08 FIBAAMERICAS.COM SPECIAL ISSUE 08 Feature Prigioni, key in argentinean reaction Argentina missed guard Pablo Prigioni in the II Marchand Continental Championship Cup as he was negotiating a deal with real Madrid. After signing the deal, Prigioni reported to the Argentinean team for the FIBA Americas Championship but despite that they had two straight 2009 FIBA-Americas Championship September 2, 2009 losses, but many adjustments have given them three straight wins. The guard has averages of 11 points and 6.8 assists in five games, where they have won three. In the first win Prigioni led the Argentineans with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. "We turned the situation because with two losses it looked that we were in bad shape and we wouldn't qualify. With these wins we have a foot in Turkey," said Prigioni who will be in Real Madrid for the next two ACB seasons with an option for a third year. In their wins Argentina had a better offensive performance by Paolo Quinteros, Federico Kammerichs, Andrés Pelussi, Leo Gutiérrez and Prigioni who have helped Luis Scola who ended as the MVP of the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship. "We are now playing as a team, it is shown in the results, the game, everything. This is not something new," said Prigioni. "It is very important this change in our game that gives us a guarantee in the games that follow," he added. About his expectations with a new team in the ACB, the player is happy for signing with Real Madrid which historically has been one of the main teams in Spain.

BAYESIAN ANALYSIS OF DYADIC DATA ARISING IN BASKETBALL by Xin Lucy Liu B.Sc., Shenyang University, 1996 a project submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science c Xin Lucy Liu SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY Spring 2007 All rights reserved. This work may not be reproduced in whole or in part, by photocopy or other means, without the permission of the author. APPROVAL Name: Xin Lucy Liu Degree: Master of Science Title of project: Bayesian Analysis of Dyadic Data Arising in Basketball Examining Committee: Dr. Richard Lockhart Chair Dr. Tim Swartz Senior Supervisor Simon Fraser University Dr. Paramjit Gill Co-Supervisor Simon Fraser University Dr. Tom Loughin External Examiner Date Approved: ii Abstract The goal of this project is to use statistical methods to identify players and combinations of players which affect a basketball team’s performance. The traditional statistics which are recorded tell us only about the contribution of individual players (eg. points scored, rebounds, etc). However, there are subtle aspects of play such as defensive help, setting screens and verbal communication that are known to be important but are not routinely recorded. The model we propose is based on the Bayesian social relations model. The results help us identify aspects of player performance. Data from the NBA 2004 and NBA 2005 finals are used throughout the project to illustrate our approach. Keywords: Bayesian social relations model, Dyadic data, WinBUGS iii Dedication In memory of my father, Zhong-Xuan Liu (1946-1994) iv Acknowledgements I would like to thank the people who have helped me go through this difficult, challenging yet exciting time of my life.

• Final Round Confidential Facts for the Boston Celtics
CONFIDENTIAL FACTS FOR THE BOSTON CELTICS The Celtics have been considered a top-tier NBA team for nearly a decade. Because of the attention the team receives and fan expectations, ownership must continually put a winning product on the floor, which costs a substantial amount of money. Fans have been frustrated recently because some of the Celtics’ stars are getting older and becoming more injury prone. In fact, during the first half of the 2010-11 NBA season, the Celtics lost Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Rajon Rondo for significant periods of time due to injury. This caused some uneasiness in Boston and questions arose as to how the Celtics would be able to continue to win if their highest paid players were routinely missing games because of injury. The Celtics recently held a meeting with their entire scouting department and trusted advisors. The Celtics believe Rondo is one of the top five NBA point guards and he is only getting better. He has had some minor injury issues with his right ankle that has bothered him on and off again since his first year of college, but he has played in 90% of the Celtics’ games over the course of his young career. The scouting meeting also discussed possibilities that may be available in a trade involving Rondo. The New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs have held preliminary talks with Boston Celtics Director of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge, the Celtics’ General Manager, Assistant General Manager, and General Counsel. These talks have only been preliminary and the meeting resulted in a consensus that the Nuggets are the best option for the Celtics to trade Rondo.
