We shake Cantor Emeritus the lulav and etrog in all four directions, up and down. This is an ancient ritual, Baruch Blum in which we thank God for rain and all of the blessings it brings, and ask God President for appropriate rainfall in the new year. In order to shake the Four Species, we Rita Shumsky must bring them all together, so that they are touching: the lulav (palm branch), Vice President, Ritual David Volpe the hadass (myrtle), the aravah (willow), and the etrog. Why do they have to be Vice President, Fundraising brought together? One answer is that they each represent a different type of per- Steve Castar son in the community. According to this teaching, taste represents learning, and Vice President, Administration smell represents good deeds. The etrog has both taste and smell.
