Major themes of Italian culture and thought are presented in historical context and brought to life through guided tours and visits to churches, museums, palaces, seaside areas and other significant sites to understand the cultural unit and diversity of present-day Italy. Led by a Palazzi professor, students will be on assignment as travel scholars, starting in Rome and moving north through the region of Tuscany. Rome (2 days) This legendary capital of the Roman Empire and current political capital of Italy is one of the most visited cities in the world. As well as visiting the not to be missed historic sights of the Coliseum, the Forum and the Pantheon, students will also experience a lesser explored side to Rome including Ostia, the harbor city of ancient Rome. AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES Sports: In association with our Department of Physical Education and Student Life Department, Palazzi aims to provide students with a safe, monitored environment in which to exercise. We understand that one must be in shape in all aspects of their life in order to truly appreciate their Italian experience: 'Mens sana in corpore sano' (healthy mind, healthy body) is our philosophy. Throughout the high school program, students will have the opportunity to participate in afternoon group sports activities such as volleyball, basketball and football (soccer). Students will also have free access to the school gym, equipped with free weights, stationary bike, treadmill and elliptical machine. Discover Florence: These tours are designed to broaden students' Italian experience through a wide range of cultural activities focusing on a variety of subjects that have shaped historic and contemporary Italian culture.
