SETTING THE SCENE The Cleveland State men’s basketball team enters this weekend’s pair of Horizon League games in search of going 6-0 in the Horizon League for the first time since the 2007-08 season. Tre Gomillion is coming off of a career day, pouring in a career-best 23 points on 11-12 shooting from the field in a come-from-behind victory against Youngstown State on Sunday, Dec. 27 at the . Torrey Patton scored 19 points that game, all in the second half, while D’Moi Hodge chipped in 14 points, in addition to a game-high four steals.

ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS Junior forward Deante Johnson had a record-setting performance in the team’s first contest of the season at Toledo (12/1/20). Johnn- son grabbed a career-high tying 10 rebounds (last done 1/5/20 at Green Bay) and set a new career-high in blocks, rejecting five shots. The junior’s five blocks are tied for seventh-most in a single game in Cleveland State history. Johnson is the 24th Viking in CSU history to swat five shots (last done by Charlie Woods vs. Valpo, 2/3/11) and is one of only 18 players in NCAA Divion I to record 10+ rebounds and 5+ blocks in a single game this season (as of 12/24/20).

FIRST GAME JITTERS? NEVER HEARD OF ‘EM Coach Gates played four freshman against the Rockets on Dec. 1, with freshman guard Alec Oglesby getting the start and leading the team in steals (two). Forward Jayson Woodrich made an impact off of the bench, leading all bench scoring, pouring in 11 points on a 4-8 (.500) clip from the floor, while Demetrius Terry saw 10 minutes of play going 2-3 (.667) from the field scoring two points and forward Mabor Majak saw two minutes of action.

BUILDING MOMENTUM The 2020-21 Cleveland State men’s basketball program looks to build off of last season’s momentum, as the Vikes finished with seven league wins, the most since the 2014-15 season, won three consecutive league games for the first time since 2014-15 and three straight non-conference games for the first time since 2011-12.

COACH OF THE YEAR HONORS In his first season at Cleveland State, Horizon League head coaches, sports information directors and media members voted Dennis Gates as Horizon League Co-Coach of the year, along with Wright State’s Coach Nagy. Gates is only the second head coach in Cleve- land State history to be awarded the league’s honor, joining Gary Waters (2007-08). MEET THE CAPTAINS The Cleveland State men’s basketball captains for the 2020-21 season include: Algevon Eichelberger, Torrey Patton, Craig Beaudion and Deante Johnson. The team’s bench captain is sophomore guard Jeremy Sanchez, while the freshman captain is three-star recruit Alec Oglesby. RETURNING PRODUCTION In Horizon League play, the Vikings are returning over 80% of their production from last season: 83% of total points, 84% of total rebounds, 82% of total assists, 86% total blocks and 83% of total steals. FRESH FACES The Vikes enter the 2020-21 season with the top-ranked recruiting class in the Horizon League, per Rivals.com. The class includes transfers Chris Greene, D’Moi Hodge, Yahel Hill, and freshmen Mabor Majak, Alec Oglesby and Jayson Woodrich. The Vikings, ranked 86th in the nation and tied for the fourth-best class in the state of Ohio, tied with the University of Dayton. Nine of 17 Vikings are returning from last season.
