MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTION OF THE TERRELL FAMILY RECORDS Publication No. 194 Compiled by Colonel Lynch Moore Terrell Ca 1910-1924 This publication has been retyped from the Original Terrell Book published ca 1910 and apparently represents a compilation of letters and papers accumulated over the years by two brothers and their cousin. They were: General William Henry Harrison Terrell 1827-1884 Indianapolis, Indiana. (His brother). Colonel Lynch Moore Terrell 1834-1924 Atlanta Georgia. Their cousin. Hon. Robert Williams Carroll 1820-1895 Cincinnati, Ohio. It is presumed that the Contents of this Book were assembled by Col. Lynch Moore Terrell some time between 1910 and 1924; after the death of Lynch’s brother and cousin. There are, among many other items, five interesting letters written to and from another cousin, Edwin Terrell 1848-1910 (Ambassador to Belgium 1889-1893), San Antonio, Texas. During this period when Edwin was Ambassador, Edwin became acquainted with Joseph Henry Terrell b 1863, Keswick, England. Joseph published in 1904 the best Tyrrell book on the English Terrells. Missing a Beat Bridging Ireland's Orchestral Gaps A Review of Orchestral Provision in Ireland Review of Orchestral Provision in Ireland 1 Introductory note from The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon This note introduces the Report 'Missing a Beat: bridging Ireland's orchestral gaps', from the perspective of the Arts Council. In response to feedback gathered during a major consultation process (2005), in the resulting document, Partnership for the Arts, the Arts Council undertook to “examine national orchestral needs and develop appropriate responses”1. This led to commissioning a review of orchestral provision in late 2007. Much of the primary research was undertaken during 2008 and 2009. The resulting report 'Missing a Beat, Bridging Ireland's Orchestral Gaps' written by Fergus Sheil, was finalised in November 2010. A postscript to the original report was written by the author in May 2012, in order to reflect developments since the original report was completed. This postscript is now appended to the original document. The report offers an overview and analysis of issues affecting orchestral provision in Ireland. It draws upon a wide range of examples of international practice to illustrate what it regards as 'gaps' and to highlight the potential that may exist for development within Ireland. Beyond its usefulness as an important reference document, the report has the potential to stimulate both further dialogue and practical cooperation amongst a broad range of stakeholders within the music sector. In this regard, the report itself notes and anticipates the need for the music sector to develop new models of practice. Embracing such an approach may prove to be essential in terms of ensuring the longer term development and sustainability of orchestral music provision in Ireland. -

His father was an ex-RIC man from Glandore in West Cork and his mother was a teacher who came from a family with a very strong teaching tradition. Dan Donovan went to school in Presentation College in Cork, and later taught there. In first recording, Dan speaks about his involvement with the Irish Dramatic Society, about joining the LDF during the Emergency period and organising the production of plays in the school each year with the students. He fondly recalls Dermot Breen and the growth of the Drama Festival from the 1940s onwards which evolved into the Everyman Theatre. -

REMEMBERING EDOUARD BOROVANSKY AND HIS COMPANY 1939–1959 Marie Ada Couper Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2018 School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne 1 ABSTRACT This project sets out to establish that Edouard Borovansky, an ex-Ballets Russes danseur/ teacher/choreographer/producer, was ‘the father of Australian ballet’. With the backing of J. C. Williamson’s Theatres Limited, he created and maintained a professional ballet company which performed in commercial theatre for almost twenty years. This was a business arrangement, and he received no revenue from either government or private sources. The longevity of the Borovansky Australian Ballet company, under the direction of one person, was a remarkable achievement that has never been officially recognised. The principal intention of this undertaking is to define Borovansky’s proper place in the theatrical history of Australia. Although technically not the first Australian professional ballet company, the Borovansky Australian Ballet outlasted all its rivals until its transformation into the Australian Ballet in the early 1960s, with Borovansky remaining the sole person in charge until his death in 1959. In Australian theatre the 1930s was dominated by variety shows and musical comedies, which had replaced the pantomimes of the 19th century although the annual Christmas pantomime remained on the calendar for many years. Cinemas (referred to as ‘picture theatres’) had all but replaced live theatre as mass entertainment. The extremely rare event of a ballet performance was considered an exotic art reserved for the upper classes. ‘Culture’ was a word dismissed by many Australians as undefinable and generally unattainable because of our colonial heritage, which had long been the focus of English attitudes.
