Phylogenetic Analysis of <I>Myobia Musculi</I>
Comparative Medicine Vol 61, No 6 Copyright 2011 December 2011 by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science Pages 484–491 Original Research Phylogenetic Analysis of Myobia musculi (Schranck, 1781) by Using the 18S Small Ribosomal Subunit Sequence Sanford H Feldman* and Abraham M Ntenda We used high-fidelity PCR to amplify 2 overlapping regions of the ribosomal gene complex from the rodent fur mite Myobia musculi. The amplicons encompassed a large portion of the mite’s ribosomal gene complex spanning 3128 nucleotides containing the entire 18S rRNA, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1, 5.8S rRNA, ITS2, and a portion of the 5′-end of the 28S rRNA. M. musculi’s 179-nucleotide 5.8S rRNA nucleotide sequence was not conserved, so this region was identified by conservation of rRNA second- ary structure. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference phylogenetic analyses were performed by using multiple sequence alignment consisting of 1524 nucleotides of M. musculi 18S rRNA and homologous sequences from 42 prostigmatid mites and the tick Dermacentor andersoni. The phylograms produced by both methods were in agreement regarding terminal, secondary, and some tertiary phylogenetic relationships among mites. Bayesian inference discriminated most infraordinal relationships between Eleutherengona and Parasitengona mites in the suborder Anystina. Basal relationships between suborders Anystina and Eupodina historically determined by comparing differences in anatomic characteristics were less well-supported by our molecular analysis. Our results recapitulated similar 18S rRNA sequence analyses recently reported. Our study supports M. musculi as belonging to the suborder Anystina, infraorder Eleutherenona, and superfamily Cheyletoidea. Abbreviation: ITS, internal transcribed spacer. Mites and ticks comprise the subclass Acari in the class Arach- Myobia musculi (Schranck, 1781; Trombidiformes: Myobiidae) nida. -

Arthropod Ectoparasites of Rattus Norvegicus in Four Governorates in Egypt and the Effect of Host Location, Sex and Age on Their Prevalence

Nematology Dep., Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University **Entomology and Pesticides Dep., Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University ABSTRACT A total of 83 Norway rat hosts were captured from four governorates using live traps and examined for their arthropod ectoparasites. 77.2% of Rattus norvegicus were infested with at least one ectoparasite. Results revealed that 938 ectoparasites, comprising:140 (14.93%) fleas, 234 (24.95%) lice and 564 (60.1%) mites, are belong to 4 orders, 7 families, 9 genera and 9 species. The 9 species of ectoparasites recorded included three fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis, Echidnophaga gallinacean and Ctenocephalides felis), two sucking lice (Hoplopleura oenomydis and Polyplax spinulosa) and four mites (Ornithonussus bacoti, Lealaps nuttalli, Liponyssoides sanguineus and Radfordia ensifera). Location is a key factor affects the Infection prevalence and general indices of ectoparasite since location alteration involves many criteria like geographical situation, ecological condition, rodent predators, seasonal activities, human practices and sources of infection that influence the ectoparasite prevalence and indices. No host sex-associated differences in the prevalence of infection were found for ectoparasites but host age may affect the foraging choices for them. Secondary bacterial infections and mortality can occur in severe mite infestations, notably during infestation with S. scabiei and other members of the Sarcoptidae. Sarcoptic mange is also a concern in threatened or fragmented wildlife populations; some populations have experienced severe declines in their numbers after these mites were introduced. Avian mites such as Ornithonyssus sylviarum, Orn, bursa, Dermanyssus gallinae, Knemidokoptes spp. and Sternostoma tracheacolum can cause disease in poultry or pet birds. Mites also affect laboratory and pet rodents, rabbits, exotic animals and reptiles. Humans occasionally become infested with zoonotic mites, which can cause discomfort and dermatitis. A few species can transmit diseases, such as human vesicular rickettsiosis. Mites from animals do not usually survive for very long on humans, and most zoonotic infestations are self-limiting. Etiology Acariasis in animals is caused by a variety of mites (class Arachnida, subclass Acari). Due to the great number and ecological diversity of the Acari, as well as the lack of fossil records, the higher level classification of these organisms is still in flux.
