Amphibious plans begin Countdown to war

Story by Cpl. Paul Schneider Meng MmleolliatiVION,

Editor's note: This article is the second in 0 series of three looking at the events that led up to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. On Dec. 5, a special issue of the Hawaii Marine will examine the attack here, as well as other places in the Pacific where Americans were lighting for their lives.

Last week: World War I ends. out harsh reparations against Germany assures a sequel to the World War as Japan's power continues to grow.

There were many people who recognized that the Treaty of Versailles wasn't a perfect document, but most, like President Woodrow Wilson, believed that once it was signed, it could be modified. Few could have imagined the chain of events it would start. The World War I billing as "the war to end all wars" seemed to be true. America lived the good life in the 1920's and reverted back into isolationism - or so it thought. On October 29, 1929, the stock market crashed, plunging America and the entire world into depression. Money in Germany became worthless and the nation could not keep to its reparation payment schedule. In 1933, the desperate climate gave rise to a dynamic new leader, Adolf Hitler. Japan was not spared from economic crisis. Having virtually no natural resources, the island nation depended on the rest of the world to fuel its industry. In an effort to gain scarce natural resources, Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931. It was the beginning of an era of tension between the United States and Japan.

The Roaring Twenties

While America was living the high life during the "Roaring Twenties," the Marine Corps and the rest of the military had a Brigade Marines very different experience. Only a year after the Treaty of Versailles, very little remained of the once mighty American Expeditionary Force which had conduct MOUT helped defeat the Germane. ho a rapidly shrinking military, service commanders were desperately trying to hold onto their budgets and assets. In that climate, the Marine Corps seemed to be a frivolous duplication of the Army. But in the midst of this fight for its life, probably the beet thing that could happen to the Marine Corps occurred on July 1,1920. World War I hero MajGen. John A. Lejeune was appointed commandant. Not only was Lejeune adept at fighting battles against Ger- mans, he was equally adept at fighting battles in Congress. Although it was Commandant Lejeunu's political battles that helped save the Marine Corps, it was his vision of the future which proved critical to molding the shape and scope of his Corps for many years to conic. While many of the leaders in the other services we* basking in the success of World War I, Lejeune was not alone in his vision of the future. In 1922, the Navy commissioned its first aircraft carrier, the US$ Langley and Captain Chester W. Nimitz developed the tactics that integrated the aircraft carrier into surface opera- tions. Although he integrated the aircraft carrier into the fleet, its mission escaped many. Most only saw planes as observers of enemy ships. Once the enemy was discovered, battleships and other combatants would engage the ships like they had done for centuries. Naval thinking changed on a sleepy Sunday morning. While ships of the Pacific Fleet sat in Pearl Harbor, fighters and bombers, launched from aircraft carriers, made a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The date was February 1932 and the attack wal an exercise conducted by the Navy's newest aircraft carriers, the Lexington and Saratoga. Story and photos The exercise showed the offensive power of the aircraft carrier, by Cpl. Paul Schneider but in the Navy, the battleship was still king. Hew. Menne Stet Writer
