Box 30197, Nairobi, Kenya Key words: pearl oysters, Pinctada margaritifera, occurrence, abundance, population structure, sex expression,Pteria penguin, Pteria chinensis, Kenya Abstract—Pearl oysters are an important marine resource within the Indo-Pacific oceans. They are widely cultured for the production of black pearls, their flesh is eaten, and their shell, known as mother-of-pearl (MOP) is used in the ornament and button industry. The blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera L., has been harvested from East Africa for MOP for decades. A survey within nearshore habitats in Kenya showed that Pi. margaritifera is widely distributed in shallow lagoons, bays and channels. Other oyster species found during the survey were the wing oyster, Pteria penguin, occurring in deep channels in Shimoni and Mombasa, and Pt. chinensis, within lagoons and channels in Malindi, Mombasa and Shimoni. Pinctada margaritifera was most abundant in Gazi Bay within sheltered back reefs and lagoon, and on an intertidal reef flat and back reef in Shimoni. Mean abundance and sizes declined with depth. The abundance of Pi. margaritifera in Kenya was higher than reported in the Pacific Islands and similar to abundances reported in India. The overall mean (34 mm) and maximum (154 mm) sizes were lower than those reported in the Pacific Ocean, but similar to sizes in India and the Red Sea. -

An Environmental History of Nacre and Pearls: Fisheries, Cultivation and Commerce Micheline Cariño and Mario Monteforte he world history of nacre and pearl i sheries, cultivation, and trade is a vast topic. From an- tiquity to the present, it takes us on a journey from myths about the origins of the pearls and their dif erent traditional uses, to complex in- teractions between societies, economies, cul- tures, and environmental issues. Such a history T needs the support of dif erent disciplinary ap- proaches. Biological and ecological studies tell us how oysters develop and form a pearl. Socioeconomic studies of pearls i sheries show several historical constants, such as excessive i shing, a specii c organization of labor, and an unequal distribution of benei ts. Studies on the trade of nacre and pearls highlight the cultural characteristics of dif erent markets in the world. History of science emphasizes the link between the depletion of this natural resource and the scientii c investigations that led to the development of pearl oyster and pearl culture technologies. Nevertheless, the most interesting way to look at the exploitation of pearls is from the perspective of environmental history, to high- light their important role in humanity’s evolving relationship with natural resources. -

Molluscs were exploited for Department of Zoology and industrial, edible and ornamental purposes and their extensive use has been reported way back from time Aquaculture, Acharya immemorial. Hence the present study was focused to investigate the diversity of Molluscan fauna along Nagarjuna University the Paleru and Moosy backwaters of Prakasam district during 2016-17 as these backwaters are not so far Nagarjuna Nagar, explored for malacofauna. A total of 23 species of molluscs (16 species of gastropods belonging to 12 Andhra Pradesh, India families and 7 species of bivalves representing 5 families) have been reported in the present study. Among these, gastropods such as Umbonium vestiarium, Telescopium telescopium and Pirenella cingulata, and bivalves like Crassostrea madrasensis and Meretrix meretrix are found to be the most dominant species in these backwaters. Stephens Department of Fisheries, PO Box 20, North Beach, Western Australia 6920, Australia ABSTRACT: In October 2006, severe mortalities (80 to 100%) were reported in pearl oyster Pinctada maxima production farms from Exmouth Gulf, Western Australia. Only P. maxima were affected; other bivalves including black pearl oysters P. margaratifera remained healthy. Initial investigations indicated that the mortality was due to an infectious process, although no disease agent has yet been identified. Gross appearance of affected oysters showed mild oedema, retraction of the mantle, weak- ness and death. Histology revealed no inflammatory response, but we did observe a subtle lesion involving tissue oedema and oedematous separation of epithelial tissues from underlying stroma. Oedema or a watery appearance is commonly reported in published descriptions of diseased mol- luscs, yet in many cases the terminology has been poorly characterised. The potential causes of oedema are reviewed; however, the question remains as to what might be the cause of oedema in molluscs that are normally iso-osmotic with seawater and have no power of anisosmotic extracellular osmotic regulation. Dif- ferent marine organisms such as molluscs, estuarine fishes, shrimps (pen culture), and seaweeds are cultured along the coast of Thailand. Seafarming, especially for mollusc, is the main activity in Thailand. The important species are blood cockle, oyster, green mussel, and pearl oyster. In 1988, production was approximately 51,000 metric tons in a culture area of 2,252 hectares. Artificial reefs have been constructed in Thailand since 1987 to enhance coastal habitats. Larvae of marine organisms have also been restocked in the artificial reef area. INTRODUCTION The total coastline along the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman sea is approximately 2,600 kilometers. A relatively long period has been spent in surveying coastal area for suitable aquaculture and this resulted in the rapid expansion of coastal aquaculture in Thailand. Different marine organisms such as molluscs, estuarine fish, and seaweeds are cultured along the coast of Thailand. Se recolectaron un total de 381 gasterópodos pertenecientes a 25 especies incluidas en 12 familias, de las cuales las más diversas, de acuerdo con el número de especies, fueron Marginellidae (4), Collumbelidae (4) y Fisurellidae (3). Del total de las especies recolectadas, siete (Marginella haematita, Lucapina sowerby, Cantharus cancellarius, Crassispira tampanensis, Pyrgocytara coxi, Monilispira leusosyma y Terebra nasulla) representan nuevos registros para Venezuela, aunque pueden catalogarse como típicas del Atlántico tropical occidental. Early ontogeny of Jurassic bakevelliids and their bearing on bivalve evolution NIKOLAUS MALCHUS Malchus, N. 2004. Early ontogeny of Jurassic bakevelliids and their bearing on bivalve evolution. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 49 (1): 85–110. Larval and earliest postlarval shells of Jurassic Bakevelliidae are described for the first time and some complementary data are given concerning larval shells of oysters and pinnids. Two new larval shell characters, a posterodorsal outlet and shell septum are described. The outlet is homologous to the posterodorsal notch of oysters and posterodorsal ridge of arcoids. It probably reflects the presence of the soft anatomical character post−anal tuft, which, among Pteriomorphia, was only known from oysters. A shell septum was so far only known from Cassianellidae, Lithiotidae, and the bakevelliid Kobayashites. A review of early ontogenetic shell characters strongly suggests a basal dichotomy within the Pterio− morphia separating taxa with opisthogyrate larval shells, such as most (or all?) Praecardioida, Pinnoida, Pterioida (Bakevelliidae, Cassianellidae, all living Pterioidea), and Ostreoida from all other groups. The Pinnidae appear to be closely related to the Pterioida, and the Bakevelliidae belong to the stem line of the Cassianellidae, Lithiotidae, Pterioidea, and Ostreoidea. The latter two superfamilies comprise a well constrained clade. These interpretations are con− sistent with recent phylogenetic hypotheses based on palaeontological and genetic (18S and 28S mtDNA) data. A more detailed phylogeny is hampered by the fact that many larval shell characters are rather ancient plesiomorphies. This has led to the ceasing of loss- making operations, such as the laboratory, and an increase in students and thus revenue from our education, though it must be qualified that this increase is from overseas rather than the UK.
