Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei Archivio di Paola Zancani Montuoro Inventario a cura di Paola Cagiano de Azevedo Roma 2015 2 Biografia Paola Zancani Montuoro nacque a Napoli il 27 febbraio del 1901 in una famiglia colta e benestante. Suo padre, Raffaele Montuoro, era un avvocato e brillante giornalista (redattore capo del «Pungolo»1) e sua madre, Clotilde Arlotta, proveniva da una facoltosa famiglia che annoverava tra i suoi membri: banchieri, industriali e uomini politici. Frequentò assiduamente la Napoli dei circoli colti di Benedetto Croce, la cui casa, soprattutto durante il fascismo, divenne punto di incontro di spiriti liberi continuamente alla ricerca di nuovi stimoli per ampliare gli orizzonti culturali. Questo ambiente ricco di fermenti intellettuali indirizzarono Paola Montuoro verso gli studi classici; si iscrisse all'Università di Napoli dove, tra gli insegnanti che ebbero un ruolo nella sua formazione, vanno ricordati gli illustri archeologi Antonio Sogliano e Giulio Emanuele Rizzo. Si laureò nel 1923 con una tesi su L’origine della decorazione frontonale nei templi greci. Dopo aver sposato un collega, Domenico Zancani, partì nel 1927 per Atene insieme a Margherita Guarducci, per frequentare la prestigiosa Scuola archeologica italiana di Atene. La morte del marito a pochi mesi dal matrimonio, allontanò Paola Montuoro dai suoi studi e dai suoi interessi; solo grazie alla collaborazione con la Società Magna Grecia, dopo un lungo periodo trascorso nel lutto, riesce a recuperare quella che era la passione di sempre dedicandosi, con molte difficoltà, allo studio e all’attività di ricerca, buona parte della quale dedicata alla prosecuzione del lavoro iniziato dal marito sui Pinakes di Locri. -

Examplesof ArchaicAkhaian pottery in theWest are assembled and the dis- tributionis comparedto thatof Akhaianand West Greek imports in the Late BronzeAge. A patternemerges that suggests a complexreality of interaction andmovement of people,commodities, and ideas between Greece and Italy in the pre- and protohistoricperiods, thus contributingto a betterunder- standingof the firstwestern Greeks. AIMSAND SCOPE OF THE STUDY Thispaper emerged from a studyof thepottery from the site at Francavilla Marittima,the extramuralsanctuary of theAkhaian apoikia of Sybarison the siteof an earlierindigenous settlement (Fig. 1).1 In dealingwith the potteryfrom the sanctuaryon the Timponedella Motta (see below),I discovereda largenumber of plainbanded and monochrome kantharoi, manyof whichwere locally produced, either in the plainof Sybarisor elsewherein SouthItaly, while others were imported. These are not iso- latedexamples, but together form one of themost numerous categories of potteryafter Corinthian. In shapeand style, these kantharoi are closest to a seriesof vesselsfrom various sites in the northwestPeloponnese, par- ticularlyAkhaia. Despite the factthat Sybaris was traditionally founded by Akhaians,the Peloponnesiancharacter of thismaterial has not previ- ouslybeen recognized in studiesof Greekpottery in SouthItaly and Sic- ily.The relevantmaterial from Francavilla will be fullypublished else- where.Comparative material from other sites in SouthItaly and Sicily formsthe basisof this article,the aimof whichis to track,as faras is 1. -

1 Paola Zancani Montuoro (1901 - 1987) by Licia Vlad Borrelli Before the unification of Italy, Naples had been the great capital of a kingdom and, up to the end of the nineteenth-century, it was considered the second most important city in Europe after Paris. The signs of this ancient prestige were still visible in the first decades of this century. A pleasure-seeking aristocracy occupied its splendid palaces with Spanish-like splendour, while an enlightened bourgeoisie produced an independent culture and established relationships with the most advanced intellectual movements north of the Alps. Benedetto Croce united the tradition of a Neapolitan philosophical school that was open to the lesson of Hegel with his “philosophy of the spirit.” Generations of young scholars would nourish themselves from his teachings and his home would become a meeting place for free spirits during the Fascist era. At the same time, brilliant journalists endowed with strong and assertive personalities like Eduardo Scarfoglio and Matilde Serao, founded newspapers, fought political battles, and highlighted the vices and virtues of city life. The painters of the school of Posillipo, poets like Salvatore di Giacomo, and actors like Eduardo Scarpetta and later the De Filippo brothers, depicted the images of a Neapolitan reality that would soon be canceled by urban demolition programs and the ravages of war, or would be weakened by the transformation of Italy at the hands of the Piedmontese and by the subsequent homologation of customs. This was the ambience, full of lively cultural ferment, into which Paola Zancani Montuoro was born in Naples on February 27, 1901. -
