Here schools and visitors can explore 1 Farm 2 the plants and animals in the ponds, meadow and trees. Co m mon L Golf course ane 2 Past Parsonage Farm there is an optional trail on the 9 left. Follow this path to admire the great views of Wharncliffe 3 R iv Crags. Rejoin the trail at point 4. e r Walder’s Townend D o Low Common n Parsonage Farm was established near Townend Common 700 years ago. Owned by a local church it was the Parson's home. Cote It would originally have been thatched with local heather. 8 4 Bitholmes House 5 7 Hollin Edge Wood Farm 6 3 Leave the easy going trail and take a left through Bank House Townend Common towards Hollin Edge Farm. This area was common land for local people to graze animals and cut plants for livestock bedding. Townend Common is now a Local Nature Reserve with a variety of habitats, including Wantley Dragon heathland. Heathland is a very important habitat for highly Wood specialised species of plants, insects and birds. M o r e H a l l L a n e 4 Follow the inclined track on the right. Just past the barns take the left. At the dry stone wall continue right to More Hall More Hall follow the trail running between the parallel stone walls. It is believed to date from the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Stone to Steel is a project celebrating 10,000 years Age and may have been reused as a burial chamber for of human history in the Upper Don Valley. It is a Walder, a Saxon chief. Being approximately 5000 years old, partnership between the Steel Valley Project, South this monument is about the same age as Stonehenge. Yorkshire Forest Partnership and Sheffield City Council that covers an area of approximately ten square miles 9 Follow the footpath across the golf course, passing around Stocksbridge. It encompasses the towns and the hawthorns, the bridge, and the Birch trees. Walk villages of Stocksbridge, Midhopestones, Wharncliffe through the small alleyway left of the bungalow.     HILLSBOROUGH HALL & HILLSBOROUGH PARK The Steades Thomas Steade was the builder of Hillsborough Hall. He was the son of Nicholas Steade and Anne Micklethwaite and was born on 16 March 1728 at Ecclesfield. He married Millicent (Meliscent) Pegge, who was the daughter of Strelley Pegge of Beauchief and Mary Broughton from Lowdham, on 30 April 1768. He was a magistrate and he died in 1793. Hillsborough House was built in 1779 as a dwelling for Thomas and his wife Meliscent who had been living in nearby Burrowlee House, which is situated just 250 metres to the east. The Steades were a family of local of landowners whose history went back to the 14th century. At the time of construction the house stood in rural countryside well outside the Sheffield boundary. Steade named his new residence in honour of Wills Hill who at the time was known as the Earl of Hillsborough (later Lord Downside of Hillsborough, County Down), an eminent politician of the period and a patron of the Steades. Steade acquired more land and the grounds eventually had an area of 103 acres (0.42 km2). They were much more extensive than the present Hillsborough Park, stretching north to the current junction of Leppings Lane and Penistone Road and included the site on which Hillsborough Stadium now stands. It extended further south encompassing the site now occupied by the Hillsborough arena. The grounds had areas given over to agriculture but there was also extensive parkland featuring a lake, two lodges and a tree lined avenue. There was also a walled garden, which still exists today, which provided fresh produce for the house’s kitchens.

It starts by following Underbank reservoir before a climb up to Midhope. Excellent views across the valley are afforded before the route drops down to the River Porter and then up to Langsett. We return to Underbank along the line of the railway that was originally built to supply materials during the construction of Langsett Reservoir between 1889 and 1905.
