Title: Ecclesfield, Yorkshire Shelfmark: C908/10 Description: The unidentified speaker refers briefly to his milk round in Chapeltown and then shares with a friend his knowledge of the terrible flood that swept through Sheffield one hundred years earlier, and which is featured in a commemorative issue of the local paper. There is some interference to sound quality due to the recording having taken place outdoors. Chapeltown is a town to the north of Ecclesfield. Barnsley (further to the north), Rotherham (east) and Doncaster (northeast) are all large towns in the area. Shire Green is to the south and within the boundary of Sheffield, the major city of which Ecclesfield is now a suburb. Grenoside, Oughtibridge, Ewden and Bradfield are all villages and Derwent, Damflask and Dale Dike are three of the many reservoirs in the hills to the west of Ecclesfield. Malinbridge is an area on the northwestern edge of Sheffield. The Sheffield Star is a local daily newspaper. Woodland & Trees Headlines • Using our standard methods, 14.8% or 5,454ha of Sheffield is classed as woodland. Data gathered during the recent iTree project suggest even greater coverage of 5,946ha or 16.2%, substantially higher than the national figure of 10%. Total tree cover for the Sheffield district, calculated by iTree, is 18.4%. • 23.5% of Sheffield’s lowland woodland is categorised as ancient semi-natural woodland (ASNW) or plantations on ancient woodland sites (PAWS). This covers 3.5% of the Sheffield district and is higher than the figure of 2.3% for the UK. • Sheffield’s woodlands are a valuable recreational resource. Ninety-four percent of people have access to a large woodland (20ha) within 4km of their residence and nearly half of Sheffield’s population has access to a 2ha woodland within 500m. • Over half of Sheffield’s woodlands are covered by designations such as Local Wildlife Sites (LWSs) and 63% of land with LWS designation is woodland. Most sites are improving; over 70% of woodland habitat within LWSs is in positive conservation management. Over 92% of ancient woodland is covered by a site designation. • Compared to UK trends, bird species considered in the UK Biodiversity Indicator ‘C5b: woodland birds’ are doing well, particularly woodland generalists, indicating the good health of Sheffield’s woodlands. • Threats to woodlands in Sheffield include habitat fragmentation, damage from recreation and spread of invasive species from gardens. Continued improvements in woodland management, including the input of local groups, can help tackle this. West Ecclesfield Ward Priorities 2014-15
West Ecclesfield Ward Priorities 2014/15 Ward Description The West Ecclesfield Ward includes the neighbourhoods of Grenoside, Burncross and High Green and has a population of 17,699. The ward has a proportionately high young population (17%) and a large older population (21%). The 2011 Census indicates that 4% of West Ecclesfield Ward is BME, lower than the city average. High Green neighbourhood is the most deprived in the ward, with around 16% of people living in areas amongst the most deprived 10% in England. High Green, Burncross and Grenoside used to be villages in their own right and retain many of their distinctive features setting them apart from the urban area of north east Sheffield. Residents have good access to open fields and countryside including at Greno Woods in the west of the ward. The A61 Penistone Road, a key transport link to the M1 and major trans- pennine routes, runs through Grenoside. The established and stable Burncross population lives predominantly in owner occupied private houses. Grenoside has a mix of housing types and tenures, including post war social housing and new developments and old, stone-built cottages from the original village. There is a strong sense of identity in the neighbourhood with active community groups and organisations. High Green is Sheffield's most northerly suburban neighbourhood. New developments blur its boundary with Chapeltown. However a third of residents live in social housing; at the heart of the area is a large council estate surrounded by private housing. Part of High Green falls within the top 10% most deprived areas in the country and has been the focus of health and community development activity.
