Songwriting Tips for the Church Dan & Lauren Smith
Songwriting Tips for the Church Dan & Lauren Smith Songs Will Flow from Time Spent with God This is first because it’s the most important. If we truly believe in the living God who speaks and inspires us through His word, then we must also spend time with Him and let our songwriting flow from His presence. Songs written and meant for the church to sing as praise and worship will flow out of our own personal times with the Lord. Make Him first and songwriting second. Ask God, “Lord, what is it you want your church to say to you or hear from you?” It’s out of these questions that we can best receive God’s direction in our songwriting, and what He wants to say to or what He wants to hear from our church family in our worship of Him. Leave Your Ego at the Door This is also extremely important. Songwriting as a collaborative experience requires humility - there is no space for the ego. You have to be willing to take criticism and respect opinions. Sometimes what you internally think makes lyrical sense does not work for the listener or could be said in a much more poignant way. The same is true musically. Keep an open heart and open mind when collaborating on music together. Be willing to admit or believe that you’re wrong or someone else’s idea is better. In worship, it’s not your song, it’s God’s. You are a team working to craft a message from Him - think of it as a discovery process you are all on together. -

Underwood* When Professor Levine invited me to participate in the 2011 Bob Dylan and the Law Symposium,1 I was – bemused. Still, I felt that I was compelled to go. I had a good time in the big city, and was surprised by the number of high-powered presenters in attendance. The Symposium produced some interesting articles. I must admit that I struggled to find anything to say about “Bob Dylan and the Law.” I was a Dylan fan in the very early sixties when he was doing folk music;2 but I went into the Army at age twenty and did not return to “The World” until the early seventies, when I entered law school. -
I Just Clicked to Say I Love You: Rich Evaluations of Minimal
I Just Clicked To Say I Love You: Rich Evaluations of Minimal Communication Joseph 'Jofish' Kaye Cornell University Information Science Culturally Embedded Computing Group 301 College Ave, Ithaca NY 14850, USA jofish at cornell.edu ABSTRACT MINIOs: Tools for Minimal Communication In this paper, I present the results of a study of “Minimal “Minimal Intimate Objects” or MinIOs are low bandwidth Intimate Objects” or MinIOs: low bandwidth devices for devices for couples to communicate intimacy. These communicating intimacy for couples in long-distance MinIOs are designed to be used in pairs, one for each relationships. MinIOs were designed to explore the member of a couple. We designed and implemented two possibility of expressing something as rich as intimacy over a different versions of the MinIOs. Our first design was the low bandwidth connection. I wanted to build devices that PIO, or Physical Intimate Object, based on a Rabbit would enable both designers and users to reflect on the Semiconductor RCM 3710 board in an Altoids box with a relationship, the technology, and the role of the technology in large LED and a button, shown in Figure 1. mediating the relationship. Users constructed a complex, dynamically changing understanding of the meaning of each interaction, based on an understanding of their and their partner’s context of use. I suggest that the minimal nature of the device allowed for rich and complex interpretations of an otherwise simple communication, and that this model may be useful for understanding other forms of simple computing. France Bans the Veil: What French Republicanism Has to Say About It
6. MECHOULAN - SUMMER 2017 - BU ILJ.DOCX (DO NOT DELETE) 5/1/17 12:24 PM FRANCE BANS THE VEIL: WHAT FRENCH REPUBLICANISM HAS TO SAY ABOUT IT Stéphane Mechoulan∗ ABSTRACT In 2010, France banned the wearing of face-veils in public. This criminalization of face covering was criticized by the U.S. State Department, prominent non-governmental organizations (“NGOs”), and legal academics of the Anglo-liberal tradition as a violation of freedom of religion and expression. Against this backdrop, the European Court of Human Rights’ 2014 decision to uphold the ban provides a timely opportunity to better understand the French republican rationale behind it. Through reconsidering the competing conceptions of the common good produced by Anglo-liberalism and French republicanism this article explores how the ban aims to preserve an organizing principle of the Rousseauist social contract. Specifically, it investigates the legal concept of “immaterial public order” which operationalizes the political and philosophical foundations of that principle. Teasing out how French republican values mesh with French identity, this article exposes the political threat that the practice of hiding one’s face triggers, while questioning how far those values and cultural identity concerns may go in curbing fundamental freedoms. Ultimately, as a friction point between competing rights, the face-veil ban invites commentators to analyze the political and historical tenets of human rights ideology and investigate whether their purported universality can accommodate substantive variations in their implementation. This inquiry is all the more relevant as Western countries, now pluralist and secular, struggle to integrate an increasing number of individuals of foreign cultural and religious backgrounds. -

Message in the Music: Do Lyrics Influence ell-Being?W Abstract Music has long been an effective way to communicate to the masses, and lyrics have played a massive role in delivering this communication. Yet the opportunity for research on the role lyrics play in well-being is vastly underutilized. This paper is an exploration of the relationship between lyrics and positive psychology. I will discuss a brief origin of lyrics, examine the body of literature on lyrics as well as its gaps, and finally suggest potential application of lyrics ot increasing various aspects of well-being. We are only beginning to have the language to discuss the positive and negative effects of lyrics. The results of this exploration indicate that lyrics have the potential to increase two of the five elements of well-being in the PERMA model, positive emotions and meaning. It is suggested that you can increase well-being by mindfully listening to meaning-filled lyrics bolstered by music’s ability to influence emotion. -

PJ Morton - Say So Ft
Song Exploder PJ Morton - Say So ft. Jojo Episode 202 Hrishikesh: You’re listening to Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs and piece by piece tell the story of how they were made. My name is Hrishikesh Hirway. (“Say So” by PJ MORTON ft. JOJO) Hrishikesh: PJ Morton is a singer, songwriter, and producer. He’s been nominated for 10 Grammys, including Best R&B album three years in a row. In 2020, he won the Grammy for the Best R&B song for his track, “Say So,” which is a duet with the singer JoJo, a platinum-selling artist in her own right. But that version of “Say So” almost didn’t come to exist. In this episode, PJ takes us through his original voice memos, the demos, and the isolated pieces of the final studio recording, as he tells the story of how “Say So” was created, then disappeared, and then got re-created, and ended up becoming one of his biggest songs. (“Say So” by PJ MORTON ft. JOJO) PJ: My name is PJ Morton. Hrishikesh: “Say So” came out in 2019, but PJ had his first idea for it on February 14th 2015. (Music fades out) PJ: Valentine’s day. I had a really bad writer’s block. Maybe one of the worst of my life. Well I should say, usually my form of writer’s block is I can’t write a song for myself. Sometimes, I can still, as a songwriter, write for other artists. But when I say writer’s block, I mean I can’t get my own thoughts out. -
A Contextual Meaning Analysis of One Republic's
A CONTEXTUAL MEANING ANALYSIS OF ONE REPUBLIC’S SONGS LYRIC COUNTING STARS AND APOLOGIZE A GRADUATING PAPER Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Gaining the Bachelor Degree in English Literature By: Arif Bahtiar 14150046 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT FACULTY OF ADAB AND CULTURAL SCIENCES STATE ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA 2018 ii iii iv ABSTRACT A CONTEXTUAL MEANING ANALYSIS OF ONE REPUBLIC’S SONG LYRIC COUNTIG STARS AND APOLOGIZE Meaning is an abstract thought in human mind. In an utterance, the understanding really depends on the level of someone’s knowledge to the language. In linguistics, the study focusing on meaning is called semantics. The meaning of an utterance or literary work not only can be understood by lexical meaning, but also context determines the meaning. In this case, meaning which is constructed by context of another sentence is called contextual meaning. There are so many literary works which only can be understood by its contexts. One of them is song lyric. Song is one of the most famous literary work lately. However, some song lyrics use various diction whose meaning is difficult to be understood. Counting Stars and Apologize are two songs that have various diction, and the meaning only can be understood by their contexts. That is why, this research aims to discover the contextual meaning of those two songs through contextual meaning theory of Pateda. The result of the research shows that there are twenty six lyrics which stand from word, phrase, and sentence having contextual meaning of those two songs. Seventeen of the found data belong to Counting stars song lyric and nine data belong to Apologize song lyric.
