The fact that the Student Senate is devoid of effective leadersliip and lacking in student support is common knowledge. But then, one cannot expect the student to endorse what in actuality is the pawn of the administration. The Senate's basic dilemma is twofold. Structurally they have no \ decision making vote which makes their capacity as an advisory body impotent. The Senate has not called meetings on a regular basis. The meetings called were very impromptu and the way they were conducted were anything but an exercise in government. The problems of the Senate are ( multi-faceted, yet, future change within it is possible and will come to fruition if the members which comprise this body recognize the responsibilities they have to the people who have elected them. It is obvious that being elected to the Senate carries with it a great deal of prestiege, however, there should be no room within the Senate for people who seek an inflated ego or references for grad school or a career. These, it should be remembered, are mere fringe benefits. What the Senate demands is work, hard work and the perseverence to improve St. Peter's in every area. This presents a challenge to everyone who hopes to become a member of the Senate. It also means that difficult choices will have to be made, and people wiil have to begin the practice of speaking what they believe, and not what they think different factions would like to hear. If Student Senators are not willing to accept this challenge, and the consequences of their actions then there is no place or justification for the existence of the Student Senate on our campus. The Pauw Wow hopes that each candidate for Senate office does Letters To The Editor some deep soul searching in order that he or she be aware of its I responsibilities and the challenge it presents.
