August 2014 marks the hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, a turning point in world history. The First World War claimed the lives of millions of people across the globe and has shaped the society we live in today. We are all connected to the First World War through our own family history and the heritage of our local communities. As part of commemorating this centenary, the council is publishing this booklet of names of people listed on war memorials across the borough. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parish and town councils for their invaluable help in compiling these lists of the names on the different memorials in their communities. The names have been reproduced as they appear on the memorials and some names appear on more than one memorial. It is important that we continue to recognise and remember the sacrifices that these young men made. These soldiers showed outstanding courage and comradeship in severe conditions whilst enduring unimaginable hardships. It is important that we also reflect on the role played by those at home too. We have invited many of the descendants of the servicemen named on our memorials to events to remember their ancestors as part of our programme of activities to mark this poignant centenary and recognise the contribution of those who fought and died. For more details of our World War One centenary events, please visit www.basingstoke.gov.uk/go/WW1 Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr Roger Gardiner 1 Basingstoke war memorial Archive photograph of the unveiling of Basingstoke War Memorial in 1923 courtesy of Hampshire Arts and Museums Service: Hampshire Record Office The War Memorial purchased for the people of Basingstoke in 1923 has remained unmoved since it was first placed outside the War Memorial Park. Designed by sculptor L. F Roslyn, the statue is set on a plinth of Portland stone and bears a symbolic stone cross on the front. A bronze angel stands on the top of the memorial, with wings outstretched. Roslyn was the son of a German sculptor who designed many World War One memorial statues for other towns in England and Wales. Since the statue’s initial positioning, the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council complex has been built surrounding it. It provides a place for quiet remembrance with the War Memorial Park nearby. A total of 337 names are inscribed on the three bronze panels, 229 of which are the names of the Basingstoke servicemen killed in the First World War. The remaining 108 names are of those killed in the Second World War. 2 Adnam S F Dear P Gosling G Allen F Dear P E Gregory F C Allen G Dibley F G Gregory W T Andrews R A Dibley W F Griffin T L Andrews W H Dicker F Griffiths C W Ballard J Dodd E Hailstone H Barton G Dodd R Hailstone R P Baston W E Dolton W H Hailstone T H Batten J Dray H Hale S F Baulch Ft Dry F J Hall W G Blackburn J E Ede G Hamblin F Blundy A Ede P Harrison J Bond A Egg G Hasler C G Bond E A Elliott E Hatcher P C Bond F Elliott F Hill W Boyer B Elliott G Hitchcock R E J Brewer B Ferguson F Hopgood W Bridgeman E Fisher W Hunt A Broadley C Fitzgerald E Ilsley A Broadley H Fletcher H Ilsley A E Broadley J Ford H P Ilsley C Broadley P Fosbury R G Ilsley J Budden C Fowle W A Jacobs A Budden G Fowles F J Jacobs L Burridge T Fraser A James J Butler F Frost H Joice P Butt W G Frude E Joice R Cleall F D Fulker C Kerridge A G Colyer A Gaines C Keyes H Cook E C Goddard L A Kinchin F Copestake W O Gomme R C King G Cornish H Goodyear W C King H J Cowdrey E Gosling A Kite C F Culver W Gosling E J P Kneller F 3 Knight C F Oliver T J Shadwell W C Knight F G Paice F Sheppard C Lansley A Paice N Shorney A Lawes C Painter F J Shorney E Leadbetter T H Palmer W Simmons F W Leadbetter W Parker H Simmons P E M Leavey F W Parsons S Smith A C Lipscombe R G Pellatt J Smith A G Logan J Phillips A E Smith A S Long A T Phillips N A Smith C Lovelock F Phillips S J Smith F Lucas R Piper C Smith F A Lunn A Pittard A J Smith G Lunn F Plante A G Smith H P Marlow D Plester W R Smith W Martin E Pointer A C Smith W G Martin F Pound W G Snelling A Mayo E Powell C W Stainer T Mayo R Prance C Slark W J Mercer S A Pullinger W Stevens E J Merryweather A Purdue A G Stevens W Millard H G M Purdue J Stratton E W Millard S R Purdue W G Switsur H Mills T Ranson L Tarrant G H Mosdell A Raynbird P Taylor W C Mosdell W G Raynbird W Thumwood S Moth F Richardson F A Tigwell G Munday L Roberts E Tigwell W C Munton R Rossiter P Tricker H Myland H N Rowell A A Trodd F A Nash F Rowell C J Tubb F G North E D Rumbold H Tyrell A H North G Rumbold S Upward J North J Russell C H Vince F R North W E Seal G Walker W 4 Wallis F H G Webber M Willoughby F Ward D Wedge L Wilmott A J Ware T H Wellspring O W Wilson W C Watmore A W Westbrook E Witts S E Watson A H Weston A Wootten G A Watson J Wheeler J Wootten J E Way A Whiteland H C Wyeth B Webb G Wigg M E Yarlett W Webb W J Wild A Archive photograph of the Guard of honour at unveiling of War Memorial in 1923 courtesy of Hampshire Arts and Museums Service: Hampshire Record Office 5 Basingstoke - St Michael’s Church The Memorial Chapel, at the north east corner of the church, was commissioned
