New Place Names Introduced in South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula by the Polish Geodynamic Expeditions, 1984-1991
POLISH POLAR RESEARCH 19 1-2 143-160 1998 Krzysztof BIRKENMAJER Institute of Geological Sciences Polish Academy of Sciences Senacka 1/3, 31-002 Kraków, POLAND New place names introduced in South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula by the Polish Geodynamic Expeditions, 1984-1991 ABSTRACT: The paper presents a catalogue, with description, detailed map location and references to first publications, of new place names introduced mainly during the Polish Geodynamic Expeditions to West Antarctica, 1984-1991. In the South Shetland Islands, new place names were introduced in parts of King George Island and Deception Island. (Some new names for Admiralty Bay, King George Island and Penguin Island, introduced prior to 1984 but not yet formally described, are also included here.) In Antarctic Peninsula, new place names have been introduced at Hope Bay (Trinity Peninsula), Arctowski Peninsula-Andvord Bay (Danco Coast/Gerlache Strait) and Paradise Harbour (Danco Coast). Key words: West Antarctica, new place names. Introduction The place names listed here have been introduced by the present author in the course of geological investigations carried out during the Polish Geodynamic Expeditions to West Antarctica, 1984-1991 (Birkenmajer 1987, 1988, 1991a). Some names, at Admiralty Bay, King George Island, and Penguin Island, which have been introduced prior to 1984 (in 1977-1978 - see Birkenmajer 1980a, b), but not formally described, are also included here. During the expeditions of 1984-1991, new place names were introduced on King George Island (at King George Bay and its vicinity) and Deception Island. On King George Island, they supplement the lists of new names published previously (Birkenmajer 1980b, 1984; Tokarski 1981; Cisak 1992). -

We could not wait: all of us were at the dock early time. Excitement was palpable! We were going on a trip to Antarctica, an impossible, unthinkable place, where the sky would hang upside down and the world was frozen. Departure was scheduled for 6 pm: the ropes were lifted from the quayside and our expedition ship moved off and headed out into the Beagle Channel to begin the long journey south. -

Draft July 2002 Letter “A” only COMPOSITE GAZETTEER OF ANTARCTICA (CGA) Draft of Volume 2, letter A only Shanghai, July 2002 1 . 2 INTRODUCTION From 1998 to 2000 At the meeting of the WG on Geodesy and Geographic Information held in Concepción, Chile, July 1998, the first edition of the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica (CGA) was presented and discussed. As a consequence of the discussion, the WG decided the upgrading of the CGA in order to include in future editions the dates of approval of names and the descriptions of the geographical features. All Member Countries were asked to send their contributions to the Italian team charged with the new task. An additional requirement, mainly addressed to those Countries that had already got the required supplementary information in their Gazetteers, was that the descriptions should be shortened in order to not exceed, on the average, 300 characters. The request was issued on 15 June 1999. At the meeting of the WG Program Leaders held in Heppenheim, Germany, July 1999, the difficulties of assembling a large amount of data in a comparatively short time appeared quite evident. It was decided, accordingly, that only the geographical names beginning with the letter "A" should be taken into consideration at the present stage. During the two year span between Concepción meeting (1998) and Tokyo meeting (2000) the work on the CGA went on along two lines: on the one side, dates of approval and descriptions were added to existing names; on the other side, new names were collected and included in the CGA, those new names coming most often complete with dates and descriptions. -

I. Arctowski Peninsula ABSTRACT: The rocks exposed along the western coast of Arctowski Peninsula and on offshore islands, Danco Coast (West Antarctica), represent the following lithostratigraphic units: the Trinity Peninsula Group metasediments (?Permian-Triassic); the Antarctic Peninsula Volcanic Group lavas, agglomerates and tuffs (Lower Cretaceous); the Andean Intrusive Suite, including adamellite, granite, granodiorite, diorite, tonalite and gabbro plutons (mid-Cretace ous), moreover basic and acid hypabyssal dykes (?Upper Cretaceous). The relationships between these rock-units are shown in geological map and sketches of field exposures. Key words: West Antarctica, magmatic arc, Mesozoic. Introduction The present paper details geological observations made along the west coast of Arctowski Peninsula, Danco Coast (Antarctic Peninsula), from Orne Harbour in the north to Andvord Bay in the south, and on offshore islands (Figs 1 — 3). The field work was carried out by the present author during the 3rd Polish Geodynamic Expedition to West Antarctica 1987 — 88), organized by the Polish Academy of Sciences and led by Professor A. Guterch (Birkenmajer 1988). The following rock-units have been distinguished: the Trinity Peninsula Group metasediments, TPG (?Permian-Triasic); the Antarctic Peninsula Vol canic Group, APVG (Lower Cretaceous); the Andean Intrusive Suite, including adamellite, granite, granodiorite, diorite, tonalite and gabbro plutons, AIS-1 (mid-Cretaceous), moreover basic and acid hypabyssal dykes, AIS-2 (?Upper Cretaceous). 48 Krzysztof Birkenmajer Fig. 1.
