Some years, Purim seems like a silly holiday…with costumes, skits and graggers contending for our attention. This year it feels like welcome relief from news that is endlessly challenging to our equilibrium.

Purim itself is a strange event on the Jewish calendar. First, it is based on the only book of the of which not a scrap has been found in the Dead Sea Scrolls, to date. Second, it does not mention God at all. Third, its story has no relationship to real persons or events known from Persian history, despite the fact that the story is set in the Persian court. The distinguished Bible scholar Robert Alter finds many indications in the narrative that the whole thing was written for entertain- ment purposes. He says it has been described as “a farce, a burlesque, a satire, a fairy tale and a carnivalesque narrative…with sly sexual comedy playing a significant role”.

The names of the two prominent , Esther and Mordechai, are reminiscent of names of the Per- sian deities, Ishtar and Marduk (little known fact: Esther’s was Hadass).

Jewish tradition tells us that we are supposed to celebrate Purim so enthusiastically that we cannot distinguish between Haman and Mordechai….that would require a lot of Manischewitz!

If the story cannot be pinned to historical events, then the timing of the celebration, coming close to Mardi Gras many years, seems fortuitous. For Roman Catholics, Mardi Gras is the blowing off of steam before the somber and serious period of Lent begins, while for Jews, Purim comes at the end (we hope) of winter, letting us shed the burdens of the long, bleak winter in anticipation of the joys of spring and summer.

All the other occasions on our calendar have serious rituals associated with them. Pesakh is loaded with such rituals; Chanukah has the candle lighting; has …the ; Rosh HaShanah has the blowing of the shofar; has fasting and repenting of sins. But Purim has no serious bone in its body.

Some Jewish adults think Purim is a kids’ holiday, because we have made it so. But it really is an adult occasion (see paragraphs 2 and 4, above!). And we at Beth Israel do it up right. This year we will have a pantomime of the Purim story, to be followed by a tasting of wines that are kosher- for-Pesakh, and we’ll have genuine, home-made (by Sandy and Sam Zians) hamantashen (and other wine-compatible nibblies).

So come to the Purim shpiel on Sunday, March 12 at 7:30 pm…get into the spirit of silly, and wear a costume! And enjoy this very unusual Jewish holiday…it only comes round once every year!

2 President’s Message

Joanne Sudman As a teenager, one of the most poignant moments of my life, at the time, was the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. It was his moving acceptance speech with the now famous line: “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” This philosophy is true to every as- pect of our lives including what we do at Beth Israel. I know what our congregation gives many of you: family, spirituality, friendship, caring, education, laughter, love. The big question is what can you do for Beth Israel? There are many ways to give back… sponsor an oneg, take an honor for services, join the group of men and women who visit those who are sick, volunteer to help at one of our great programs or fundraisers, for example. Today we need you to volunteer to take over the Communication Directors responsibilities that were laid out in the last Shalom News. Volunteers are also needed to join the Facilities and Maintenance Committee which maintains the integrity of our building. Now is the time to think about giving back to Beth Israel, your home away from home. Please call me if you have any interest in filling these positions (513-519 -6897). Some important events are taking place in April that you will want to attend so please mark your calendars for the Yom Hashoa service on Monday night, April 24 at 7 PM. I will announce where we will have the service in next month’s Shalom News. The Faith Community along with the Charitable Foundation of SCC will once again support the local food pantries with an afternoon of Cabaret on Sunday, April 30 at 2 PM in the Community Hall. Tickets will be available in March. Cantor Glenn and Micki will be part of this program. Heart to heart, Joanne

In honor of heart month, February 7th, Beth Israel Sisterhood had a program for members and the public to listen to a talk about vitamin supplements, natural remedies and food-drug interactions. It was given by Sujith Idiculla, the pharmacy manager of the Sun City Center Walgreens. 75 people attended and all enjoyed this great learning experience.

Led by Barb Nova and Rochelle Lafer, Beth Israel’s annual Rummage Sale, held on February 14th, was a great success. Beautiful merchandise, hard workers, good listeners and wonderful cooperation all contrib- uted to an event that was, as Barb Nova said “well above anything I have ever experienced”.

March 24th and 25th Paul Storfer and Friends Are bringing their music to share with us And to honor Kathy’s memory of music and faith

On March 24 and 25, Paul Storfer and some musical friends will be participating in our services....he has not been back since his wife Kathy died in November 2015. This time he will again be accompanied by David (the lit- tle drummer boy) Kane and his wife Carrie, and by Bar- bara Orwick, the pianist who accompanied and sang with the choir that Kathy led. The music will be wonder- ful...and a touch sad, of course.

Paul feels strongly that this congregation has a place in his heart, as it did for Kathy...and we have a place for them, of course, in our hearts. let's do our best to "make a joyful noise unto Adonai"...as the Psalms say!

Sisterhood President

On March 7th Beth Israel Sisterhood will be on the road for a very special trip. We head south to Sarasota to visit Marie Selby Gardens and see a very unique exhibit entitled, “Marc Chagall, Flowers and the French Riviera: The Color of Dreams.” This is the first exhibit to pair paintings in a botanical garden setting. It looks at the role of flowers and nature in Chagall’s work. The highlight of the exhibit is the 1937 painting “The Lovers,” on loan from the Israel Museum. It is on display in the Christy Payne Man- sion. The cost for admission and the guided tour is $25. Make checks payable to Beth Israel Sisterhood and contact Erica Leino as soon as possible if you would like to join us ([email protected]) or call 419-4358). Space on the tour is limited. We will carpool from the Temple at 9:30am. Lunch will be available at the Selby House Café by Michael’s On East. Lunch selections average $10 or less and are at your own cost.

Our always popular Women’s Seder will be held on Tuesday, April 4th and we finish our program sea- son with the Installation of Officers and Closing Brunch on Tuesday, May 2nd. More information will follow on these events soon, but mark your calendar so you don’t miss them! May we go from strength to strength.

11 Men’s Club Jeff Beller I’ve been President of the Beth Israel Men’s Club for a little over two months now & must tell you what a pleasure it’s been to work with such a great Board and to meet for the first time so many of our membership.

January saw our annual Men’s Club Shabbat Service & Oneg. Thanks to Rabbi Carla, Harvey Berman & Sam Zians everything went off well. Later on that month our Membership Meeting featured Ira Kaufman, Radio broadcaster, Times columnist & voting member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. An excellent speaker, great pizza & a lot of camaraderie!

February was a busy month for us. Early on we had a successful Super Bowl Party at the Temple & a Day at the Races at Tampa Bay Downs. All who attended had a really good time. Thanks go out to Gil Daniels for setting up these two events. February’s Membership Meeting featured the showing of “The Very Funny World of Alan King” on VHS. Not an easy thing to find & hook up a VCR these days!! Dick Marshall & Bernie Katz did a great job in getting & setting up the equipment for us to use. Thanks, guys, I couldn’t have done this by myself! The Bagels & Discovery for February featured a representative from Hillsborough County’s Office of Emergency Management. Very interesting speaker on a varied range of subjects.

I really appreciate all of the men who work behind the scenes in getting speakers & preparing for our meetings & our Bagels & Discovery.

Thanks, too, to Alan & Ilene Freidel for donating to the Men’s Club an Epson Digital Projector & portable screen for the Men’s Club & Temple’s future use.

On March 22nd our Membership Meeting will feature a representative from Politifact, the Pulitzer Prize-winning news fact-checking website operated by the Tampa Bay Times, & we’ll be opening this up to all Temple members. It should be a very interesting program considering the political times we live in. Following that, on March 29th, will be our an- nual Ameriprise luncheon, this year at the Plaza Club in Freedom Park. Shalom!

Delyse Axinn is our chaplain and the organizer of our Misheberach List. If you know of a congregant, family member, or friend that you want on the list you need to email or call Delyse by Friday at 4 PM. Only those names that are sent to her or phoned in will be added to the list that is read on Shabbat. Please email Delyse at [email protected]

12 ASK THE RABBI

QUESTION : Please explain about the prayer for the sick that is part of the Torah service each week: who should we pray for; the difference between using the Hebrew name and the English name; how is the Hebrew name said?

ANSWER : The prayer for the sick is one of many prayers in Jewish tradition that begins with the words Mi Shebeyrakh , “may the One who blessed our ancestors…”. It is said while the Torah is out of the ark, just after the reading is done, in the belief…superstition?...that such prayers will be more effective if read in the presence of the scroll. Some communities say that the scroll should be covered for this prayer, while others say that it should be open.

Our tradition teaches that we should not pray for miracles (meaning: things that are outside the regular laws of nature or science). So it is inappropriate to pray for a miraculous recovery on behalf of someone terminally ill. But we can pray for that person’s release from pain and suffering; we can pray for the family of that person, that they have the strength to accompany this patient on his/her final journey; and we can pray for the caregivers, in the hope that their attention to this patient will be gentle and kind.

We can certainly pray for people experiencing an illness or condition for which treatment is known and is perhaps un- derway. And we can pray for those who suffer chronic conditions, in the hope that they may experience relief from their symptoms, and that medical science will discover a successful treatment for them.

We can pray for people whose suffering is either mental or physical. We can pray for the young or for the old. We can pray for Jews and non-Jews.

If you know the Hebrew name of a Jew, you are welcome to use that, either in putting the name on the list or in saying the name aloud when you are present. On the understanding that mothers are more closely connected to the health of their children than fathers (from a sexist worldview of long ago), the traditional way to say the Hebrew name is to say the person’s name, as son or daughter of…the mother. In our gender-equity sensitive times, you will often hear the name with both father’s and mother’s names mentioned.

Some people ask us only to use their Hebrew names to protect their privacy. Since it is our understanding that God knows all languages, it doesn’t matter which language you use to pray for someone’s health.

And don’t forget the postcards you can send to people to let them know that you have thought of them when we pray for the sick; people really appreciate receiving these cards, which are on the name-tag table in the foyer.

To put a name on the list, please contact Delyse Axinn at [email protected] . The list is updated every Friday. And please remember to remove a name from the list when appropriate.

Yes, our lists are long. But at our stage in life, that is to be expected. And we will continue to use two minutes of our Shabbat service to pray for the sick, because in reality, there is not much more most of us can do for the people we know who are ill.

Prayer brings comfort…to the person who prays and the one for whom we pray.

It’s really that simple.
