1. Introduction An irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold is a simply connected compact K¨ahler man- 0 2 ifold X such that H (X, ΩX ) is one-dimensional spanned by an everywhere non-degenerate holomorphic 2-form. If X is 2-dimensional, then it is a K3 surface. It is well known that if E is a slope-stable vector bundle over a K3 surface X, then the projective bundle P(E) deforms with X to every complex deformation of X [Ve4]. The analogous statement fails if dim(X) > 2 even to first order, since c2( nd(E)) need not remain of Hodge type (2, 2). The starting point of this paper is the observationE that an analogous statement holds for torsion free reflexive sheaves satisfying the infinitesimal condition that the obstruction homomorphism (1.1) obs : HH2(X) Ext2(E, E) E → has rank 1 (Theorem 1.2). Above, HH2(X) is the second Hochschild cohomology of X, con- sidered as the space of natural transformations from the identity functor id : Db(X) Db(X) → to its shift id[2], and obsE sends a natural transformation α to its value αE on E. The space HH2(X) parametrizes first order deformations of the category Coh(X) of coherent sheaves on X and those yield also first order deformations of the derived category Db(X) [To]. The VECTOR BUNDLES ON A HYPER-KAHLER¨ MANIFOLD WITH A RANK 1 OBSTRUCTION MAP 3
2 class obsE(ξ) is the obstruction to lifting ξ HH (X) to a first order deformation of the pair (Db(X), E) (see [To, Prop. 6.1]). ∈ Given an object F Db(X) of non-zero rank r, set κ(F ) := ch(F )exp −c1(F ) . If F is a ∈ r locally free coherent sheaf, then κ(F ) is a characteristic class of the projective bundle P(F ). We first observe that if X is a projective irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold and F b is an object in D (X) with obsF of rank 1, then κ(F ) remains a Hodge class for all K¨ahler deformations of X (see Lemma 2.3). Given an equivalence of derived categories Φ : Db(X) Db(Y ), we have a commutative diagram → Φ HH2(X) ∗ / HH2(Y )
obsF obsΦ(F ) Hom(F, F [2]) / Hom(Φ(F ), Φ(F )[2]), Φ where the horizontal arrows are isomorphisms, and so the rank of obsΦ(F ) and obsF are equal. If rank(F ) = 0, then the restriction of obs to the subspace H0(X, ) of HH2(X) is injective, 6 F OX by [HL, Lemma 10.1.3]. Thus, rank(obsF ) 1 for every object F such that rank(Φ(F )) = 0, for some equivalence of derived categories Φ≥ : Db(X) Db(Y ). Three sources1 of objects6 F → with obsF of rank 1 emerge: b b (1) F = Φ( X ), where Φ : D (X) D (Y ) is an equivalence of derived categories of two projectiveO irreducible holomorphic→ symplectic manifolds. Note that Ext2( , ) is OX OX one dimensional and so obsF has rank 1. (2) F is the image of a sky-scraper sheaf of a point via an equivalence Φ as above (See Section 3.1). F is the image Φ(ι∗L) via an equivalence Φ as above, where ι : Z ֒ X is the embedding (3) of Z as a holomorphic lagrangian submanifold and L is a line bundle→ on Z, such that (a) ι∗ : H1,1(X) H1,1(Z) has rank 1, and (b) L is a rational→ power of the canonical line bundle of Z. Sources (1) and (2) above seem to be special cases of deformations of source (3). If, for exampe, X is the Hilbert scheme S[n] of n points on a K3 surface S and S contains a smooth b [n] rational curve C, then S[n] is the image via an auto-equivalence of D (S ) of the structure O [n] sheaf C[n] of the lagrangian projective space C (see Example 3.12). Similarly, assume that S admitsO an elliptic fibration with a section and C S, 1 i n, are n distinct smooth i ⊂ ≤ ≤ fibers. The sky-scraper sheaf Cp supported on the origin p of the lagrangian abelian variety n [n] b [n] A := i=1 Ci S is the image of A via an auto-equivalence of D (S ). We prove the following statement.⊂ O Q Theorem 1.1. (Theorem 6.24) Let ι : Z X be an embedding of a variety Z as a proper subvariety of an irreducible holomorphic symplectic→ manifold X. Let F be a torsion free coherent sheaf on Z. If obsι∗F has rank 1, then ι(Z) is either a lagrangian subvariety or a point.
1 n 2 n The rank of obsF is 1 for every P -object F , since then dim Hom(F, F [2]) = dim H (P ) = 1. However, all examples of Pn-objects we are aware of arise via one of sources (1) or (3) listed via equivalences of derived categories and deformations. 4 EYAL MARKMAN
The following theorem is a consequence of Verbitsky’s results on hyperholomorphic sheaves in [Ve5] and the fact that κ(F ) remains a Hodge class under all deformations for a sheaf F with a rank 1 obstruction homomorphism obsF . Theorem 1.2. (Theorem 3.4) Let F be a reflexive sheaf of rank r > 0 over an irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold X. Assume that obsF has rank 1 and that F is H-slope- stable with respect to every ample line-bundle H in some open subcone of the ample cone of X. Then for every irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold Y deformation equivalent to X there exists a possibly twisted coherent sheaf E over Y and a flat deformation of the pair (X, F ) to the pair (Y,E). Following is a sketch of the proof of Theorem 1.2. Results of Verbitsky in [Ve5] reduce the proof to showing that c ( nd(F )) remains of Hodge type (2, 2) under all deformations of 2 E X as a K¨ahler manifold. The latter reduces to showing that c2( nd(F )) remains of Hodge type (2, 2) under all first order infinitesimal complex deformationsE of X, by Lemma 2.3. Set 2 0 2 1 2 HT (X) := H (X, T X) H (X,TX) H (X, X ). The Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg isomorphism IHKR :∧HT 2(X⊕) HH2(X)⊕ composesO with obs to a rank 1 homomorphism → F obsHT := obs IHKR : HT 2(X) Ext2(F, F ). F F ◦ → 1 The class c2( nd(F )) remains of Hodge type in the direction of ξ H (X,TX), if and only E 2 ∈ if there exists a class θ H (X, X ), such that F deforms to first order in the direction of (0,ξ,θ) HT 2(X). Toda∈ proved thatO this is the case, if and only if (0,ξ,θ) HT 2(X) belongs ∈ HT HT ∈ to the kernel of obsF (here we use also a result of [Hua] that obsF is the obstruction map HT used by Toda, see Lemma 6.10). Now, if the rank of F does not vanish, then obsF maps 2 2 HT 1 H ( X ) injectively into Ext (F, F ). Thus, the intersection of ker(obsF ) and H (X,TX) 2 O 1 1 ⊕ H ( X ) must project onto H (X,TX). Hence, every ξ H (X,TX) lifts to a class (0,ξ,θ) in O HT ∈ ker(obsF ). Remark 1.3. Theorem 1.2 holds also for abelian surfaces (Remark 3.5). If F is an object in the derived category Db(X) of an abelian variety X of dimension 3, then the minimal rank of 2,0 2 ≥ 2,0 obsF is h (X) := dim(H ( X )). Slope-stable vector bundles F with obsF of rank h (X) are semi-homogeneous (see LemmaO 3.6). These were extensively studied by Mukai [Mu3]. Theorems 1.4 and 1.6 below exhibit two examples of sheaves F satisfying the conditions of the above Theorem. Let (S,H) be a generic polarized K3 surface, let G be an H-slope-stable locally 1 n free sheaf on S with vanishing Ext (G, G). Let the symmetric group Sn act on S permuting the factors. The Hilbert scheme S[n] of length n zero dimensional subschemes of S is isomorphic to an irreducible component of the Sn-Hilbert scheme of length n! zero-dimensional Sn-invariant n 0 subschemes Z of S , such that H ( Z ) is the regular representation of Sn [Hai]. There exists O [n] n a universal Sn-invariant subscheme Γ S S with a Sn-linearization ρ, such that the ⊂ × b n b [n] object ( Γ, ρ) is the Fourier-Mukai kernel of an equivalence BKR : DSn (S ) D (S ) O n →[n] between the Sn-equivariant derived category of S and the derived category of S [BKR]. ⊠n [n] The vector bundle G := G ⊠ G ⊠ ⊠ G over S comes with a canonical Sn-linearizarion ⊠ · · · ρ⊠. The object G[n] := BKR((G n, ρ⊠)) is isomorphic to a rank rn locally free sheaf over S[n]. 2i ⊠ ⊠ 2i Now, Ext ((G n, ρ⊠), (G n, ρ⊠)) is 1-dimensional, for 0 i n, hence Ext (G[n], G[n]) is Sn ≤ ≤ one-dimensional as well, for 0 i n, and so obs [n] has rank 1. ≤ ≤ G VECTOR BUNDLES ON A HYPER-KAHLER¨ MANIFOLD WITH A RANK 1 OBSTRUCTION MAP 5
Theorem 1.4. For every irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold X of K3[n] deformation type there exists a possibly twisted locally free sheaf E and a deformation of the pair (S[n], G[n]) Pn i i Pn C to (X, E). E is a -object, i.e., Ext (E, E) ∼= H ( , ), and in particular E is infinitesimally rigid. E is slope-stable with respect to classes in an open subcone of the K¨ahler cone of X. The theorem is proved in section 10. The theorem was proved by O’Grady in case n = 2, where it was further proven that the moduli space of vector bundles with the same Chern classes as E is a single point [O2]. O’Grady proved that the Chern class c ( nd(G[2])) remains of Hodge 2 E type under all K¨ahler deformations of S[2] by explicitly computing this class. The current paper emerged from the author’s attempt to provide a conceptual explanation to O’Grady’s intriguing result. Remark 1.5. The pair (S, G) in Theorem 1.4 is related, via a finite sequence of deformations and derived equivalences, to the pair (T, T ), for some K3 surface T . More precisely, there O ′ ′ are two sequences (Si, Gi), 0 i N, and (Si, Gi), 0 i N 1, and derived equivalences b ′ b ≤ ≤ ≤ ≤ − Φi : D (Si) D (Si+1), 0 i N 1, such that (S0, G0) = (S, G), (SN , GN ) = (T, T ), ′ ′ → ≤ ≤ − O (Si, Gi) is a deformation of (Si, Gi), and Gi+1 is a slope-stable locally free sheaf isomorphic ′ [n] [n] b ′ [n] b [n] to Φi(Gi). Now, T = T [n] and the BKR-conjugate Φi : D ((Si) ) D (Si+1) of the O ⊠ O → [n] derived equivalence Φ n : Db ((S′)n) = Db (Sn ) is an equivalence mapping (G′ )[n] to G . i Sn i ∼ Sn i+1 i i+1 [n] [n] [n] Hence, the pair (S , G ) is related to the pair (T , T [n] ) via a sequence of deformations and derived equivalences. Let (S,H) be a polarized K3 surface and MH (v) a 2-dimensional projective moduli space of H-slope-stable locally free sheaves over S with Mukai vector v of rank r. Then MH (v) is a K3 surface [Mu2]. Let be a universal vector bundle over S M (v), possibly twisted by U × H a Brauer class θ. Then the Fourier-Mukai transformation Φ : Db(M (v),θ−1) Db(S) is U H → an equivalence [Ca4, Theorem 1.3]. Choose n distinct points [Gi] in MH (v) corresponding to n vector bundles G , 1 i n. The vector bundle G := S G ⊠ G ⊠ ⊠ G i ≤ ≤ ⊕σ∈ n σ(1) σ(2) · · · σ(n) admits a Sn-linearization ρ and any two linearizations yield isomorphic objects (G, ρ) (Remark 4.1). The object BKR(G, ρ) is isomorphic to a rank (n!)rn locally free sheaf F over S[n]. Let p (M (v))[n] be the point corresponding to the length n subscheme of M (v) supported on ∈ H H the set [G ] : 1 i n . F is isomorphic to the image Φ[n](C ) of the U Sn H → Sn U p sky-scraper sheaf Cp. Hence, obsF has rank 1. Theorem 1.6. For every irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold X of K3[n] deformation type there exists a possibly twisted locally free sheaf E and a deformation of the pair (S[n], F ) to (X, E). E is slope-stable with respect to classes in an open subcone of the K¨ahler cone of X. The theorem is proved in Section 11. A criterion for the existence of an untwisted sheaf E in Theorems 1.4 and 1.6 is provided in Section 3.3. We do not know if the property that obsF has rank 1 is an open condition. A priori, the rank of obsF may increase after a deformation of (X, F ). However, the following theorem lists topological consequences of the fact that the rank of obsF is one, and those are clearly deformation invariant. Let X bea2n-dimensional irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold. Consider the vector space H(X, Q) := Qα H2(X, Q) Qβ, ⊕ ⊕ e 6 EYAL MARKMAN endowed with the symmetric bilinear pairing with respect to which α and β are isotropic, (α, β) = 1, U := span α, β is orthogonal to H2(X, Q), and the pairing restricts to the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki− { pairing} on H2(X, Q). Verbitsky and Looijenga-Lunts constructed a canonical (topological) representation of the Lie algebra so(H(X, Q)) on the cohomology ∗ ∗ H (X, Q) (see [LL, Ve3]). Denote by gX the image of so(H(X, Q)) in gl(H (X, Q)). The sub- ∗ ∗ 2 ring SH (X, Q) of H (X, Q) generated by H (X, Q) is isomorphice as a gX -subrepresentation to the irreducible subrepresentation V (n) of Symn(H(X, Q))e spanned by n-th powers of isotropic classes and V (n) appears with multiplicity 1 in H∗(X, Q). Hence, we get a canonical pro- jection from H∗(X, Q) to SH∗(X, Q). Given ane equivalence Φ : Db(X) Db(Y ) between two projective irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds we get an induced→ isomorphism φ : H∗(X, Q) H∗(Y, Q). Taelman proved that φ conjugates g to g and the restriction of → X Y φ to SH∗(X) is induced by an isometry φ˜ : H(X, Q) H(Y, Q). Furthermore, there exists a → canonical gX -equivariant isomorphism Ψ : SH∗(X,e Q) V (ne), → which is (φ, φ˜)-equivariant, up to sign [Ta, Theorems 4.7 and 4.9]. Given an object F of b D (X), let v(F ) := ch(F )√tdX be its Mukai vector and letv ˆ(F ) be the projection of v(F ) to SH∗(X, Q). Note thatv ˆ(F ) does not vanish, if rank(F ) = 0 or if F is a sky scraper sheaf, or if F is the image of such an object via an equivalence of derived6 categories. b Theorem 1.7. (Theorem 6.13) Let F be an object of D (X) with obsF of rank 1. Assume that vˆ(F ) does not vanish.
(1) The stabilizer gv(F ) of v(F ) in gX is equal to the subalgebra of gX annihilating a line ℓ(F ) in H(X, Q). (2) The isomorphism Ψ maps vˆ(F ) into the image of ℓ(F )n via the projection from Symn(H(X, Q)) to V (n).e (3) If the rank r of F does not vanish, then ℓ(F ) = span rα+c1(F )+sβ , for some rationale number s. { } (4) Given an equivalence Φ : Db(X) Db(Y ) between two irreducible holomorphic sym- → plectic manifolds, we have ℓ(Φ(F )) = φ˜(ℓ(F )). Theorem 1.7 shows that H(X, Q) plays a role analogous to that of the Mukai lattice of a K3 surface in the classification of objects F with obsF of rank 1. Note that the rank of obsF is 1 for every simple sheaf F overe a K3 surface, since Ext2(F, F ) is 1-dimensional. We refer to H(X, Q) as the rational LLV lattice. When X is of K3[2]-type2 there exists an integral lattice in H(X, Q), which is preserved by equivalences of derived categories and by monodromy operators [Ta,e Theorem 9.8]. It is sometimes challenging to prove that obsF has rank 1, yet possible to prove the property in Theorem 1.7(1). We prove it in Lemma 7.3 for the structure sheaf of a smooth lagrangian OZ surface Z in X of K3[2]-type, when the restriction homomorphism H2(X, Q) H2(Z, Q) has → rank 1 and c1(ωZ ) belongs to its image. If F satisfies the property in Theorem 1.7(1) we say that F has a rank 1 cohomological obstruction map (see Definition 6.11 (2)). The images of such objects F via derived equivalences each has a rank 1 cohomological obstruction map as well. The modularity Theorem 1.2 above holds if we replace the property that obsF has rank 1 by the property that F has a rank 1 cohomological obstruction map. The line ℓ( Z ) of the structure sheaf of a lagrangian submanifold Z of X, with having a rank 1 cohomologicalO OZ obstruction map, is computed in Lemma 6.25 when c1(ωZ ) belongs to the image of the pullback homomorphism ι∗ : H2(X, Q) H2(Z, Q) via the embedding ι : Z X. The homomorphism ι∗ necessarily has rank 1 in this→ case and we have → t(λ, λ) ℓ(ι ) = span λ + β , ∗OZ { 2 } ∗ ⊥ ∗ where c1(ωZ)= tι (λ) and λ = ker(ι ) (Lemma 6.25). The proof of Theorem 1.7 proceeds as follows. The Hodge decomposition exhibits H∗(X, C) ∗ a b as a module over the ring HT (X) := a,bH (X, T X). The action homomorphism m : ∗ ∗ 2 ⊕ ∧ HT (X) gl(H (X, C)) maps HT (X) into the LLV Lie algebra gC := gX Q C, by [Ve1] (see → ˜ HT ⊗ also [Ta, Prop. 2.9]). Let Σ(F ) be the image of ker obsF via the graded Duflo automorphism ∗ 2 of HT (X) given by contraction with √td . Then m : HT (X) gC maps Σ(˜ F ) into the X → stabilizer gC,v(F ) in gC of the Mukai vector v(F ) of F (see [Hua], or Lemma 6.10). We prove ˜ that m(Σ(F )) and its complex conjugate generate gC,v(F ), if the rank of obsF is 1 (Lemma 6.7). 2 Composing m with the action of gC on H(X, C) yields a homomorphism from HT (X) into gl(H(X, C)). Evaluation at a holomorphic 2-form on X, considered as an element of H(X, C), gives rise to a homomorphism µ : HT 2(X)e H(X, C) which pulls back the pairing on H(X, C) → to onee on HT 2(X), canonical up to a scalar (Lemma 6.3). We get the line Σ(˜ F )⊥ in HTe 2(X) orthogonal to Σ(˜ F ) and we set ℓ(F ) := µ Σ(˜ Fe )⊥ . We show that ℓ(F ) is defined overe Q and gC,v(F ) is the complexification of the subalgebra ofgX annihilating ℓ(F ) (Lemma 6.9). In Section 8 we include a conjectural discussion of the following.
Question 1.8. Let X be a projective irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold. Which lines in H(X, Q) are of the form ℓ(F ), for some object F which has a rank 1 cohomological obstruction map? e Very little is known even for X of K3[2]-deformation type. The question is related to the existence of lagrangian surfaces in the generic polarized such X. When ι : Z X is an ∗ 2 2 → embedding of a smooth lagrangian surface, ι : H (X, Q) H (Z, Q) has rank 1, and c1(ωZ ) ∗ → belongs to its image, then ι∗ι L has a rank 1 cohomological obstruction map for every line bundle L on X, by Lemma 7.3. We show that for a primitive polarization L, the existence of such a lagrangian surface, which locally deform with all deformations of (X,L), implies that the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki self-intersection 2d := (c1(L), c1(L)) of L satisfies the following arithmetic constraint: d/ gcd(3, d) is a perfect square. See Lemma 7.6 for a more detailed statement involving stronger arithmetic constraints. 8 EYAL MARKMAN
Equivalences of derived categories of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds of K3[n] deformation type are morphisms of a groupoid K3[n], i.e., a category all of whose morphisms are isomorphisms. We have the functor [n] : K3[1] K3[n], sending a K3 surface S to its Hilbert [n] → scheme S and sending equivalences of derived categories Φ : S1 S2 to the equivalences [n] b [n] b [n] → Φ : D (S1 ) D (S2 ) as in Theorems 1.4 and 1.6 above (see Section 4 for the definition). Let LLV be the→ groupoid, whose objects are irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds and whose morphisms are isometries of their rational LLV lattices. Taelman’s work gives rise to a functor H : K3[n] LLV . The values of the composite functor H [n] on morphisms are not → [n] ◦ [n] [n] equal to those one may naively expect. In Section 13 we consider a particular example of a reflexive torsion free sheaf E, which has a rank 1 cohomological obstruction map and with a positive LLV line ℓ(E). Let X be a cubic fourfold. The Fano variety of lines F (X) on X is holomorphic symplectic of K3[2]-type, by [BD]. The Fano variety F (C) of lines on a hyperplane section C of X is a lagrangian surface in F (X) and F (C) has a rank 1 cohomological obstruction map, by Lemma 7.3. We exhibit reflexive torsion fOree sheaves E, which are Fourier- Mukai images of . Each E thus has a rank 1 cohomological obstruction map. We expect OF (C) E to be slope-stable with respect to classes in an open subcone of the ample cone of F (X). Once proven, E would be modular, by Theorem 1.2. Results of [LSV, Vo2] suggest that the irreducible component M containing E of the moduli space of slope-stable sheaves on F (X) is birational to an irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold of O’Grady10 deformation type. A possibly naive hope is that this would lead to a description of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds M of O’Grady10 deformation type as moduli spaces of hyperholomorphic sheaves on holomorphic symplectic manifolds Y of K3[2]-deformation type. A program of constructing irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds as such moduli spaces is described in [Ve5]. Such VECTOR BUNDLES ON A HYPER-KAHLER¨ MANIFOLD WITH A RANK 1 OBSTRUCTION MAP 9 a modular description would enable the study of the cohomology ring of M via a universal sheaf on Y M. A modular description is currently provided only for the complement of an exceptional× divisor of a resolution M of singularities of a moduli space of sheaves on a K3 surface [O3]. 2. Real (p,p)-classes which remain of Hodge type to first order in all directions In Section 2.1 we review the action of the Looijenga-Lunts-Verbitsky Lie algebra on the cohomology of an irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold X. In Section 2.2 we prove that if a real cohomology class of Hodge type (p,p) on such X remains a (p,p) class under all first order classical deformations of X, then it remains a (p,p) class under all K¨ahler deformations of X.
2.1. The rational LLV lattice. Let U be the even unimodular rank 2 lattice with basis α, β { } consisting of isotropic elements satisfying (α, β)= 1. Set UQ := U Z Q. Following Taelman − ⊗ [Ta, Sec. 3.1] we define the rational LLV lattice3 of a 2n-dimensional irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold X to be the orthogonal direct sum 2 (2.1) H˜ (X, Q) := H (X, Q) UQ, ⊕ where the bilinear pairing on the first direct summand is the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki (BBF) pairing normalized so that (2n)! λ2n = c (λ, λ)n, λ H2(X, Q), X 2nn! ∀ ∈ ZX where the Fujiki constant cX is a positive rational number such that the pairing ( , ) is integral, primitive, and positive on K¨ahler classes [O4, Sec. 2.1]. The Fujiki constant is• calculated• for all known irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds in [Ra]. If X is of K3[n]-type, then cX = 1, and if X is a deformation equivalent to a generalized Kummer of dimension 2n, then 2 cX = n+1. We endow H˜ (X, Q) with a weight 0 Hodge structure extending that of H (X, Q(1)) so that classes in UQ are of type (0, 0).
3Taelman calls this vector space the Rational Mukai lattice. We prefer to distinguish it from C˘ald˘araru’s Mukai lattice defined in [Ca2, Ca3]. LLV is short for Looijenga-Lunts-Verbitsky, as this vector space first appears in their work [LL, Ve3] 10 EYAL MARKMAN
2 Set g := so(H˜ (X, Q)). Let g¯ be the subalgebra so(H (X, Q)) of g annihilating UQ. Given a class λ H2(X, Q) denote by e the element of g given by ∈ λ (2.2) e (α)= λ, e (λ′) = (λ, λ′)β, λ′ H2(X, Q), and e (β) = 0. λ λ ∀ ∈ λ Example 2.1. Let X be the Hilbert scheme S[n] of length n subschemes of a K3 surface S. Let π : S[n] S(n) be the Hilbert Chow morphism. The composition of the isomorphism → H2(S, Z) = H2(Sn, Z)Sn = H2(S(n), Z) with π∗ : H2(S(n), Z) H2(S[n], Z) induces an iso- ∼ ∼ → metric embedding ι of H2(S, Z) into H2(S[n], Z) [Be]. Hence, there exists a unique extension of ι to an isometric embedding, denoted by ι as well, of H˜ (S, Q) into H˜ (S[n], Q) satisfying ι e = e ι, for all λ H2(S, Z). It satisfies ι(α)= α and ι(β)= β. ◦ λ ι(λ) ◦ ∈ ∗ ∗ k Let h : H (X, Q) H (X, Q) be the degree operator acting by k dimC(X) on H (X, Q). 2→ ∗ ∗ − Given a class ω H (X, Q), denote by Lω : H (X, Q) H (X, Q) the operator of cup product ∈ → ∗ ∗ with ω. Explicitly, we have [L , Λ ]= h, [L , h] = 2L , and [Λ , h]= 2Λ . w w w w w − w We say that (L , h, Λ ) is an sl -triple with respect to h. The set of classes ω H2(X, Q), for ω ω 2 ∈ which there exists a necessarily unique operator Λw satisfying the above relations, is a Zariski dense subset of H2(X, Q), by the Jacobson-Morozov Theorem. Theorem 2.2. ([LL, Prop. 4.5] and [Ve3]) There exists a unique isomorphism between the ∗ Lie algebra g := so(H˜ (X, Q)) and the subalgebra of gl(H (X, Q)) generated by all sl2-triples 2 (Lω, h, Λω), ω H (X, Q), which sends eλ to Lλ. The subalgebra of g preserving the grading of H∗(X, Q) is∈g¯ Qh. ⊕ The isomorphism in the above theorem is proved by Verbitsky and Looijenga-Luntz over R, but their proof goes through over Q [GKLR, Theorem 2.7].
2.2. Real (p,p)-classes. Let X be an irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold. Lemma 2.3. Let α Hp,p(X, R) be a real class of Hodge type (p,p). Assume that α remains of Hodge type under∈ all first order deformations of X as a complex manifold. Then α remains of Hodge type under every K¨ahler deformation of X. Proof. Let I be the complex structure of X and let (2.3) f : H∗(X, R) H∗(X, R) I → p,q be the Hodge operator acting on H (X,I) by (q p)√ 1. Then fI belongs to g¯R := g¯ Q R, by [Ve1, Theorem 8.1]. Every K¨ahler deformation− of an− irreducible holomorphic symplectic⊗ manifold is an irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold [Be]. Hence, if the class α is g¯- invariant, then it remains of Hodge type under every K¨ahler deformation. We prove the g¯- invariance of α in two steps. Step 1: The class α belongs to the kernel of all homomorphisms in the image of the natural homomorphism H1(X,TX) Hom(Hp,p(X),Hp−1,p+1(X)), → VECTOR BUNDLES ON A HYPER-KAHLER¨ MANIFOLD WITH A RANK 1 OBSTRUCTION MAP 11 since α remains of Hodge type under all first order deformations. The above homomorphism is the restriction of the contraction homomorphism ι : H1(X,TX) Hom(H∗(X, C),H∗(X, C)), → where ι , η H1(X,TX), maps Hp,q(X) to Hp−1,q+1(X). The image of the homomorphism ι η ∈ is contained in the subalgebra g¯C, by [GKLR, Lemma 4.5], so that ι factors through a homo- morphism 1 ˜ι : H (X,TX) g¯C, → which we recall next4. Fix a K¨ahler metric on X, let I be the complex structure on X and let ωI := g(I , ) be the fundamental form. We get the twistor data consisting of complex structures J and• • K, compatible with g and satisfying the quaternionic relations IJ = K, as well as the K¨ahler forms ωJ := g(J( ), ) and ωK := g(K( ), ), such that σ := ωJ + √ 1ωK is a global holomorphic (2, 0)-form on• •X with respect to• the• complex structure I [Be].− Let ∗ LI gl(H (X, C)) be cup product with ωI , define LJ and LK similarly, and let ΛI , ΛJ , and Λ ∈be the adjoint Lefschetz operators. Set Λ := 1 (Λ √ 1Λ ). Given η H1(X,TX), let K σ 2 J − − K ∈ Lιη(σ) be cup product with the (1, 1)-class ιη(σ). Then ιη = [Lιη(σ), Λσ] and the latter belongs 1 to g¯C, so that ι factors through the homomorphism ˜ι sending η H (X,TX) to [L , Λ ], ∈ ιη(σ) σ by [GKLR, Lemma 4.5]. The Lie algebra so(H1,1(X)) is the subspace of Hom[H1,1(X),H1,1(X)] of anti-self-dual ho- momorphisms with respect to the BBF-pairing. The one-dimensional Lie algebra so(H2,0(X) H0,2(X)) is characterized similarly. Elements of so(H2,0(X) H0,2(X)) have traceless diagonal⊕ matrices in the basis σ, σ¯ . The complex structure I induces⊕ a weight zero Hodge structure on 2 C { } 1,1 g¯C ∼= so(H (X, )), the Hodge decomposition is so(H (X))-invariant, and the Hodge direct summands are the following so(H1,1(X))-modules:
−1,1 2,0 1,1 g¯ ∼= Hom(H (X),H (X)), 0,0 1,1 2,0 0,2 g¯ ∼= so(H (X)) so(H (X) H (X)) 1,−1 0,2 ⊕1,1 ⊕ g¯ ∼= Hom(H (X),H (X)). Note that Hom(H2,0(X),H1,1(X)) is isomorphic to Hom(H1,1(X),H0,2(X)) via the BBF pairing and g¯−1,1 is embedded in the direct sum of the two. A similar remark holds for g¯1,−1. The image of ι is equal to g¯−1,1 and so α is infinitesimally invariant with respect to g¯−1,1, i.e., annihilated by it. The class α is assumed to be real. Hence, it is invariant with respect to the complex conjugate subalgebra g¯1,−1. It remains to prove that the two Lie subalgebras g¯−1,1 1,−1 and g¯ generate g¯C. Step 2: The Lie bracket induces the following homomorphism of so(H1,1(X))-modules:
(2.4) g¯−1,1 g¯1,−1 g¯0,0. ⊗ → Normalize σ so that (σ, σ¯) = 1. We have (ι (σ), ι (σ)) = (σ, ι (ι (σ))), since ι belongs to η1 η2 − η1 η2 η1 g¯C, and ι (ι (σ)) is a scalar multiple ofσ ¯. We conclude that ι (ι (σ)) = (ι (σ), ι (σ))¯σ. η1 η2 η1 η2 − η1 η2 Given η H1(T X), letι ¯ ( ) := ι (¯) be the complex conjugate element. Note that ι (¯σ) = 0 ∈ η • η • η
4 2 The homomorphism ˜ι is extended in Corollary 6.2 below to a homomorphism HT (X) → gC. 12 EYAL MARKMAN andι ¯ (σ) = 0. The following equalities thus hold for all η , η , η H1(T X). η 1 2 3 ∈
[ιη1 , ι¯η2 ](σ) = (ιη2 (σ), ιη1 (σ))σ, [ι , ι¯ ](¯σ) = (ι (σ), ι (σ))¯σ, η1 η2 − η1 η2 [ι , ι¯ ](ι (σ)) = (ι (σ), ι (σ))ι (σ) + (ι (σ), ι (σ))ι (σ). η1 η2 η3 − η2 η3 η1 η1 η3 η2 1 Choose η H (T X) so that ιη(σ) is a non-isotropic real (1, 1) class of self intersection t. We ∈ 1,1 see that [ιη, ι¯η](σ)= tσ, [ιη, ι¯η](¯σ)= tσ¯, and [ιη, ι¯η] annihilates H (X). Hence, [ιη, ι¯η] spans the trivial so(H1,1(X)) submodule so−(Hom[H2,0(X) H0,2(X)), and so the latter is contained in the image of (2.4). ⊕ Choose non-zero elements η , η H1(T X), so that each of ω := ι (σ), i = 1, 2, is real and 1 2 ∈ i ηi (ω1,ω2) = 0. Then [ιη1 , ι¯η2 ] annihilates both σ andσ ¯ and [ιη1 , ι¯η2 ](ω)= (ω2,ω)ω1 + (ω1,ω)ω2, 1,1 1,1 − for all ω H (X). Thus, [ιη1 , ι¯η2 ] is a non-zero element of so(H (X)). Thus, the image of (2.4) must∈ contain the irreducible so(H1,1(X))-submodule so(H1,1(X)) as well. Remark 2.4. The analogue of Lemma 2.3 when X is a n-dimensional complex torus holds as well, except that the conclusion is that the real (p,p) class α must vanish if 0
