On Monday, the county Parks and Recreation Committee endorsed its rec- ommended plan for the reha- bilitation of Stock Island’s Bernstein Park. Committee members liked the idea of a new 5,000- square-foot community building with second-floor space for classes or children’s programs. That could increase the project’s cost from a budgeted $3.2 million to about $5 million, County Administrator Roman Gastesi said. The draft park design for open areas features a kiddie playground, basketball court, softball field, full-size soccer field and two smaller soccer fields. Gastesi said the county is studying whether it would be cost effective to spend an additional $1 million on arti- ficial turf to lower long-term maintenance costs. County commissioners are scheduled to review the Bernstein Park propos- al at their April meeting in Key West. More than a month ago, Mike Puto was brought back CELEBRATING OUR PAST to temporarily fill Roger Hernstadt’s place as city man- ager; Hernstadt had quit to become the manager of Marco Island on the other side of the state. Both Bartus and Puto have experience and are well- connected in the community, which doesn’t necessarily make recycling them a bad idea. Both are also genuine- ly good guys and have served the community before, and well. But are we remiss if we don’t remember the quote from Edmund Burke: “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.” Sure, the pool of potential replacements, temporary or otherwise, is fairly thin in a community of around 8,000 people. But shouldn’t we be looking for more diversity? The community said yes to that in November by electing Mark Senmartin — overwhelmingly — to the City Council seat even though he had never held public office. Isn’t that refreshing? And isn’t it a good idea now that Marathon is facing something of a cleanup? Last week, we reported the city has forfeited a signif- icant grant — the second one in a month. One was a $1.53 million National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration grant meant to help purchase Boot Key for preservation. Now the city is on the verge of returning $264,000 ($200,000 plus interest) to the state Department of Environmental Protection. That money was earmarked to help purchase a roughly two-acre parcel of land aimed at expanding the Marathon Community Park. But half that land now has a sewer plant, something the DEP money wasn’t meant to foot. Someone obviously was asleep at the wheel here. It’s also clear the post-Roger Hernstadt cleanup may run deeper than first thought. Last week, the city moved to have its lawyer refund $3,000 for un-justified salary paid to Hernstadt after he accepted his Marco Island position on Jan. 13. But Hernstadt continued to be paid by Marathon through Jan. 30, which in part led to attorney John Herin being ousted Tuesday night as the city’s top legal advisor. Quick Fact: Always check regulations and quotas when targeting deep-water species. They change often due to recreational and commercial quotas being met. How low can you go? Deep-dropping at The Wall is like no other fishing

The conditions were easy to understand: Five to 10 knots and variable winds with temperature highs reaching close to 80 degrees throughout the Florida Keys. The request from the Iowa folks was not nearly as simple: “Take my crew out and show them the most exotic fish you can find, an experience they will never forget.” Capt. Seth Hopp and I agreed the area known as The Wall would be where this adventure would begin on the Reel Deal. The Wall is nearly 25 miles from the Cudjoe Gardens Marina at a heading of 190 degrees and starts around 900 feet deep before it plummets to 2,000 feet in a short On The distance.
