The unruly ospring of white boy punk and rude boy ska, the new music s undeniable leaders were The Specials. Bursting out of Coventry s concrete jungle, their lyrics spoke of failed marriages, petty violence, crowded dance floors, gangsters and race hate - but with a wit that outshone their angry punk forebears. On stage they were electric, and at the heart of this energy was the vocal chemistry of the ethereal Terry Hall and Jamaican rude boy Neville Staple. In 1961, aged only five, Neville was sent to England to live with his father - a man for whom discipline bordered on child abuse. Growing up black in the Midlands of the Sixties and Seventies wasn t easy, but then Nev was hardly an angel. His youth was marked by scules with skins, compulsive womanising, and a life of crime that led from shopliing to burglary and eventually borstal and Wormwood Scrubs. But throughout there was music, and now Nev tells how a very bad boy became part of the most important band of the Eighties. He remembers sound system battles; the legendary 2-Tone tour with The Selecter, Madness and Dexy s - and their clashes with NF thugs. He recalls the band s increasing tensions and eventual split; his subsequent foray into bubblegum pop with Fun Boy Three; and a new found fame in America, as godfather to bands like Gwen Stefani s No Doubt. Finally he reflects on The Specials reunion and how even now, thirty years on, they... The exhibition drew solely on the RAR personal archive of Shelton and Gregory who were RAR (London) committee members, key contributors to the graphic design of RAR and Shelton took photographs of the movement’s events and contextual material. The exhibition was first shown in 2008 at the CHELSEA Space Gallery, London, and went on tour to venues in London and Croatia. The paper traces the tenacious pursuit of anti-racist agency of RAR that has not lost its historical relevancy in the twenty-first century. What is discussed here is the black and white dynamic of difference as unity against the intolerance of difference that marked Britain during this period; why and how the exhibition A Riot of Our Own was produced in response to an open invitation from CHELSEA Space; the critical, curatorial and auto/biographical frameworks that informed this instance of exhibition-making. As a reflective article by the co-curator and collaborator of the exhibition, the writing of this article is an opportunity to look back on how the exhibition-making process produced new forces – the need to exercise agency as a connecting thread between the impetus of experimentation, the concept of ‘the edge’ and exhibition-making as a liminal space.

The genesis for this unlikely title lay in a weekend jaunt in January 1984 undertaken by Sarah Dallin, Keren Woodward and their best pal, fanclub secretary Iand honorary fourth ‘Nana Miss Melody O’ Brien, to my mum and dad’s house in the tiny, pub-less village of East Grafton in Wiltshire. It was a curious weekend. Mrs S viewed Bananarama’s lack of skirts, lipstick or nail polish with suspicion, whilst the three girls didn’t hold much truck with all the talk of slaughtering cows and shooting pheasants. It was Keren who – perhaps with a premonition of her future life on a Cornish country estate with Wham’s Andrew Ridgley 20 years hence – appeared the most at home in the Simper country residence. A photo taken at teatime in the big sitting room shows her standing by the mantelpiece with an air of “Sure, this is my gaff, what of it?” while Sarah and Mel lark about with the family teapot. A Saturday night trip to the closest pub, The Royal Oak in Wootton Rivers, proved equally uncomfortable, with the locals proving about as welcoming as Brian Glover and Rik Mayall in An American Werewolf In London when their game of darts is interrupted.
