Assistant Project Coordinator

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area is one of the world's largest national parks in an urban area, encompassing 80,000 acres of California coastal landscape and visited by 17 million people each year. These parklands add immeasurably to the quality of life in the Bay Area. The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (Parks Conservancy) is the non-profit partner of this national park. The Parks Conservancy works with the National Park Service on projects to preserve and restore habitat, rehabilitate trails and trail corridors, improve facilities for park visitors, and protect special status species during these projects.

Position Overview: This is a temporary, fulltime position starting in February of 2020. Currently, we have two years of funding for this position, with the goal of continuing this position based on securing additional funding. The Assistant Project Coordinator will be supervised by the Park Stewardship Restoration Manager while the workplan and day-to-day activities will be directed by the National Park Service (NPS) Wildlife Ecologist and two NPS Biologists. This position is responsible for implementing a range of activities pertaining to the translocation project which seeks to enhance Mission blue populations and protect host plant habitat across multiple sites in San Mateo and Marin Counties within the GGNRA. In addition, this position may be asked to provide support for a range of wildlife monitoring, management, and habitat enhancement projects, outside the Mission blue butterfly flight season.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: • Coordinate and communicate with other Parks Conservancy and NPS staff and interns as need to manage logistics and staffing needs for field activities pertaining to the Mission blue butterfly translocation project • Help capture and translocate Mission blue butterflies from San Bruno Mountain to other sites within the GGNRA. • Manage all monitoring data and enter data onto pre-defined datasheets. • Coordinate lupine seed collection efforts at sites within the GGNRA and other state or federally managed lands. • Survey lupines for Mission blue butterfly eggs and larvae at translocated sites. • Map populations of lupine habitat using GPS and use GIS to create maps for project planning, implementation, and reporting. • Support lupine planting, seeding, watering, and caretaking at Milagra Ridge, Sweeney Ridge, and the . • Analyze data and prepare summary reports. • Develop and manage contracts to complete restoration actions (planting, invasive plant control, etc) that enhance MBB habitat. • Maintain good communication and positive working relations with agency staff and external partners. • Work with field staff, interns, and volunteers to implement restoration projects including invasive species removal, revegetation, mapping and monitoring. • Control invasive species using hand tools, power tools, and herbicide • Complete daily work logs, herbicide use logs, and work performed forms. • Provide additional support to other Parks Conservancy and NPS staff as needed. • Provide support for managing contractors. • Other natural resource management duties as timing permits and as assigned (training will be provided).

Experience and Education: • Bachelor’s Degree in biology/environmental science or related field or equivalent experience. • 1 + years experience in field application of ecological restoration techniques, including invasive plant control, and revegetation. • 1 + years experience in GIS applications and GPS data collection. • Experience with wildlife or vegetation monitoring. • Experience training and leading volunteers, interns or staff. • Experience working in and around federally listed species and associated habitats a plus. • Experience managing and working with contractors to complete restoration work a plus. • Current California Department of Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicator Certificate a plus.

Skills and Abilities: • Computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google calendars, and Google Drive. • Demonstrates experience working independently to complete field work. • Demonstrates attention to detail, accuracy, and thoroughness. • Ability to write clearly and informatively and adjust writing style to meet specific needs. Experience writing scientific or technical reports a plus. • Ability to enter, analyze, and display data using Excel. Physical Requirements and Work Environments: • Work is performed in an office and outdoor setting. • Must enjoy working outdoors in various weather conditions. • Must be willing to work in poison oak. Personal protective equipment against poison oak will be provided, but exposure to poison oak will happen and is unavoidable. • Must be comfortable working around ticks and yellow-jacket wasps. • Ability to carries and lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. • Must have clean driving record to operate vehicles as required. Compensation for this position is commensurate with work experience, skills and educational background.

Primary office will be at the Marin Headlands office in Fort Cronkhite with occasional days from or offices (San Francisco).

Work schedule is Monday – Friday; full-time, some flexibility required.

Pay rate for this position ranges from $22.19/hour to $27/hour, depending on skills and experience.
