OUR UNIVERSITY EMBLEM What it signifies The crest and the motto adopted by the Acharya Nagarjuna University represent the creative essence of Indian culture oriented to the contemporary aspirations. The symbolism is based on the concept that all human excellence proceeds from truth and culminates in truth. The individual symbols in the crest are emblematically related to one another so as to suggest the upward evolution of the force from material plenitude and manifest reality towards spiritual magnificence and universal consciousness. The young initiated into knowledge at the University shall achieve identity, growth, self-differentiation and fulfillment in the various ascensions of intellectual and spiritual states shown in the symbolic scheme of the crest. The vase of plenty (PURNA-GHATA) is a prototype from the Amaravati sculpture of the early centuries of the Christian era. It stands for material prosperity on the one hand and objective knowledge on the other. Its traditional attributes are sasya (fertility), Santana (increase), sampat (prosperity) and samriddhi (plentitude). The vase is also a paradigmatic representation of the Universe and the creative cycle according to ancient Indian scriptures. Its face is Vishnu, the sustainer; its neck is Rudra, the apocalyptic transformer; its base is Brahma, the creator. Arising out of the superabundant water of life sprouting from purna ghata and transcending the mundane level, illuminated by the resplendent halo of the Sun, is the freshly blossoming Lotus. The pool of waters (manasa sarovara) symbolizes the creative. On the apex are the dharma-chakra and the Lotus representing the creative readiness of the mind to respond to the summons of the creative evolution symbolized by the solar orb. On the apex are the dharma-chakra (the wheel of eternal law) flanked by harinas (deer), overarched by the visva-padma (the cosmic Lotus) flanked by makaras (symbols of the cosmic consciousness). The dharma chakra is reminiscent not only of rita but also of the Buddha’s promulgation of the law (dharma chakrapravartana). The deers, too have a two-fold connotation. On the one hand, they represent beatitude, and on the other, the highest point of universal consciousness. The motto, ‘Satye Sarvam Pratishtitam’ is an epigrammatic representation of the entire symbolism of the crest. Its is singularly appropriate to the ideals and functions of the University which is dedicated to the pursuit of truth which is the ultimate abode of all.

1 About the University

Acharya Nagarjuna University, a state university, established in 1976 has been constantly striving towards achieving progress and expansion during its existence for over three decades, in terms of introducing new courses in constituent University Colleges, affiliated UG and PG colleges and professional colleges. Spread over about 300 acres of land on the National High Way(NH-5) between Vijayawada and Guntur of Andhra Pradesh, the University is one of the fastest expanding Universities in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is named after Acharya Nagarjuna - one of the most brilliant preceptors and philosophers, whose depth of thought, clarity of perception and spiritual insight was such that even after centuries, he is a source of inspiration to a vast number of people in many countries. The University is fortunate to be situated on the very soil where he was born and lived, a soil made more sacred by the aspiration for light and a state of wholesomeness by generation of students. With a Campus student strength of over 5000, the University offers instruction for higher learning in 50 PG programs and guidance for the award of M.Phil and Ph.D in 48 disciplines spread over six campus colleges and one PG campus at Ongole. It also offers 153 UG programs in 412 affiliated colleges in the regions of Guntur and Prakasam Districts. It has a center for Distance Education offering 87 UG and PG programs. Characterized by its heterogeneous students and faculty hailing from different parts of the state and the country, the University provides most hospitable environment for pursuing Higher Learning and Research. Our aim is to remain connected academically at the forefront of all higher educational institutions. Further, Acharya Nagarjuna University wishes to inform and share a happy news that Acharya Nagarjuna University has been ranked as 47 among 400 Indian Universities, 1040 out of 3750 Universities in Asia and 3490 in the world ranking. This ranking is based upon several parameters. University College of Arts, Commerce & Law ANU College of Arts, Commerce & Law, one the six colleges on the campus. It has 22 Departments and Research Centers, with a student strength of nearly 2000 students, including research scholars. It has Departments in the faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Commerce & Business Management . it is committed to teaching and research, with its youthful and knowledgeable faculty involving themselves in newer methods of innovation in teaching and research in frontier areas. A number of Major and Minor Projects on a diverse areas with great relevance to the societal needs are in progress. Co-curricular in the form of NSS, and Youth Festivals, induction Programmees for fresher’s and Academic Exhibitions are some of the inspiring features of the University, in general. University is also providing medical facilities to the students. Good hostel facilities are also available to the students on the campus. With the introduction of such innovative practices such as Credit-Based Evaluation and updating of syllabi, on a par with the UGC curriculum and providing coaching for NET examinations are some of the gainful initiatives for the welfare of the students. 4 ACHARYA NAGARJUNA UNIVERSITY :: NAGARJUNANAGAR DIRECTORATE OF ADMISSIONS In order to stream line the Post Graduation admission of Students and Research Scholars into various P.G. and Research programs of Acharya Nagarjuna University, the Directorate of Admissions‘ was established in the Academic Year 2003-04. It envisages the admissions through centralized Single Window facilitating students and different Departments / Colleges of the University. It also makes easy to follow particular time schedule for University admissions in each Academic Year and complete the process Dr. M. Rami Reddy on time allowing smooth conduct of curriculum as per Academic Calendar. Prabhakara Rao (Department of Mathematics), Prof. P.V.V. Satyanarayana (Department of Chemistry), Prof. M.V.S. Koteswara Rao (Department of Political Science & Public Administration), Dr. G. Rosaiah (Department of Botany & Microbiology) and Dr. M. Rami Reddy (Department of Physics). The Directorate gives notification with clear schedule for student admission of an academic year through daily news papers covering Andhra Pradesh State, preferably in the month of February. This year onwards Online Applications are available to the candidates seeking admission into different P.G. Courses of M.A., M.Sc., M.Com., M.S.W., M.H.R.M., M.Ed., M.P.Ed., Integrated 5 Year Programs (MBA-International Business and M.Sc. Nanotechnology) and Post Graduate Diploma Courses (Ambedkar Studies, Mahayana Buddhist Studies and Yoga for Human Excellence). The student can apply through Online Application for admission from the University Websites www.anudoa.in or www.anu.ac.in/doa, by paying prescribed charges in the form of Challan or Net Banking / Credit Card / Debit Cards. A minimum of two months time is prescribed for receiving filled in application from the date of notification. Admission of students into all PG courses is made on the basis of the Rank obtained by them in the Entrance Test conducted by the Directorate of Admissions. After receiving the applications, the Hall Tickets will be downloaded from the website with the details of Date, Time and centre of entrance test. Entrance test is conducted for 100 Marks and test paper contains 100 Multiple Choice Questions set from prescribed syllabus. The candidates have to mark their answers in OMR sheet provided to theme along with test booklet. The schedule of the Counseling for admissions is usually informed after declaring the Rank of the candidate. The admission process based on the rank is carried out by a computerized system programmed for ‘Option Exercise’ by candidate and ‘Sliding’ in the event of subsequent vacancy. The admission process is totally transparent and vivid with filled-in seats and vacant slots information in the counseling centre. The admission letters are issued to the selected candidates after collecting prescribed fee and directed to report to the principals of concerned colleges. The rule of reservation for SC, ST and BC is adhered strictly as per State Government order. The reservation in respect of NCC, Sports, Differently abled persons and Children of Armed forces Personnel is also followed. Fee reimbursement facility is made available to the eligible admitted students as per the norms of the State Government. The process of admission usually begins in the month of February and completes by the 3rd Week to enable the students to attend the classes from June last week onwards every year. The Directorate of Admissions takes care of collection of Tuition fee and other fees on behalf of all colleges into which admissions made and maintains accounts to release the money to the colleges after the closure of the admissions. The Directorate also makes similar arrangements and adopts the above procedure for the admission into M.Ed. (Part-Time), M.Tech (Evening Courses), M.Phil and Ph.D. programs. The Director works in harmony with University administration and Vice-Chancellor.

5 The Centre for Mahayana Buddhist studies (CMBS) was established in 1982 under the scholarly guidance of late Padma Vibhushan Prof. K. Satchidananda Murthy and the inspiration of the noted Archaeologist late Prof. R. Subrahmanyam, who extensively excavated the Nagarjunakonda Site in 1960, and the then External Affairs Minister Dr.P.V.Narasimha Rao. His Majesty the king of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuk inaugurated the Chair of Mahayana Buddhism and created also an Endowment Fund. The University Grants Commission gave a liberal grant for the academic staff and for the construction of a Caitya type building for housing the Centre. The Centre has organized an International Seminar on “The concept of peace in Buddhism” in 1993 and a National Seminar on “The Contribution of Andhakas Sects to the Growth and Development of Buddhism” in 2011, conducted a two day National Seminor on “Social Dimensions of Buddhism” on 16-17 September 2011. Very recently the centre organized UGC National Seminar on “Buddhist Applied Philosophy” in 2014 and conducted 7 series of Lectures Programme with eminent scholars, 7 from IIT faculty and Hyderabad Central University attended. Center is focused to upgrade the recent progess Many Indian and foreign Buddhist scholars participated and presented research papers on the various aspects of Buddhism. The research programmes both M.Phil and Ph.D in Buddhist Studies was started by the Centre in 1984. The teaching programme was started in 1993 with M.A. in Philosophy with emphasis on Buddhism, which has been restructured as Master’s Degree in Mahayana Bhuddhist Studies. The relevance and impact of Buddhism on contemporary society especially Buddhist Economics, Buddhist Applied Ethics, Buddhist meditation and Buddhist tourist circuits have been introduced in the syllabus. Both Indian and foreign students especially from Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and China are enrolled in both the research and teaching programmes. 7 GENESIS OF THE MBA & M.Com. COURSE: The Department of Commerce and Business Administration was started in the year 1967 as a part of Andhra University Post Graduate Centre with 40 Students in M.Com Course in response to the demand of the public and taking into account the educational needs of the region. The department has started a two year MBA program in the year 1978-79. The course structure and syllabi of the management program were designed taking in to consideration the academic strengths of the premier institutions that took lead in initiating MBA program in the country. The Government Agencies and certain prestigious semi government bodies and public and private sector organizations at the all India level have recruited about 2600 management graduates from this department.

17 The Department of Economics is one of the biggest and oldest Departments in the University established in the year 1976 with one Professor and three lecturers. Over a period of time, due to retirements of the Faculty, at present there are only one Professor and one Assistant Professor along with 9 Post Doctoral Fellows sponsored by the UGC and the ICSSR. The Department Offers M.A. Economics Course besides M.Phil. and Ph.D. Degrees in Economics. The Department in producing 45 Postgraduate Economics students every year. Further, on an average 6 Ph.D.s are being awarded in the Department. So far, more than 120 M.Phil. and 64 Ph.D. Degrees are awarded in the Department. The main thrust areas of research in the Department include Agricultural Economics, Rural development,Labour economics, Public finance, Industrial economics, Environmental economics, Demography, Development economics and econometrics. Former Prime Minister of India, Sri Manmohan Singh, Noble Laureate Sri John Hicks and Dr. Ursula Hicks visited the Department. The Students and the Scholars produced by the Department are at present working in high esteemed institutes like World Bank, RBI, Income Tax Department, Indian Railways etc., besides Central and State Government Institutes. Moreover, the Department has a credible record of the individual research projects. About 17 minor research projects founded by the UGC were successfully completed. The Department has been a pioneer in the Organization of the Conferences, National Seminars, Oriental Programmes for Refresher Courses and Research Methodology Courses. The Department has successfully conducted the Andhra Pradesh Economic Conference three times. The Department has also actively imparting remedial coaching for the students belonging to the weaker sections besides UGC NET coaching. The Computer Lab is also established in the Department to impart Computer Training to the Students. 22 The Department of English is one of the nine departments that constituted the Andhra University Post Graduate Centre that was started in 1967. Even at the time of starting, the department, instead of merely duplicating the subjects at Andhra University, Waltair, offered by way of innovation and experimentation a new specialisation, i.e., Commonwealth Literature, the first English Department in an Indian University to have made the bold venture. When the Post-Graduate Centre was upgraded as Nagarjuna University in 1976, the Department had successfully diversified the courses and added new and innovative specialisations, offering as many as ten courses covering the entire gamut of Literature available in English and English translation, be it from America, Russia, Europe, Africa, Asia, New Zealand, West Indies, Canada, Australia, without at the same time losing its basic character of British literature. The Department also strengthened the language stream by offering papers on Phonetics, Linguistics, Syntax and English Language Teaching. A modest language Laboratory has been established to give training in speaking and writing skills to the students. UGC Golbal seminar on Celebrating the Ancient/ contemporary wisdom of the fourth world (Natives / Aboriginals/Dalits) was organised by the Department of English during 14-16 December 2015.

A BRIEF HSTORY: After taking charge as Vice-Chancellor Prof. V. Balamohandas to his surprise found that there is no department of Hindi in A.N.U though it is the major national and official language and a long period of nearly thirty years passed by. At the first time, the Post Graduate course in Hindi has come into existence prior to this during the academic year 2005-2006. The Post Graduate Diploma in Hindi course was started in Hindu College, Guntur on 14th February 2006. With a strength of 10 students. A Separate Hindi Bhavan was constructed with about Rs. 1 Crore 20 Lakhs in which the University holds the Lion’s share of Rs. 65 Lakhs and the Governments of Rajastan, Madhya Pradesh each of Rs. 10 Lakhs and the Govt, of Chattisgarh Rs. 5 Lakhs and from Philanthropists 30 lakhs. The Department proved its enthusiasm in promoting activities for development of Hindi Our National Language by the way of organige a two day National Seminar on 20 & 21 September 2007. An National Seminar on Hindi Prachar ka Vikas, sponsored by Andhra Pradesh Hindi Academy and Acharya Nagarjuna University was conducted for Hindi Teachers by the department and A.P. Reddy, Chairman, APSCHE, Hyderabad, conceived the idea of 5 year integrated courses and also sactioned one crore rupees as the initial fund for the development of the Department. Prof. V. Balamohan Das, the then Vice-Chancellor, and Prof. Y.R. Haragopal Reddy former Vice-Chancellor who took keen interest in the department and provided the required infrastructure facilities like accommodation, furnished A.C. Seminar hall, Computer Aided Class Rooms, Language Lab, Library Room for this Course. The Department is currently offering 5 year Integrated MBA (IB) Programme, in Acharya Nagarjuna University Campus with an intake of 50 Students under Self-Finance Course. 38 The year 2003 heralded the debut and inauguration of the Department in A.N.U campus. The department has been taking up two-year master’s course and a research programme. The intake for the Masters course is 30 and more than 30 candidates were admitted into the Ph.D. and M.Phil. programme. The department, one of 179 such institutions spread across the length and width of the country, has been listed at item No. 110 on page 220 of “Mass media in India-2003, a Government of India publication. It had completed 13 fruitful years with excellent performance in academics, research and extension activity. It caters to the needs the students of 3 districts of Andhra Pradesh and train them to have up the skills as Media and communication professionals. Journalism and mass communication caters to the trained, professional man power requirements of a service industry vital to nation’s economic, cultural and social development. Since mass media has been expanding exponentially more and more opportunities have been coming in the way of students and professionals. Not only expansion fast diversification of the mass media is also enlarging the scope of the fields such as Advertising, Public Relations, Newspapers, Television, and Radio etc. For the last 13 years many of students had got regular placements in top media houses and some of them had entered into government services also. The university has access to Print media, Television, Radio houses and Advertising agencies in both Guntur and Vijayawada. All the leading dailies and magazines have offices in these two cities. 47 The establishment of the Education Department in 2007 in the campus was the fulfilment of the long cherished dream and desire of the teacher, teacher educators, research scholars and the academicia of ANU area. The M.Ed regular course with an intake of 25 students commenced in the year 2007- 2008. The second milestone in the history of the department was the starting of M.Ed (Part - time) course in 2008 catering to in service teachers of this region. The Department of education has to its credit the enrolment of International students specially from Bhutan since 2008. The NCTE has enhanced the intake to 35 students in the year 2010. The M.Ed. course was upgraged as a two year course from the academic year 2016 - 17 and 50 in 2015 offered in the Distance mode from 2014-16 with an intakes 250 sudents to different centres and 25 each ANU and Ongole Campus. The department is offering M.Phil, Ph.D Research Programmes and conducting in service Programmes to faculty of 94 B.Ed and 9 M.Ed colleges affiliated to the university. The tenth batch M.Ed (Regular) students are gearing themselves to match their seniors and turn out to be worthy teacher educators. 57 Department of Rural Development was started during the year 1992-93 with a view to train the students at post Graduate level in identifying the problems, local resources and to suggest the necessary strategies for rural development. This course has been designed with theoretical and field work orientation to the students. Students had to go to villages in every semester and to interact with the villagers in order to know their socio-economic conditions. Students will also organize awareness camps in the villages about various developmental programmes. Finally, they will submit field work reports about their findings. In this way students are imbibed field work techniques and methods. Besides, it has organised several awareness camps on rural development programmes in the selected villages. Faculty undertaken evaluation studies entrusted by District Rural Development Agency, Guntur. Faculty was associated with the rural development administration in organising workshops on various developmental programmes. Dr.K.R.R Mohan Rao Centre for Scientific Socialism was established in 1985 with an objective of conducting inter - disciplinary research in the area of social sciences and humanities. Centre has been offering two research programmes leading to the award of M.Phil and Ph.D respectively. Centre has so far produced 18 M.Phils and six Ph.d’s. It has organized 15 national, state level seminars and symposia including two international seminars. Proceedings of these seminars are published. Centre has been published seventeen books and around Prof. N. Anjaiah hundred research papers. 7755 CENTRE FOR WOMEN’S STUDIES Centre for Women’s Studies was founded in 1988 with an objective to promote gender sensitivity among the people of this region under the jurisdiction of Acharya Nagarjuna University. The thirst area of this centre is to conduct studies on role of women in the social movements and their role in the development of this particular region. It has undertaken some important projects and conducted seminars on gender studies and field based workshops. ‘Gender Audit’ one of the topics started by the centre. The centre is keen in promoting awareness against eve teasing and ragging. And the legal cell was also initiated by the university which is interlinked with the centre. Centre for Women Studies is offering research programmes in interdisciplinary level. And we are honoring eminent women personalities on the occasion of International Women’s Day on 8th March. On the occasion of National Integration week from 19-25th November 2012, the Centre has conducted a lecture programme on ‘Role of Women in Nation Building’. And the centre has also organized a two day workshop on ‘Contemporary Debates on Gender Studies on 27-28 Feb 2013. UGC Funded Gandhian Studies Centre was established in ANU Campus in April 2008 with the objectives: 1) To propagate the Ideals and Thoughts of Gandhi. 2) To install and develop in the youth religious and communal harmony. 3) To arrange for Lectures enlightening the various dimensions of Gandhian Philosophy, on a continuous basis. 4) To Honouring an eminent Gandhian for propagation of Gandhian Ideology.

To achieve these objectives, the following programmes and activities have been undertaken by the Centre. 1. To educate, acquaint and enlighten the University student community about Gandhi life and thought, elocution and essay writing competitions were conducted on Gandhi Jayanthi and Martyrs Day. Cash prizes and Books on Gandhian thought were given to the winners by the Vice- Chancellor. 2. To install and develop among students the spirit of communal harmony, the center has been conducting the National Communal Harmony Day. 3. To get the staff, scholars, students and public acquainted with Gandhian thought, book, back volumes and journals in the relevant areas have been procured and placed in the Central Library. This will enable the students and scholars interested in Gandhian thought to undertake research in the various dimensions of Gandhian thought. 4. Eminent Gandhian Scholars visited the Center and delivered lecturers on selected topics pertaining to Gandhian thought and its relevance in the different departments of the university. 5. Dr. S.N. 77 DISASTER MITIGATION CENTRE

Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution : Goals and Objectives : a) To increase the capacity of the organized sector including the Government to mitigate the effects of natural calamities; b) Help in the evolution of public policies in developing early warning systems and disaster resistant structures; and c) Devising specific guidelines for dissemination of technical and social science knowledge concerning measures for assessment, prediction and mitigation of natural disasters. d) Take up research programs on a continuing basis; e) Provide facilities for exposure to personnel of government and Non Governmental Organizations engaged in disaster management, community leaders and other select publics from the vulnerable Director Prof. K. Balachandrudu f) Develop a documentation centre and undertake extension activity on modest scale with a view to improve public awareness about precautions and safety measures among the vulnerable groups of the population. It has undertaken surveys of successive major cyclone-flood affected areas in Andhra Pradesh in 1977, 1979, 1980, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1990 and 1996, and communicated findings to the State Government. The DMC has collaborated with the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras) in the Planning Commission's Project on Natural Hazards Mitigation and cosponsored two seminars / workshops with NGO's during the VIII plan period. The faculty has published 16 research papers during the period.

Collaborative Work was also taken up with the Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, in developing a Certificate Course on Disaster Management with Dr. Ambedkar Andhra Pradesh Open University, Hyderabad, in the preparation of course material relating to disaster management. At the invitation of the ICSSR, Prof. C.V. Raghavulu took up a project on Review of research on Disaster Management in India and completed it. The faculty members have attended several national and international conferences / Workshops on disaster management. The DMC has submitted proposals to the UGC, the World Bank and the State Government for taking up long-term projects on research and training. Activities of the Guidance and Counselling unit: Disaster Mitigation Centre is providing guidance and counselling to the students interested in Disaster studies and giving advise to the NGOs in the policy making in the area of community development and service in the realms of disaster mitigation. Explain the plans of the institution for the next year. The Disaster Mitigation Centre proposes to start P.G. Course in Disaster Studies / P.G. Diploma in Disaster Studies with the approval of the UGC. Xeroxing facility: Students & Teachers of this Library can have Xerox copies of their requirement of Library material only. They are charged at the rate of 0.50 paisa per copy. 5. Internet Facility: Teachers, Research Scholars and Students of this University can utilize Internet facility on working days, as per the guidelines of the library. 6. Orientation Training: Library staff conducts Orientation Programmes on purposeful and effective usage of the Library to the newly admitted students of different departments at the beginning of the year. 7. S.C & ST Students Book Bank: There is a Book Bank facility exclusively for S.C and S.T students of all courses. They can borrow books from this Book Bank. 8. Competitive Examination Cell: There is a separate cell in the I Floor of the library for the competitive examinations books, which are useful for all the competitive examinations. The University started the Centre for Distance Education (CDE) from the Academic year 2003-04 with two UG courses and ten PG courses. There was a tremendous response from the students and 7,345 students joined the above 12 courses in 2003-04 Keeping in view the demands of the students, the CDE has also started the Calendar year batch for the UG courses from January 2004. In addition to the above courses, the University has started M.Sc., (Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Chemistry and Physics) from the Calendar batch of January 2004. The response from the in-service teachers, employees, housewives and dropout students was overwhelming and 3,244 students joined PG science courses and another 1805 students joined BA/B.Com., for the Calendar year batch January, 2004. 17,379 students were admitted during the Academic year 2004-2005 for 17 courses offered by the CDE. During the Academic year 2005-06 CDE has started B.A. (English), B.A. (Telugu), B.A. (Maths), B.Sc. 83 FINISHING SCHOOL A Profile The Concept of Finishing School is gaining lot of prominence now a days, especially during the on going period of economic recession world wide. Since the traditional courses at the UG and PG levels have broadly failed in imparting the specifice job skills to the graduates, they are remaining unemployable. In other words, there is a skill gap identified between what is acquired by graduates and what is expected by the industries. In order to address this skill gap in the short run, the APSCHE has come out with certain modules to train students in the requirementsts of the industry. The school which undertakes this responsibility of imparting training to the graduates, Dr. Nagaraju Battu in the specific requirement of the industry is called a Finishing School. Co-ordinator

The Government of Andhra Pradesh, since 2004 has been working in coordination with the industry and has earmarked funds for the Finishing School's courses. Universities offering the Finishing School courses would involve industry personnel for guest lectures along with intership and project in industries.
