CRISSY FIELD an Abandoned Airfield, Transformed Into One of San Francisco’S Signature Places Report to the Community Since 1981, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy has established itself as one of America’s leading park nonprofits—creating and enhancing places that delight, inspire, nurture, and protect. Our sincere gratitude goes out to our partners, donors, members, volunteers, and supporters like you. THE PRESIDIO The birthplace of San Francisco, reborn as a thriving, one-of-a-kind national park CRISSY FIELD An abandoned airfield, transformed into one of San Francisco’s signature places MORI POINT A heavily scarred coastal site, restored as a haven for rare and endangered species FORT BAKER A dilapidated Army base, repurposed as the first national park lodge of a new century LANDS END A forgotten corner of the city, revitalized as an ecological and recreational treasure MT. TAMALPAIS An icon menaced by climate change and habitat loss, protected by a collaborative effort Across the “roof” of the recently finished Presidio Parkway and on adjacent parklands, the Tunnel Tops—designed by James Corner Field Operations—will include a “zocalo” (a main gathering space), a “learning landscape” for young people, and meandering paths. This transformative project is supported by a lead gift from the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation. James Corner Field Operations IT’S VERY EXCITING: WE’RE ACTUALLY IN A NEW GOLDEN AGE OF PARK DESIGN AND CREATION IN AMERICAN CITIES. IT’S THE KIND OF THING WE HAVEN’T SEEN SINCE FREDERICK LAW OLMSTED AND CALVERT VAUX IN THE MID-1800S AND THE WORKS PROGRESS ADMINISTRATION IN THE 1930S. —Adrian Benepe, Director of City Park Development, The Trust for Public Land, in Land+People THE NEXT CHAPTER AT GOLDEN GATE The Tunnel Top parklands—14 acres connecting the Presidio Main Post with Crissy Field— inherit the Parks Conservancy’s 35-year legacy of transforming formerly lifeless sites into vibrant places. This extraordinary civic project, led by the Presidio Trust and guided by extensive community consultation, will place the Bay Area and our Golden Gate National Parks at the forefront of a global movement to boldly reimagine public spaces. In the pages of our 2016 Report to the Community, we pay tribute to inspirational parklands across the globe, reflect on innovation here at Golden Gate—and celebrate your generous James Corner Field Operations support for park-making projects past, present, and future. Our deep gratitude to the following lead donors to this defining civic project: the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, the Fisher Family, the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Fund, the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, Mark and Mauree Jane Perry, the Hellman Foundation, and the Koret Foundation. l In addition, we extend our thanks to members of our community and of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy for their early gifts to this new parkland, opening in 2019, which connects Crissy Field to the Presidio. The area at the western edge of San Francisco which was to become Ocean Beach was one of the earliest amusement resorts on the West Coast. This area, which included once famous landmarks including the Cliff House, Sutro Baths and Museum and Playland-at-the-Beach, began as a 19th Century squatter’s settlement known as “Mooneysville-by-the-Sea.” The Cliff House has been through five major incarnations since its beginnings in 1858. That year, Samuel Brannan, a prosperous ex-Mormon elder from Maine, bought lumber salvaged from a ship that foundered on the basalt cliffs below for $1,500. With this material he built the first Cliff House. The second Cliff House was built for Captain Junius G.

State of California Natural Resources Agency Primary# DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION HRI # Trinomial CONTINUATION SHEET Property Name: __California Historical Landmarks Associated with the Ohlone-Portolá Heritage Trail______ Page __1___ of __36__ B10. Statement of Significance (continued): The following Statement of Significance establishes the common historic context for California Historical Landmarks associated with the October-November 1769 expedition of Gaspar de Portolá through what is now San Mateo County, as part of a larger expedition through the southern San Francisco Bay region, encountering different Ohlone communities, known as the Ohlone-Portolá Heritage Trail. This context establishes the significance of these landmark sites as California Historical Landmarks for their association with an individual having a profound influence on the history of California, Gaspar de Portolá, and a group having a profound influence on the history of California, the Ohlone people, both associated with the Portolá Expedition Camp at Expedition. This context amends seven California Historical Landmarks, and creates two new California Historical Landmark nominations. The Statement of Significance applies to the following California Historical Landmarks, updating their names and historic contexts. Each meets the requirements of California PRC 5024.1(2) regarding review of state historical landmarks preceding #770, and the criteria necessary for listing as California Historical Landmarks. Because these landmarks indicate sites with no extant

  • Fort Baker Waterfront Partners Boat Shop RFQ Response Summary
Fort Baker Waterfront Partners Boat Shop RFQ Response Summary Proposed Concept, Program and Activities Fort Baker Waterfront Partners LLC (“Fort Baker Waterfront Partners”), a yet to be formed California limited liability company, intends to develop the Fort Baker Boat Shop consistent with the goals set forth in the original 1998 Fort Baker Plan and 1999 Final Environmental Impact Statement. It is contemplated that Equity Community Builders LLC and Passport Resorts LLC will be members and managers of Fort Baker Waterfront Partners and that its other members will include local individuals as well as both nonprofit and for-profit organizations committed to furthering the mission of the National Park Service and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The planning documents mentioned above outlined a vision for the Fort Baker waterfront as a center for “community meeting and program space with supporting food and beverage service, bicycle rental, restroom and other visitor activities.” Fort Baker Waterfront Partners proposes to fulfill that vision by rehabilitating the Boat Shop and adjacent buildings into a variety of meeting and gathering spaces, a general store, bar and grill, and public serving marina. We intend to meet all of the NPS’s objectives for the project including a sensitive rehabilitation of these historic resources, guided by our experience with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Rehabilitation of Historic Places, providing year round access to them by the public to enjoy our affordable food and beverages, meeting spaces and educational programs, and designing it, financing it and operating it in a manner that respects the NPS’s mission to “preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations”.

Sutro Baths: A San Francisco Must See | 1 The Sutro Baths was a large, privately owned public saltwater swimming pool complex in the Lands End area of the Outer Richmond District in western San Francisco, California. Built in 1896, it is located near the Cliff House, Seal Rocks, and Sutro Heights Park. The facility burned down in June 1966 and is now in ruins. The site is within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the Sutro Historic District. To know I am walking along stones built so long ago was such a satisfactory and fulfilling feeling that made me think of how wonderful it would be to see this amazing establishment rebuilt. Also in reading the history of Sutro Baths you began to realize how unreal it is that Sutro’s properties were constantly burning down as if God wasn’t going to allow him to effortlessly benefit from the land he took from the indigenous people known as The Yelamu Ohlone tribe. © 2018 AUDRA MICHELLE Sutro Baths: A San Francisco Must See | 5 @audraamichelle The Yelamu lived at Lands End before Spanish settlement began in 1776. After the Gold Rush, entrepreneurs designed the new Cliff House as a fashionable resort for the wealthy.
