R194826 The Christchurch natural vegetation pattern in pre-human M = moist soils ustulatus, toetoewhatu, giant umbrella sedge (M/S) times was diverse. Between the floodplains of the northern S = swamp/boggy areas Dacrycarpus dacrydioides, kahikatea, white pine (M) rivers, the estuary and coastal dunes in the east and the loess- WE = water's edge Elaeocarpus hookerianus, pōkākā (M) capped basalt of the Port Hills to the south, there was a huge SM = salt marsh Eleocharis acuta, sharp spike sedge (M/S/WE) mosaic of open swampland, swamp forest, woodland and FD = Free draining areas Hebe salicifolia, koromiko (M) tussock grassland. Juncus caespiticius, wī, grass-leaved rush (S) Apodasmia similis, oioi, jointed wire rush (S) Riccarton Bush is a fine example of the tall podocarp/ Juncus edgariae, wī, leafless rush(M/S) richardii, toetoe (M) hardwood forest that once thrived on the poorly drained Juncus pallidus, wī, giant rush, leafless rush(S/WE) Baumea rubiginosa, New Zealand sedge (S) alluvial sediments of the Waimakariri River and its tributaries. Juncus planifolius, wī (S/WE) Bolboschoenus caldwellii, purua, sedge (M/S) Juncus sarophorus, wī (S/WE) The species represented in the display garden are a sample Bulbinella angustifolia, Māori onion (FD) Leptospermum scoparium, mānuka, tea tree (M) of the Christchurch and Motukarara wetlands, and river- and Carex buchananii, matirewa, cutty grass (S/WE) stream-margin plants. Other species appropriate to Lophomyrtus obcordata, rōhutu, New Zealand myrtle (M) Carex flagellifera, mānia, tussock grass (FD) Christchurch can be found in our Coastal, Banks Peninsula Mazus novae-zelandiae subsp. impolitus mazus (M/S) Carex flaviformis, pūrei, yellow sedge (S/WE) and Canterbury Plains gardens. Microlaena avenacea Carex geminata, rautahi, cutty grass (S/WE) Phormium tenax, harakeke, New Zealand flax(M/S) Consult the Motukarara Nursery catalogue or other Carex maorica (S) Pittosporum tenuifolium, kōhūhu (M) recommended literature for the height and spread of species, Carex secta, pūkio (S/WE) Schoenoplectus pungens, three square (M/S) environmental preferences and tolerances.
