 20, 2017

The year 2017 will be a year to watch. Not because I expect some watershed event to happen, but because of what happened in 2016. The last year was eventful to say the least both within India and outside. The full effect of these events will be felt in the current year. How the future of the world, and India, shapes up will depend on actions and policies of governments across the world. I do not think that any point in the recent past we waited so anxiously to see Partha Chatterjee what governments do in US, in UK and in India.
