As the 2009 women’s soccer season is set to kick off, the Valparaiso University Crusaders continue to look for the success on the field that has been building for the past five seasons. With five straight 10-win seasons following last year’s 10-6-3 campaign, the Brown and Gold looks to climb into the top half of the Horizon League standings this season. Head coach John Marovich begins his second season at the helm of the Crusaders, and returns 12 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year’s squad. With the addition of eight newcomers, the Crusaders will be a blend of youth and experience heading into the 2009 season.

Seniors Senior goalkeeper Mele Cabral looks to lead the way for the Brown and Gold. In 2008, her first season as a starter, she played every minute between the posts for the Crusaders on her way to a school-record 10 shutouts and as well as a school-best 0.71 goals against average. In her three seasons overall, her 12 shutouts rank second on Valpo’s all-time list. A team captain, she enters the season with a career 0.65 GAA. Offensively, Sarah Jewell enters her final campaign with the Crusaders ranked sixth all-time at Valpo with 13 goals while her 31 career points are eighth on the all-time charts. She will be called upon to lead the front line as Valpo looks for production from the upperclassmen to score goals. A pair of senior midfielders also return for their final season with the Brown and Gold. Jackie Kondratko was tied for the team lead with three goals in 2008, including a pair of match-winning tallies. She started 16 matches one year ago and was honored for her work both in the classroom and on the field, being named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V First Team. Jessie White begins her final year as a consistent presence in the Valpo lineup. Having started 52 of 57 matches during her career, she not only is a scoring threat with seven career goals, but distributes the ball out of the midfield, turning defense into offense with her six career assists.

Juniors Senior Mele Cabral The Crusaders have just two returning juniors in terms of eligibility on their roster this season. Sarah Melhorn was a mainstay on defense last year as a sophomore, starting 17 matches. She helped the Crusaders to the school-record 10 shutouts during the season. Courtney Gwinn, a redshirt junior, has battled back from injuries early in her career. Last season she was able to provide a spark off of the bench in 10 matches and will look to produce even more this year in both the midfield and at forward.

Sophomores Valpo’s sophomore class is a talented one that saw a great deal of action during the 2008 season. Led by Horizon League All-Newcomer Team selection Tracy Roos, five of the six started at least one match a year ago. Roos started all 19 contests on defense, helping anchor the record-setting backline. She played every minute of 14 contests during her rookie campaign. Sammy Olson started 14 contests alongside Roos on the backline a year ago, after battling back from a knee injury in 2007 that saw her redshirt her freshman season. She played every minute on defense during the first nine contests of the year in 2008. In the midfield, a pair of sophomores garnered a great deal of action during their freshman seasons. Brooke Henderson started 15 contests and played in all 19 as a rookie, helping the Crusaders transition from defense to offense. She, combined with Laura Romberg, helped stabilize the midfield. Romberg added a goal and an assist as a freshman, with her tally being a match-winner in the closing minutes against South Dakota. The midfield duo will look to once again provide stability for the Brown and Gold. Up top, Mikki Nuccio and Becky Clever both return for their second season with the Brown and Gold. Nuccio scored a pair of goals, including a match-winner, as a freshman, while adding an assist. Coming off the bench for most of the season, she and Clever provided energy on offense when they entered the match. Clever saw action in 10 matches as a freshman, and will look for even more time on the field this year. Junior Jessie White Newcomers Marovich has added eight newcomers to the roster this season, with the hopes that they will be able to contribute for the program from the beginning. Casey Pedersen transferred to Valpo from where she scored two goals and registered five assists in two seasons as a midfielder. A junior, she has two years of eligibility remaining with the Brown and Gold. Seven freshmen will also be looking to make their mark with the Crusaders beginning this year. Goalkeeper Rachel DeFrank will back up Cabral to start the season after a stellar high school career which saw her post 26 career shutouts for Mason High School in Ohio. Marie Argo will look to contribute on the backline as well as in the midfield after leading her club team to the state semifinals in Ohio twice during her career. Rachel Hoaglin, a midfielder, was a two-time All-State selection in Minnesota and a finalist for Miss Soccer. Luisa Desario, Janine Lytle, and Trisha Wladecki all can play in the midfield as well as up top for the Crusaders. Desario set her school’s single season record with 31 goals while dishing out 19 assists as a senior. Lytle was a three- time First Team All-Ohio Cardinal Conference selection at Wooster High School. Wladecki was also a three-time All-Conference selection and she racked up 31 assists and 93 total points during her prep career at Avon Lake High School in Ohio, ranking in the top-five all-time in both categories. Forward Catherine Terrell rounds out this year’s incoming class. Terrell was an Honorable Mention All-State selection in Michigan as a senior.

The 2009 season kicks off on August 21 at Morehead State before the Crusaders return home to Eastgate Field two days later to battle Michigan. A challenging non-conference schedule awaits Valpo in preparation for the Horizon League campaign. With a blend of experienced returnees and talented newcomers, another exciting Sophomore season of Crusader soccer is right around the corner for Coach Marovich’s squad. 2009 Valparaiso Soccer 13 2008 IN REVIEW

As the Valparaiso Crusaders ventured into their second season of Horizon League competition, the Brown and Gold entered the season with a new head coach for just the third time in the 16-year history of the program. Longtime assistant John Marovich took over the helm looking to maintain the momentum that had begun under his predecessor, Stephen Anthony, including five straight winning seasons, in which the Crusaders won at least 10 matches a year. With 14 letterwinners returning to start the year, along with six newcomers, Valpo had the tools in place for yet another successful season. The year opened with a thrilling 1-0 home shutout victory against Ball State in a match which saw Jackie Kondratko score with less than 20 minutes to play in regulation to start the season off with a victory for the fourth straight year. Valpo then headed to Colorado for a pair of matches to begin the road portion of the schedule. A closely contested 1-0 loss at Colorado College was followed by another thrilling 1-0 victory at Air Force as Kondratko again provided the heroics for the Crusaders. The win against Air Force spearheaded a seven-match unbeaten streak for Valpo. The Crusaders came home and played at Brown Field for the first time ever, and used the ProGrass surface to their advantage, notching a goal early in the second overtime to down instate foe IUPUI for their third 1-0 shutout victory of the young season. Heading back onto the road, the Brown and Gold added another victory against an Sarah Jewell instate rival, Indiana State, 2-1, before playing Northern Illinois to a score- less draw. Two more 1-0 shutouts followed, including a win against IPFW that saw senior Dana McGlone find the back of the net with just 12 seconds remaining in regulation to improve Valpo to 4-0 against the state of Indiana. A home win against Central Michigan, the fifth 1-0 blanking of the year, followed by a 2-1 win over South Dakota in which the Crusaders won in the final three minutes yet again, made Valpo 6-0-1 during the unbeaten streak, giving the team a great deal of confidence heading into the Horizon League schedule. As conference play began, the Crusaders found results a little tougher to come by. Butler downed Valpo 2-0 to open the Horizon League slate and Wright State added a win by the same score a week later. The Brown and Gold finally broke through with its first con- ference win at home against Youngstown State, as Jackie Thomas scored with just 1:42 remaining on the clock for Valpo’s third win on the season in the final three minutes. Detroit tallied two goals in the second half a week later to post a one-goal victory over the Crusad- Jackie Kondratko ers before Valpo topped Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 2-0 in the final non-conference tilt of the season. As the stretch run of the regular season began, the Crusaders dropped a tightly fought match 1-0 against eventual league co-champion Loyola (Chicago) before rebounding on Senior Day to earn a much needed 2-0 victory over Cleveland State. Valpo then headed to Wisconsin to wrap up the regular season. A scoreless double overtime draw at Green Bay opened the weekend before the Crusaders closed the campaign with a 3-1 setback against 18th-ranked Milwaukee, the other co-champion in the Horizon League. With a 2-5-1 Horizon League record, Valpo earned the eighth seed in the conference tournament, hosting Youngstown State in the first round. The match marked the first time in the program’s history that the Crusaders hosted a conference tournament match at Eastgate Field. Valpo controlled play throughout the contest, outshooting the Penguins 29-6, including 12-3 on goal, and had 13 corner kick opportunities in the match. Youngstown State managed to keep the ball out of the net though, and forced penalty kicks after the two schools played 110 minutes Sammy Olson of scoreless soccer. Youngstown State converted on all five opportunities in the shootout to advance to the quarterfinals 5-4, ending Valpo’s season. The Crusaders concluded the year 10-6-3 overall, the fifth straight winning season for the program. Valpo’s 10 wins tied for the third most in school history, and Mele Cabral set a new school single-season mark with 10 shutouts on the year. The defense was the strong suit all year long, as the Crusaders surrendered just 14 goals in 19 matches, setting a new school mark with a 0.71 goals against average as well. Thomas became Valpo’s first All-Horizon League First Team selection for her solid play on defense all year long. The senior played in 76 matches during her career, and earned all-conference honors all four seasons with the Brown and Gold. Fellow senior, Kendall Brown, earned Second Team All-Horizon League accolades, leaving the Crusader program third all-time with 20 career goals and tied for second with 52 career points. Freshman defender Tracy Roos showed signs of what is in store for the future of the program, earning All-Newcomer Team honors in the conference. She started all 19 matches on defense, helping to anchor the backline. Besides Thomas, Brown, and McGlone, five other Crusaders wrapped up their careers with the Brown and Gold in 2008. Tiffany Giusti, Lori Johnson, Laura Murphy, and Reva Van Aartsen were all members of the program for four years while Erin Suckling transferred in prior to her senior campaign and provided quality minutes off of the bench in her one season in a Valpo uniform. As Valpo heads into the 2009 season, the Crusaders will return 14 letterwinners from the 2008 squad, including eight starters. With five straight 10-win seasons in the rear view mirror, Valpo will look to add even more victories to the Sarah Melhorn record books when the new season opens.

A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the , Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top 10 collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

ATHLETIC SUCCESS In the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by three Sweet Sixteen appearances (Butler 2003, 2007; Milwaukee 2005) and nine wins in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in the past seven seasons. In other sports, League teams have won at least one game in their respective NCAA Championships each of the last seven seasons in men’s soccer (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last five seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Green Bay’s women’s basketball team added to that résumé with a victory in the 2007 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship. Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

2009 Valparaiso Soccer 19 EASTGATE FIELD

Eastgate Field has been home to the Valparaiso University soccer teams since 1983, when the men’s program was founded. During the early years of the men’s program, the Crusaders played their home matches at both Eastgate Field and Brown Field on the university’s campus, while also playing on the baseball field for several matches. By the early 1990s, Valpo moved all of its home contests to Eastgate Field. In 1993, when the Valpo women’s program was founded, both teams began to share the field. The women opened on September 5, 1993 with a 7-0 loss to Northern Illinois. They picked up their first home victory on October 26 of the same season, downing Wisconsin-Whitewater 1-0. Beginning in the 2004 season, Eastgate Field became a huge homefield advantage for the women’s soccer team. The Crusaders have posted a 30-10-2 mark over the past five seasons, including a school- best seven wins during the 2005 championship season. The home record win total of seven victories was then matched during the 2007 season. Eastgate Field has played host to the Mid-Continent Conference men’s soccer tournament twice during its existence. The first championship was held in 1997, with the event staged at Eastgate Field again one year later. In 2008, Valpo hosted its first Horizon League Championships match, the first postseason competition at Eastgate Field in the history of the Crusader women’s program. Renovations have taken place throughout the years at Eastgate Field. In 1999, a new scoreboard was added at the field. Toward the end of the 2000 season, team shelters were added along with an official’s dugout. More additions took place prior to the 2001 season as a new set of bleachers was added to the complex, giving the field a seating capacity of 500. In addition, a press box was added at the top of the bleachers, featuring an area for television and radio broadcasts. The press box roof is covered, serving as a camera deck. A concession stand was added behind the bleachers. All of the renovations were made possible by a generous gift to the school. Prior to the 2007 campaign, new team shelters were erected on the east end of the field, helping to improve sight lines for spectators.

Valpo in the Community

The Valparaiso University women’s soccer team is con- stantly giving back to the community in various ways. During the 2008 season alone, the Crusaders participated in several events to help raise awareness and/or money for organizations. On October 12, 2008, the Crusaders went Passionately Pink in their match against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Valpo al- lowed individuals to sponsor the pink jerseys the team wore during the match, with the donor receiving the jersey follow- ing the contest. All of the proceeds went to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation to help fight breast cancer. Valpo also sponsored a Firefighters’ Appreciation and Awareness Day at the home finale on October 19 against Cleve- Firefighter Appreciation Day land State. The Crusaders invited the local fire departments to the match, and fans were invited to visit with the firefighters along with tour the fire trucks. Senior Lori Johnson was a member of a local fire department, helping bring inspiration to such an event. Mikki Nuccio and the Crusaders wore pink in support of breast cancer.

University History Founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1859 as Valparaiso Male and Female College, Valparaiso University as its known today began as one of the first coeducational colleges in the United States. Just 75 male and female students made up its first class of students and studied subjects such as math, literature, history, the sciences, and philosophy. Although the college was commended for its innovations in integrating male and female education, the effects of the Civil War, industrialization, and changes made in Indiana Legislature forced the school to close its doors in 1871. The college reopened in 1873 as the Northern Indiana Normal School and Business Institute by enterprising educator Henry Baker Brown and soon became a flourishing proprietary institution. In 1900, Brown renamed the school Valparaiso College, and in 1906 it was renamed again as Valparaiso University. During the next 20 years, Valparaiso University achieved national recognition as a low-cost, “no frills” institution of higher learning that graduated alumni who pursued careers as highly-regarded governors, legislators, scientists, business leaders, and more. Enrollment quickly reached 5,000 students and ranked the University second in size only to Harvard, the nation’s oldest private university. Based upon its Midwestern location, low costs, and prestigious rankings, the institution soon became known as “the poor man’s Harvard.” New challenges faced the University following President Brown’s death in 1917, including a decline in enrollment as many students left to fight in World War I and the need to invest heavily in facilities during a time of economic stress. As a result, the Brown family eventually chose to sell the institution. The modern history of Valparaiso University begins with its purchase in 1925 by the Lutheran University Association, a group of clergy and church laity affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) who saw a bright future for the University. Although historically linked to the LCMS, Valparaiso University operates today as an international independent Lutheran university welcoming of all faiths and committed to its mission to “prepare students to lead and serve in church and society.” In 2008-2009, Valpo honored 150 years of tradition and excellence through a year-long sesquicentennial celebration that included the inauguration of the University’s 18th president, Mark A. Heckler. President Heckler continues to uphold Valpo’s distinguished Lutheran heritage and commitments to teaching and scholarship, faith and learning, and vocation and vision as he aims to build upon Valpo’s promise of preparing graduates to become ethical, moral, and professional leaders.

Academics

Consistently ranked a top master’s level institution in the Midwest for quality and value by U.S. News & World Report, Valparaiso University is a private, independent Lutheran university offering more than 70+ undergraduate areas of study within five colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, Nursing, and Christ College – The Honors College. Students seeking graduate study discover a myriad of opportunities through the School of Law and Graduate School. Valpo is located in Valparaiso – a safe, residential city of 31,000, just one hour southeast of Chicago and two and one-half hours north of Indianapolis. The University’s 4,000 students represent most states and more than 50 countries. 66% of students live on campus. Extensive leadership, undergraduate and graduate research, and internship opportunities are available to students, as well as nearly 100 extracurricular activities, including NCAA Division I Horizon League intercollegiate sports, and opportunities for service learning and civic engagement. A 12:1 student-to-teacher ratio and a typical class size of 20 ensure that students receive personal attention from professors. Students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities and technology such as a Virtual Nursing Learning Center, VisBox™ virtual-learning system, theater, non-linear video editing lab, a campus radio station, 16-inch computer-controlled reflecting telescope, DNA sequencing, weather station with Doppler Radar, Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources that is equipped with a robotic book-retrieval system, and the new 202,000 square foot Harre Union that houses all on-campus dining facilities and includes a convenience store, the University Bookstore, a recreation area, student organization suite, ballroom, and more. In 2008, Valparaiso University received the prestigious Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization from NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the world’s largest professional association dedicated to international education. The award recognizes Valpo’s ongoing commitment to promoting global learning. Numerous study-abroad programs provide students with the opportunity to study life and culture around the globe, and a wide variety of other programs and events allow students to explore international cultures without ever leaving the Valpo campus.
