Dr. Annie Hesp

Dr. Annie Hesp began teaching at Virginia Tech in 2010, and rarely has an instructor so strongly impacted both students and peers in such a short time.

Dr. Hesp’s research focuses on the Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James), a 500-mile medieval pilgrimage route across Northern Spain, and she has spent several years exploring this area.

Last year, she capitalized on her Camino connections by helping bring to campus actor/director Emilo Estevez and his actor father, Martin Sheen, for a screening of their movie, The Way, which features the same path that she studies.

The concept of pilgrimage holds a special place in her teachings. In addition to offering courses, she accompanies students to Spain to hike for 15 days, with these students living and walking with counterparts from around the world. Balancing daily rigors with class meetings, she engages students in lively discussions on such topics as the influence of Rome and the impact of Franco’s dictatorship. Next summer, she will lead her fourth group of undergraduates in this popular education abroad option.

A central component of Hesp’s research is community formation, which she puts to practical application in the classroom. Students experience this inclusive environment first hand as she creates a welcoming climate where everybody is expected to participate.

Dr. Hesp earned her Ph.D. in Spanish literature at the University of Michigan. She received her master’s degree from Portland State University and her bachelor’s degree from Boise State University.

Dr. Kirk H. Schulz and Dr. Noel Schulz

Drs. Kirk and Noel Schulz are two Virginia Tech alumni who have gone on to become the president of Kansas State University (Kirk Schulz) and the associate dean for research and graduate programs and Paslay Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Kansas State (Noel Schulz). Kirk H. Schulz is the 13th president of Kansas State University, an internationally recognized land-grant university with three campuses and an enrollment exceeding 24,000 students. Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, he grew up in Norfolk and attended Old Dominion University before transferring to Virginia Tech, where he received his bachelor’s degree and Ph.D., both in chemical engineering, in 1986 and 1991, respectively. Shortly after his arrival at Kansas State in 2009, Kirk Schulz implemented the K-State 2025 visionary planning initiative that seeks to place the school among the top 50 public research universities by the year 2025. Since his appointment, he has led the way for increased enrollment, increased private giving, and the establishment of a new campus and graduate degree program in Olathe, Kansas. Kirk Schulz is active in the American Institute for Chemical Engineers and the American Society for Engineering Education. He is a Fellow in both the American Society of Engineering Education and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He also received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 1995. Kirk Schulz was named Virginia Tech Outstanding Young Alumnus in 2000 and received the university’s Graduate Alumni Achievement Award in 2011. Noel Schulz received her bachelor’s and master’s degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech in 1988 and 1990, respectively, and her Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1995. She joined the Kansas State faculty in 2009 and was named associate dean in 2012. Before joining Kansas State, she spent eight years at Mississippi State University where she was the TVA Professor in Power Systems Engineering. She is president of IEEE Power and Energy Society, the world’s largest professional association for the advancement of technology. In addition to more than 19 years as a teacher, Noel Schulz is active in research and outreach. She has graduated 40 master’s degree and 12 Ph.D. students; published 160 papers and two book chapters; and brought in more than $10 million in external research through individual and collaborative projects, including a National Science Foundation CAREER award. Her research interests are in computer applications in power systems, including power system operations, shipboard power systems, and intelligent system applications. In addition to serving as president, she has held numerous other offices in the IEEE Power and Energy Society. She also is a member of Eta Kappa Nu Electrical Engineering Honorary Society, Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), the Society of Women Engineers, and the National Society of Black Engineers. She served on the Board of Directors for ASEE from 2008 to 2010.

The tradition began in the 1911-1912 school session. With the 2012 ring, the Ring Tradition celebrates 101 years. Since the beginning, each Virginia Tech class has designed a ring distinctive and unique to its class. Today, Virginia Tech is one of only a few colleges and universities that redesigns its ring collection each year. Each year, the sophomore class selects a Ring Design Committee responsible for designing and marketing their class ring collection, adding elements that reflect their class experiences on the class side. All ring designs have an eagle and crossed sabers, usually found on the university side and symbolizing the military heritage and traditions of the Corps of Cadets. The chain links that have encircled the ring bezel on Virginia Tech rings since 1940 represent class unity, the strength of many united as one. Beginning in 1991, each class began naming their collection in honor of an outstanding Virginia Tech personality. During each class’s junior year, the collection is unveiled in the fall at the annual Ring Premiere. Rings ordered in fall are delivered the week of Ring Dance, held in the spring of the class’s junior year.

Ring Dance The first Ring Dance was held on April 27, 1934, where the saber arch, ring figure and presentation of the ring by the junior’s date were introduced. The Virginia Tech Ring Dance symbolizes a hallmark in a Virginia Tech student’s career. The university president presides over the official ring presentation. The Corps of Cadets juniors enter the ballroom and form the ring figure in the shape of the class numerals. They are then joined with their dates who are escorted by freshmen corps members. As rings are presented, “Moonlight and V.P.I.,” written in 1942 specifically for the Ring Dance by composer Fred Waring and lyricist Charles Gaynor, is performed. As the clock strikes midnight, the evening ends with an elaborate fireworks display on the Drillfield and the playing of “Silver Taps.” Turning of the Ring For many years, it has been tradition for a current student to wear his/her class ring so that the name Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University faces the wearer. Upon graduation, the ring is turned to face out to let the world know the wearer is a Hokie alumnus/a.
