Despite their ecological importance, we have 17 limited understanding of how microbial communities vary across boreal moss species and the extent to 18 which local environmental conditions may influence the composition of these bacterial communities. 19 We used marker gene sequencing to analyze bacterial communities associated with eight boreal moss 20 species collected near Fairbanks, AK USA. We found that host identity was more important than site in 21 determining bacterial community composition and that mosses harbor diverse lineages of potential N2- 22 fixers as well as an abundance of novel taxa assigned to understudied bacterial phyla (including 23 candidate phylum WPS-2). -

Abiotic Stresses And Its Management In Agriculture D.Vijayalakshmi Assistant Professor, Department of Crop Physiology, TNAU, Coimbatore Introduction In today‘s climate change sceranios, crops are exposed more frequently to episodes of abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, elevated temperature, submergence and nutrient deficiencies. These stresses limit crop production. In recent years, advances in physiology, molecular biology and genetics have greatly improved our understanding of crops response to these stresses and the basis of varietal differences in tolerance. This chapter will clearly define the different abiotic stresses and their impacts on agricultural productivity. Stress – Definitions (i) Physical terms Stress is defined as the force per unit area acting upon a material, inducing strain and leading to dimensional change. More generally, it is used to describe the impact of adverse forces, and this is how it is usually applied to biological systems. (ii) Biological terms In the widest biological sense, stress can be any factor that may produce an adverse effect in individual organisms, populations or communities. Stress is also defined as the overpowering pressure that affects the normal functions of individual life or the conditions in which plants are prevented from fully expressing their genetic potential for 361 growth, development and reproduction (Levitt, 1980; Ernst, 1993). (iii) Agricultural terms Stress is defined as a phenomenon that limits crop productivity or destroys biomass (Grime, 1979). Classification Of Stresses It has become traditional for ecologists, physiologists, and agronomists to divide stresses experienced by plants into two major categories: biotic and abiotic. Biotic stresses originate through interactions between organisms, while abiotic stresses are those that depend on the interaction between organisms and the physical environment. -

However, cattle are also a major reservoir for dangerous foodborne pathogens that belong to the Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) group. Even though STEC infections in humans are rare, they are often lethal, as treatment options are limited. In cattle, STEC infections are typically asymptomatic and STEC is able to survive and persist in the cattle GIT by escaping the immune defenses of the host. Interactions with members of the native gut microbiota can favor or inhibit its persistence in cattle, but research in this direction is still in its infancy. Diet, temperature and season but also industrialized animal husbandry practices have a profound effect on STEC prevalence and the native gut microbiota composition. Thus, exploring the native cattle gut microbiota in depth, its interactions with STEC and the factors that affect them could offer viable solutions against STEC carriage in cattle. Invasive Species: A Study of the Disruption of an Ecosystem’s Dynamics Life Science: Ecosystems, Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics, Grade 7 This unit engages students in an exploration of ecosystem dynamics as seen through the study of invasive species. The unit focuses on the effects of resource availability in an ecosystem and changes in biological or physical components of an ecosystem on organism populations. Students explore how invasive species are introduced and what impact they have on local food webs; and how ecosystems react to the introduction of invasive species. This unit is designed for students in grade 7, using research, models, data analysis, and writing about invasive species to understand changes in an ecosystem. This Model Curriculum Unit is designed to illustrate effective curriculum that lead to expectations outlined in the Draft Revised Science and Technology/Engineering Standards (www.doe.mass.edu/STEM/review.html) as well as the MA Curriculum Frameworks for English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics. This unit includes lesson plans, a Curriculum Embedded Performance Assessment, and related resources. Rogers, Advisor Chapter 1: Lake Vostok is named for the nearby Vostok Station located at 78°28’S, 106°48’E and at an elevation of 3,488 m. The lake is covered by a glacier that is approximately 4 km thick and comprised of 4 different types of ice: meteoric, basal, type 1 accretion ice, and type 2 accretion ice. Six samples were derived from the glacial, basal, and accretion ice of the 5G ice core (depths of 2,149 m; 3,501 m; 3,520 m; 3,540 m; 3,569 m; and 3,585 m) and prepared through several processes. The RNA and DNA were extracted from ultracentrifugally concentrated meltwater samples. From the extracted RNA, cDNA was synthesized so the samples could be further manipulated. Both the cDNA and the DNA were amplified through polymerase chain reaction. Ion Torrent primers were attached to the DNA and cDNA and then prepared to be sequenced. Following sequencing the sequences were analyzed using BLAST. Python and Biopython were then used to collect more data and organize the data for manual curation and analysis. Chapter 2: As a result of the glacier and its geographic location, Lake Vostok is an extreme and unique environment that is often compared to Jupiter’s ice-covered moon, Europa. -

102: Trophic Dynamics CORY C CLEVELAND, ALAN R TOWNSEND AND DIANE M MCKNIGHT Institute of Arctic and Aipine Research, University of Coiorado, Bouider, CO, US The carbon (C) and water cycles are intimately linked in terrestrial ecosystems. Thus, an understanding of the processes regulating transfers of water in terrestrial ecosystems requires an understanding of the carbon cycle, and in particular, the factors constraining carbon movement in the soii-piant-atmo sphere continuum and through trophic levels in ecosystems. The linkages between the C and the water cycles are mediated primarily through biological processes, and are bidirectional in nature. For example, precipitation (and hence ecosystem water avaiiabiiity) strongly regulates plant growth and biogeochemicai cycling in soils. Subsequently, plant growth and soil biogeochemistry strongly influence evaporation and atmospheric water vapor (and hence precipitation). Plant growth and soil processes are also cyciicaiiy linked. Thus, plant and soil interactions can have important implications for water cycling. However, while major climatic variables (including precipitation) may drive biological patterns and processes at large scales, other ecological interactions also regulate both plant and soil processes. An appreciation of these ecological factors is important to understanding the relationship between C and water, and to predicting how global environmental change is likely to affect the interactions between the C and water cycles.
