She started her work for dance at a time when Ireland was impoverished, with scant financial resources for the arts. Yet she had the courage (some thought it foolhardiness) to embark on an extraordinary quest: to bring ballet to people all over the country – the classics, contemporary dance and new works created for her professional company. She was determined to see dance recognised as an essential element of Irish cultural life; she never wavered and never gave up. She was a voyager, a discoverer of new worlds, many of her fine ballets being inspired by her country’s beautiful cultural heritage of dance and story. She took generations of students with her into these realms, inspiring them to believe in themselves, adding colour to their lives and giving them the surety that they would succeed. She gave them a wider spectrum of how to look at the world and, through her example, demonstrated that, in spite of adversity, one can achieve the seemingly impossible. She had the great gift of being able to impart her love of her art to others, and win their support for the cause. Jean Paul Sartre said: ‘Man is not the sum of what he has, but the Domy Reiter-Soffer, Joan Denise Moriarty totality of what he does not yet have, or what he might have’. Joan Denise at a meeting in 1975 Moriarty’s dream has yet to be fulfilled. It is good to see her memory being honoured, her example followed, and her life’s work continued. I had the privilege of her friendship, and remain to this day personally inspired by her artistry and work ethics. She was a woman of intrepid spirit and fortitude of whom Ireland can be proud. Domy Reiter-Soffer, director, choreographer, artist, began his career with Israel Ballet; in 1962 he became a member of Irish Theatre Ballet, Ireland’s first professional ballet company; from 1975-1989 he was choreographer and artistic advisor of Irish A Tribute to Joan Denise Moriarty National Ballet. He has choreographed for television and film; he has created 25 ballets for the Bat-Dor Dance Company of Tel Aviv and recently three full-length ballets for Hong Kong Ballet. He works frequently in the United States with such companies as the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Louisville Ballet, Ohio Ballet; in 2010 Domy Reiter-Soffer Colerado Ballet performed his Beauty and the Beast. His Pomes Penyeach, Yerma, Women, and Oscar – Irish National Ballet’s requiem – will long be remembered by ballet lovers in Ireland. Joan Denise Moriarty – dancer, musician, teacher, choreographer and Domy has created multi-media theatrical productions, directed musicals director – was one of the most important figures in promoting the art (including the very successful Mary Makebelieve in Dublin’s Abbey Theatre) and of dance in Ireland.
