Vartanantz Church Sunday School. The dinner took place in Aramian Auditorium, under the auspices of His Eminence, Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan. Gifts from the Sunday School Students The Honorable Haiganush Bedrosian, Chief Judge of the RI Family Court representing the Ladies’ Guild GOSPEL Mark 12:35-44 Whose son is the Christ? While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, “How is it that the teachers of the law say that the Christ is the son of David? David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared: “The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.” David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son? The large crowd listened to him with delight. As he taught, Jesus said, “Watch out for teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted in marketplaces, and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such men will be punished severely.” The Widow’s Offering Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything – all she had to live on.” (On Page 1005 in your Bible) EPISTLE Galatians 2:1-10 Paul accepted by the Apostles Fourteen years later I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. I took Titus along also. I went in response to a revelation and set before them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. But I did this privately to those who seemed to be leaders, for fear that I was running or had run my race in vain. Yet not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek. This matter arose because some false brothers had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves. We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might remain with you. As for those who seemed to be important—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not judge by external appearance—those men added nothing to my message. On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the Gentiles, just as Peter had been to the Jews. For God, who was at work in the ministry of Peter as an apostle to the Jews, was also at work in my ministry as an apostle to the Gentiles. James, Peter and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews. All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do. While there, he enjoyed a lovely dinner and evening with Stephanie and Ari Killian and their daughter, Aline. Der Kapriel and Aline Killian (granddaughter of Anto and Carol Mesrobian) at the home of Stephanie and Ari Killian. It was a beautiful evening for everyone. From the October 8th issue of Crossroads FEAST OF THE HOLY TRANSLATORS This Saturday, October 10, the Armenian Church commemorates the Feast of the Holy Translators, one of the most beloved feasts. There are, in fact, two such commemorations in our liturgical calendar. One is on the Thursday following the fourth Sunday after Pentecost, which can occur in June or July; the other is on the second Saturday of October. The October commemoration focuses on the creation of the Armenian alphabet (406) and on the accomplishments of the Holy Translators. Mesrob Mashdots, the founder of the alphabet, and Catholicos Sahag, together with some of their students, translated the Bible. Schools were opened and the works of world-renowned scholars were translated. Their work gave the Armenian Church a distinct national identity. In modern times the entire month of October has been designated as a “Month of Culture.” Armenians throughout the Diaspora and Armenia mark this with cultural events not only in remembrance of the past, but in celebration of modern-day scholars, theologians, writers, and translators. Specifically remembered this Saturday along with Mesrob and Sahag, are: Yeghishe, a renowned student of Sahag and Mesrob, who served as secretary to Vartan Mamigonian and who wrote the great history of the Vartanantz wars; Movses of Khoren, another student of Sahag and Mesrob, who is revered as the father of Armenian history; David the Invincible, a student of Movses, received most of his education in Athens, where he was given the title “Invincible” because of his brilliance in philosophy; Gregory of Narek, who is considered the greatest poet of the Armenian nation and its first and greatest mystic; and Nerses Shnorhali, a great writer, musician, theologian, and ecumenist. With the creation of the Armenian alphabet and the translations that followed, this group of scholars transformed the course of Armenian history forever. It is an affirmation of the popular aphorism, “The Pen is Mightier than the Sword.” The holy translators, like stewards, were interpreters of the divine Scriptures by inventing letters by means of which are preserved on earth as living words for the shepherd flock of the New Israel, praise God with a sweet sounding hymn. They looked on the greatness of earthly glory as on darkness and having put their hope in the immortal bridegroom they were made worthy of the kingdom of heaven; praise God with a sweet-sounding song.

This woman is so pleased with what has been done that she is opening up her home and has designed the permanent sign which will be placed in the Armenian section. Nearly two hundred disciples of St. Mesrob Mashtots and St. Sahak are known by the general group name “Holy Translators”. The disciples of the above mentioned group of Holy Translators are known as “ Junior Translators”. Celebrating this feast, the Armenian Apostolic Church pays tribute of respect to the bright memory of St. Mesrob Mashtots, Yeghishe, Moses of Khoronk, philosopher Davit Anhaght, whose sacred work and mission later has been continued on by St. Gregory of Narek and St. Nerses the Gracious.     University of Sheffield The Book of Sirach in The Armenian Biblical Tradition: Yakob Nalean and His Commentary on Sirach Rev. Garegin (Tatul) Hambardzumyan Thesis is Submitted For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Biblical Studies 2014 ABSTRACT The extreme complexity of Sirach’s text at times makes it almost impossible to come to one clear conclusion as regards certain issues. There are numerous differences between various translations of this deuterocanonical text. In addition, the Armenian translation, being a textual witness to not one but multiple parent texts, has its own complications. This research provides a sustained theological reading of the Armenian text of Sirach on the basis of Yakob Nalean’s commentary written in the 18th century. At the same time it places a great emphasis on the textual evaluation of the various versions of Sirach in Armenian. In this respect an attempt has been made to display the unique features of the Armenian Sirach within the wider scope of the scholarship of this biblical text. Through a comprehensive linguistic and theological analysis of some major parts of Sirach in Armenian, this study assesses the extent to which this book was in use amongst Armenians throughout the centuries. In particular, the numerous references to Sirach in both Armenian and non-Armenian patristic literature are examined, with the aim of dating the first translations into Armenian and tracing the development of the text in the Armenian medieval schools. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS As Ben Sira himself would have put it, ‘Let us now sing the praises of famous men’. Mesrob and Sahag include Yeghishe, who served St. Vartan as secretary and wrote a history of the Battle of Vartanantz. He also wrote many biblical commentaries. Another important student was Movses of Khoren also known as the father of Armenian history. He wrote a number of histories and poems. A student of Movses was Tavit the Invincible, renowned for his genius in philosophy. He translated works of Plato and Aristotle.

For each window, the scene depicted will be researched to determine the story or event from the Bible with which it represents, as well as the meaning of specific symbols used. Much of the research will be conducted online through religious articles and websites, interviews with the local priest, and the local Gordon Library at WPI. The aesthetic and emotional value of the windows to the parishioners will be evaluated, and the impact on the parishioners of knowing the stories behind the scenes depicted in the stained-glass windows will be assessed. The results of the research project will be documented in an educational brochure for print and electronic format. i Executive Summary The Armenian Community of the Church of Our Savior located on Salisbury Street is a thriving Armenian American Community. The Church has beautiful stained-glass windows depicting many biblical scenes.

Luke was a physician. In the 4th chapter of Paul’s letter to the Colossians (4:14), Paul calls Luke a doctor. Luke also uses “medical language” in Acts 28:8. Luke was a beloved doctor. He not only healed people as his job, but the words in his gospel heal our hearts when we read them.

    THE PARIKIAN COLLECTION OF EARLY ARMENIAN PRINTING AT ETON COLLEGE LIBRARY THE PARIKIAN COLLECTION OF EARLY ARMENIAN PRINTING AT ETON COLLEGE LIBRARY Eton College Library is perhaps an unexpected place to find significant holdings of early Armenian printing: a collection of some 650 volumes bequeathed by the Anglo-Armenian violinist Manoug Parikian (1920-1987). The collection had until now been the largest uncatalogued collection of early Armenian printing assembled by a private individual outside an institution, with the exception of the collection of Armenian books presented to Wadham College, Oxford by Dr Caro Owen Minasian of Isfahan in 1972. In a 1988 letter to Paul Quarrie, then Eton College Librarian, C.J.F. Dowsett, the first Calouste Gulbenkian Professor of Armenian Studies at Oxford, wrote, ‘I must congratulate Eton on the acquisition of Manoug’s important collection. It may help some boys to get a fresh line on passages in Tacitus, Horace, Herodotus and Strabo, and encourage some to take up Oriental studies seriously.’ Nearly 30 years later, to mark the 350th anniversary of the printing of the first Armenian Bible by Oskan Erewants῾i in Amsterdam in 1666-1668, the Parikian collection has now been catalogued by Dr Vrej Nerses Nersessian with the financial support of the Armenian Communities Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Bibliophiles and scholars as well as Eton boys may now explore its riches in an online catalogue available at www.etoncollege.com/CollegeLibraryParikianCollection.
