Mission Statement Prince of Peace Lutheran Church is a family of Christians Growing in Faith and Reaching out in Love

Welcome to God's House which is the spiritual home of all who worship today, wherever you may be. Part of Prince of Peace Church's mission statement says that we are "a family of Christians." Because God has made us family, we are together, even though we are physically separated, to receive the Lord's strength, comfort and peace. Christ, our brother, is with us, and his presence will change us. As new people, we leave this time of worship to live our daily lives in the world as ambassadors for Christ. Go, but remember to come home. See you next Sunday!

The Glass Cross on the Altar is unique. There are only 3 of these handmade crosses in the world. The other two are in congregations with whom we share our ministry. One is on the altar of Kopano Lutheran Church in Mogwase, South Africa and the other is at the Evangelische Stadtpfarrkirche Hermannstadt in Sibiu, Romania. These Lutheran churches are ministry partners with us with whom we have shared visits, resources and mutual support. Each Sunday as we gather in worship under this common cross, we are reminded of our faith in our Savior, Jesus the Christ, whose Spirit unites peoples of different countries, races, cultures and histories under His benevolent love.

GATHERING MUSIC Be My Home Handt Hanson & Paul Murakami (Based on Psalm 46)

WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS P Blessed be the holy , ☩ one God, who creates, redeems, and sustains us and all of creation. C Amen P Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. P Faithful God, C have mercy on us. We confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We turn from your loving embrace and go our own ways. We pass judgment on one another before examining ourselves. We place our own needs before those of our neighbors. We keep your gift of salvation to ourselves. Make us humble, cast away our transgressions, and turn us again to life in you through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen P God hears the cries of all who call out in need, and through his death and resurrection, Christ has made us his own. Hear the truth that God proclaims: Your sins are forgiven in the name of ☩ Jesus Christ. Led by the Holy Spirit, live in freedom and newness to do God’s work in the world. C Amen

GATHERING SONG A Mighty Fortress Is Our God ELW 504 A mighty fortress is our God, a sword and shield victorious; he breaks the cruel oppressor's rod and wins salvation glorious. The old satanic foe has sworn to work us woe! With craft and dreadful might he arms himself to fight. On earth he has no equal.

No strength of ours can match his might! We would be lost, rejected. But now a champion comes to fight, whom God himself elected. You ask who this may be? The Lord of hosts is he! Christ Jesus, mighty Lord, God's only Son, adored. He holds the field victorious.

Though hordes of devils fill the land all threat'ning to devour us, we tremble not, unmoved we stand; they cannot overpow'r us. Let this world's tyrant rage; in battle we'll engage! His might is doomed to fail; God's judgment must prevail! One little word subdues him.

2

God's Word forever shall abide, no thanks to foes, who fear it; for God himself fights by our side with weapons of the Spirit. Were they to take our house, goods, honor, child, or spouse, through life be wrenched away, they cannot win the day. The kingdom's ours forever!

PRAYER OF THE DAY P Let us pray. C Almighty God, gracious Lord, we thank you that your Holy Spirit renews the church in every age. Pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep them steadfast in your word, protect and comfort them in times of trial, defend them against all enemies of the gospel, and bestow on the church your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

FIRST READING Jeremiah 31:31-34 The renewed covenant will not be breakable, but like the old covenant it will expect the people to live upright lives. To know the LORD means that one will defend the cause of the poor and needy (Jer. 22:16). The renewed covenant is possible only because the LORD will forgive iniquity and not remember sin. Our hope lies in a God who forgets. 31The days are surely coming, says the LORD, will put my law within them, and I will write it on when I will make a new covenant with the house their hearts; and I will be their God, and they of Israel and the house of Judah. 32It will not be shall be my people. 34No longer shall they teach like the covenant that I made with their ancestors one another, or say to each other, “Know the when I took them by the hand to bring them out of LORD,” for they shall all know me, from the least the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will though I was their husband, says the LORD. 33But forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no this is the covenant that I will make with the more. house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I R Word of God, word of life. C Thanks be to God. 5

SECOND READING Romans 3:19-28 Paul’s words stand at the heart of the preaching of and other Reformation leaders. No human beings make themselves right with God through works of the law. We are brought into a right relationship with God through the divine activity centered in Christ’s death. This act is a gift of grace that liberates us from sin and empowers our faith in Jesus Christ. 19Now we know that whatever the law says, it through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, speaks to those who are under the law, so that 25whom God put forward as a sacrifice of every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He may be held accountable to God. 20For “no human did this to show his righteousness, because in his being will be justified in his sight” by deeds divine forbearance he had passed over the sins prescribed by the law, for through the law comes previously committed; 26it was to prove at the the knowledge of sin. 21But now, apart from law, present time that he himself is righteous and that the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27Then attested by the law and the prophets, 22the what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 28For we hold that a person is justified by faith 23since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of apart from works prescribed by the law. God; 24they are now justified by his grace as a gift,

R Word of God, word of life. C Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL READING John 8:31-36 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John. C Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus speaks of truth and freedom as spiritual realities known through his word. He reveals the truth that sets people free from sin. Matthew 21:23-32 31Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, saying, ‘You will be made free’?” 34Jesus answered “If you continue in my word, you are truly my them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who disciples; 32and you will know the truth, and the commits sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not truth will make you free.” 33They answered him, have a permanent place in the household; the son “We are descendants of Abraham and have never has a place there forever. 36So if the Son makes been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by you free, you will be free indeed.” P The Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ. 6

SERMON CHANGING THE RULES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GAME! Pastor Roger McQuistion

HYMN OF THE DAY Thy Strong Word ELW 511 Thy strong word did cleave the darkness; at thy speaking it was done. For created light we thank thee, while thine ordered seasons run. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise to thee who light dost send! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia without end!

Lo, on those who dwelt in darkness, dark as night and deep as death, broke the light of thy salvation, breathed thine own life-breathing breath. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise to thee who light dost send! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia without end!

Thy strong Word bespeaks us righteous; bright with thine own holiness, glorious now, we press toward glory, and our lives our hopes confess. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise to thee who light dost send! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia without end!

From the cross thy wisdom shining breaketh forth in conqu'ring might; from the cross forever beameth all thy bright redeeming light. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise to thee who light dost send! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia without end!

Give us lips to sing thy glory, tongues thy mercy to proclaim, throats that shout the hope that fills us, mouths to speak thy holy name. Alleluia! Alleluia! May the light which thou dost send fill our songs with alleluias, alleluias without end!

God the Father, light-creator, to thee laud and honor be. To thee, Light of Light begotten, praise be sung eternally. Holy Spirit, light-revealer, glory, glory be to thee. Mortals, angels, now and ever praise the holy Trinity!

APOSTLES’ CREED P With the whole church, let us confess our faith. C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

CLOSING HYMN The Church’s One Foundation ELW 654 The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the word. From heav'n he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.

Elect from ev'ry nation, yet one o'er all the earth, her charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth: one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with ev'ry grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder this world sees her oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up: "How long?" And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.

Through toil and tribulation and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore; till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.

Yet she on earth has union with God, the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. Oh, blessed heav'nly chorus! Lord, save us by your grace, that we, like saints before us, may see you face to face.

C Blessed are you for raising Jesus from the dead, in him promising new life to all.

INVITATION P Come to the Table. Those who are hungry, come, eat and drink. C Bread for the journey. drink for the desert.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION (Pastor will lead this, line by line; you are invited to repeat each line and do the same actions. When we have finished these words, then communion may be shared.) 10

(You may now share the bread and wine with one another. You may use these or similar words.) • This is the body of Christ, broken for you. • This is the blood of Christ, shed for you.

Parents/Caregivers speak a blessing over younger children who have not completed communion instruction, saying, “Remember always, you are a beloved child of God!” (or another blessing listed below).

POST COMMUNION PRAYER P Great God of gifts, C We Thank You! P You feed us in many ways C and we are grateful to receive! P We look to you; C we look to each other, and we praise your name. P As you’ve fed us, C now make us food for the world! P As this meal empowers us C To Grow in Faith and Reach out to others in Love! Thank you, Great God of gifts! AMEN

DISMISSAL P Go in Peace! Serve the Lord! C Thanks be to God!

What to do about blessing children? Parents/Caregivers should speak a blessing over younger children who aren’t communing. Please do not commune children who have not completed instruction from PoP. You may place your hands on their heads as you speak the blessing. Both parents/caregivers can do this together. Here are some suggestions. You may use these or similar words that come from your heart. • Remember always, you are a beloved child of God! • May you always know Jesus loves you! • Jesus died and rose again for you and for all and watches over us. • May God keep you in the covenant of your baptism.

What to do with the leftovers? Any bread or wine/grape juice that is left over may be consumed. Even though it has been consecrated for this meal, it is not any more holy than ordinary bread, wine or grape juice. It is to remind us that all food is holy and is a gift from God. Wine may be consumed or poured out on the ground as a sign of God’s gift poured out for all on the earth. Bread may also be placed outside to benefit God’s creatures or used in one’s daily meals as a reminder of God’s gift of our daily bread. If you have a loaf of bread left over, why not use this as a gift to share with your family or neighbors. Include a little note that says something like, “Jesus is the Bread of Life. Here is a gift of bread that was made for your daily life! Enjoy!”

A final favor! Let us know how it went! This Livestream Communion is new to us during this pandemic However, if we go back to the earliest days in Christian history, this was how communion was done, in peoples’ homes. Of course, they didn’t have computers or cell phones to unite them all together, but we do! So, we would like to see and hear your stories. Send us a picture or two, or even a video (popappleton.org) of how you set your table, what bread or wine you used, who was there (names optional), greetings to other members of the Church Deployed! Then come back to the Table on the 2nd and 4th Sundays at 9:40 a.m. during this pandemic and invite your friends, family and neighbors to join us!

Reformation Sunday

The most enduring symbol of the Lutheran Reformation is the seal that Luther himself designed to represent his theology. By the early 1520s, this seal begins to appear on the title page of Luther’s works. Here is how Luther himself explained its meaning: First, there is a black cross in a heart that remains its natural color. This is to remind me that it is faith in the Crucified One that saves us. Anyone who believes from the heart will be justified (Romans 10:10). It is a black cross, which mortifies and causes pain, but it leaves the heart its natural color. It doesn’t destroy nature, that is to say, it does not kill us but keeps us alive, for the just shall live by faith in the Crucified One (Romans 1:17). The heart should stand in the middle of a white rose. This is to show that faith gives joy, comfort, and peace—it puts the believer into a white, joyous rose. Faith does not give peace and joy like the world gives (John 14:27). This is why the rose must be white, not red. White is the color of the spirits and angels (cf. Matthew 28:3; John 20:12). This rose should stand in a sky-blue field, symbolizing that a joyful spirit and faith is a beginning of heavenly, future joy, which begins now, but is grasped in hope, not yet fully revealed. Around the field of blue is a golden ring to symbolize that blessedness in heaven lasts forever and has no end. Heavenly blessedness is exquisite, beyond all joy and better than any possessions, just as gold is the most valuable and precious metal.
