Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson ONE Case Study Lightware Visual Engineering 1 Peterdy 15, Budapest H-1071, Hungary +36 1 255 3800 [email protected] www.lightware.com Cirque du Soleil – Michael Jackson ONE Market Country Rental & Staging USA Lightware Equipment Used in Project 1 - Lightware MX-FR65R frame 41 - Lightware fiber receivers 3 - Lightware fiber transmitters “I’m a perfectionist; it’s part of who I am,” Michael Jackson is purported to have said. Given the quality of his work and his reputation for high standards, the expectations for a show revolving around Michael Jackson will always be exceedingly high. Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE, produced in conjunction with Jackson’s estate, aspires to meet the level of perfection the star would demand. The show, which combines Jackson’s music with Cirque’s distinctive acrobatic feats, is at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas in a space that was formerly occupied by a production of The Lion King; it was completely renovated specifically for MJ ONE. CDS anchored a team that included Auerbach Pollock Friedlander, Moser Architecture Studio, and Jaffe Holden Acoustics for the design and specification of the rigging and automation, lighting control, and audio-video systems. The show’s story line was written by choreographer Jamie King, who danced in Michael Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous World Tour. The musical director, Kevin Antunes (New Kids on the Block, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, Britney Spears, ‘N Sync, Justin Timberlake), made his selections from “Michael’s entire treasure vault” and remixed it specifically for the show. -

Lineage Curated by Julia Bullock Soundbox
LINEAGE CURATED BY JULIA BULLOCK SOUNDBOX 1 julia bullock on lineage “I’ve found that musicians often share a lot about the various influences in their lives— whether they be historical, political, philosophical, personal, or based on other mediums of art. They let diverse influences not only impact their work, but find ways to let them register explicitly. It’s like musicians are hyper conscious of their lineage—they honor it and value it. So, as I continue to follow along the path and legacy of artists that came before me, lineage has become increasingly important—it’s a part of knowing from where I originated and letting that inform where I envision myself going. The musicians on this SoundBox program could not make music all together in one place, or even at one time, but the very nature of this program—which links material that spans across almost 900 years—captures an audio and visual snapshot of how lineage can inform, influence, impact, and express itself in a musical context.” 2 Esa-Pekka Salonen SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY MUSIC DIRECTOR San Francisco Symphony Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen has, through his many high-profile conducting roles and work as a leading composer, shaped a unique vision for the present and future of the contemporary symphony orchestra. Salonen is currently the Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor for London’s Philharmonia Orchestra and is Artist in Association at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet. He is a member of the faculty of the Colburn School in Los Angeles, where he developed and directs the pre-professional Negaunee Conducting Program. -

Situated in the cor- ner was a five-meter pole, on which Chinese acrobats where Iclimbing up and down and up and down, ad infinitum. But this was all in a day’s work for the acrobats in ZAIA’s “Globes and Poles” act, in which eight acrobats in costumes of fluorescent armor stand on large silver balls holding poles upon which the remaining acro- bats jump and catch themselves by their legs, with an enchanting mastery of gravity that has become synonymous with a Cirque du Soleil show. Given the $150 million and three years of preparation on ZAIA, I have to say it has been money and time well spent. It’s a show that successfully transports you into its dream realm from the moment you walk through the hall into the theater, which is designed to re- semble a telescope aimed at the cosmos. With the stage as a focal point, set up like a precisely orchestrated master shot, the show extends beyond the stage and into, as well as above, the audience, as dancers frozen in blocks of ice and upside-down cyclists move gracefully toward the stage from the periphery. -

The study focuses most closely on the years 1993 – 2012 and the shows that Cirque has produced in Las Vegas. Driven by Las Vegas’s culture of spectacle, Cirque uses elaborate stage technology to support the wordless acrobatics for which it is renowned. By so doing, the company has raised the bar for spectacular entertainment in Las Vegas I explore the beginning of Cirque du Soleil in Québec and the development of its world-tours. -
Final Degree Dissertation
UNIVERSIDAD PONTIFICIA COMILLAS Facultad de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations Final Degree Dissertation A LOCATION ANALYSIS FOR CIRQUE DU SOLEIL’S ESTABLISHMENT OF RESIDENT SHOWS Student: María Domínguez Pérez Supervisor: Santiago Urío Rodríguez Madrid, April 2018 “They can do anything, from a permanent location on Broadway, to a traveling show that pops into towns for two to three weeks, to a show that just appears for a day on a football field. That is easy to say and very hard to execute” - Dawn Hudson (cited in Rastello, 2017) - ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First of all, I would like to thank Santiago Urío for his constant support and guidance, not only throughout the elaboration of this dissertation, but also during the past couple of years. Through his lessons and expertise, I have been able to discover my passion for International Strategy and Business Management, which I hope to develop further during my professional career. In addition, a special thanks to Jesús Méndez for always lending an ear and for encouraging me to strive for excellence and pursue my dreams of working for a major entertainment firm such as Cirque du Soleil. Finally, to my family for their words of encouragement and unconditional support. Thank you for helping me find my way out of the most stressful moments during the year. Abstract With the development of the international business field, the study of location gained importance. It began to distinguish between firms that initiated their internationalisation process to reduce production costs and those that did it in order to access new markets. -

But following a bleak outlook report from a consultant, a spate of poorly received shows and a decline in profits, executives at Cirque say they are now restructuring and refocusing their business—shifting some of the attention away from clowns and acrobats, towards other business ventures.
