ON COFER: The return of a healthy Phil Cofer may be the biggest addition to the Seminoles’ roster for the 2016-17 season…returns healthy after playing in only 11 of 34 games as a sophomore and is expected to be granted a medical redshirt for the 2014-15 season because of ankle surgery on Jan. 4, 2016…played in the Seminoles’ first 11 games of the season and did not play after the Christmas break…his energy, athleticism and strength will give the Seminoles’ frontcourt the type of skilled player they lacked during the 2015-16 season…he was a virtual highlight reel during his freshman season who exhibited an incredible array of high-flying dunks, blocked shots and rebounds that made the nation stand up and take notice of the ultra-talented forward…if his play during his first season in Tallahassee is an indicator of future stardom, he will shine as brightly as any other player in the ACC and nationally during the remainder of his career as a Seminole…is one of Florida State’s hardest working players who is a very high character person in addition to being a talented player… an athletic power forward who displayed the ability to attack the glass on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court during his entire freshman season…ranked second on the team in rebounding with a 4.5 rebounds per game average as a freshman…has the ability to play above the rim on both ends of the court…his quickness allows him to out-maneuver players who might be taller than he is…runs the floor well and finishes around defenders…can score with his extremely quick first step and has the ability to start a primary break after working hard to earn a defensive …earned the No. 1 Play of the Day on ESPN with his monstrous, seen and heard around the college basketball world dunk over ACC Player of the Year and No. 1 overall NBA Draft Choice Jahlil Okafor of Duke on February 9, 2015 as the Seminoles played host the No. 5 ranked Blue Devils in Tallahassee… Said ESPN’s Shane Battier: “This might be a SportsCenter Top 10 – Phil Cofer sending it in with authority over the big fella. Tucker Center (Feb. 4)…scored 10 points, pulled down seven rebounds and blocked one shot in the Seminoles’ 76-73 win over Clemson in the second round of the ACC Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. (March 11)…six second half points including a free throw with 41 seconds remaining to be played gave the Seminoles a 74-66 lead…his six points after halftime proved tremendously important as the Tigers closed the Seminoles’ lead to two with 25 seconds remaining in the game…The Seminoles had led the game by 20 in the second half…a huge defensive rebound with 10 seconds remaining in the game on a missed field goal attempt by Clemson’s Rod Hall helped Cofer and the Seminoles close out the win…Cofer made one of two free throws after the rebound to put the final score at 76-73…scored two of Florida State’s three points on the final 41 seconds to help Florida advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament for the eighth consecutive season…(vs. Duke): Totaled nine points, four rebounds and his signature dunk of his freshman season in Florida State’s only game of the season against NCAA Tournament National Champion Duke…the Blue Devils topped Florida State by a 73-70 score at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee (Feb. 28)…(vs. Miami): Averaged 1.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 0.5 blocked shots in two games against NIT participant Miami during the 2014-15 regular season…a starter in both games and averaged 15.5 minutes played as Florida State and Miami split their two-game regular season series with both teams winning on their home court…scored zero points and added three rebounds as Florida State defeated Miami, 55-54, at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee (Feb. 1)…three points in 14 minutes played in the first half and six minutes played in the second half as Florida State outscored the Hurricanes, 30-18, to take the come from-behind victory…Florida State limited Miami to 18 points, .316 percent shooting and six made field goals in the second half of the victory at home…Florida State trailed Miami by 11 (36-25) at the intermission…scored three points and added three rebounds in Miami’s 81-77 win over Florida State at BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla. (Jan. 24)…was a perfect two of two from the field in the second half as Florida State worked to get back into its game against the Tar Heels…the Seminoles trailed by 11 in the second half before storming back to pull within three with 17 seconds remaining in the game…the Tar Heels outscored the Seminoles by a 3-2 margin to close the game and take the win…(vs. NC State): Totaled four points and four rebounds in Florida State’s only game of the season against NCAA Tournament participant NC State…scored all four of his points from the free throw line as the Wolfpack outscored the Seminoles’ in the last four minutes to take the 72-63 victory over Florida State at the Donald L.
