H. Brittain. Following education at Repton School, Rossall School and Worcester College, Oxford (where he achieved third class honours in jurisprudence), he entered training in business at Sheffield. In 1897 he was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple, but did not practice.[1] Journalism Instead he developed an interest in journalism. He became an assistant to Sir William Ingram, managing director of the Illustrated London News.[1] He subsequently worked for Sir Arthur Pearson, founder of the Daily Express. Brittain worked on the staff of The Standard and Evening Standard, two of Pearson's papers.[1] Links with United States Brittain tried to foster closer Anglo-American relations. To this end he founded the Pilgrims Society in 1902. For 17 years, first as honorary secretary and then as chairman, steered the Society through its early life. He resigned the chairmanship in 1918, because of his parliamentary duties, and became its senior vice-president, and the only Pilgrim Emeritus.[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Brittain 1/4 8/9/2019 Harry Brittain - Wikipedia He was also a member of the original Committee of Sulgrave Manor Board, which was set up in 1914 to commemorate 100 years of peace between Great Britain and the United States. In addition to The Pilgrims, Brittain had many close associations with the United States. He was an honorary life member of the American Club, and the Society of Americans in London. The United States entered the First World War on the side of the Allies in 1917. American officers started to come to London, and Brittain took on the task of organising an Officers' Club. King George V, when accompanied by Queen Mary, inspecting the club, expressed surprise that the chairs were so much more sumptuous than he could get for Buckingham Palace. In May 1918 Brittain conducted a U.S. delegation, including a number of labour leaders, to the battlefields of France. The tour included personal visits to senior commanders including General Pershing, the American Commander-in-Chief in France, who paid Brittain high praise for his part in organising the American Officers' Club in London. On 25 January 1972 he was the guest of honour at a dinner to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Pilgrims Society at which were read a message from Queen Elizabeth II and a personal letter to Brittain from the United States President, Richard Milhous Nixon. Commonwealth Press Union In 1909 he organised the First Imperial Press Conference. After the conference, he founded the Empire Press Union (later the Commonwealth Press Union) and lived to see his concept grow into an organisation which included in its membership over 1,500 newspapers and news agencies throughout the Commonwealth.[1] Brittain was an honorary life member of the CPU, attended many of its Quinquennial Conferences, regularly attended all its Council Meetings and Conferences, and in 1959 personally inaugurated its 50th (Golden Jubilee) Annual Conference. Harry Brittain was also an Honorary Member of the Foreign Press Association, the Association of American Correspondents in London and the Institute of Journalists. For many years, until the Anschluss, he was the only foreign Director of the Neue Freie Presse of Vienna. Politics Along with Pearson, Brittain formed the Tariff Reform League. This led him into Conservative politics. At the 1918 general election he received the "coupon" as the Coalition Conservative candidate for the newly created seat of Acton, Middlesex. [1] He won the seat and held it until 1929, when an increase in the industrial working population of the constituency and a swing against the incumbent Conservative government saw him defeated by James Shillaker of the Labour Party. He was also honoured by several continental countries for his international services. He visited 90 countries, crossed the Atlantic by sea more than 70 times and had been entertained in all 50 states of the USA. Family life In 1905 Sir Harry married Alida Luisa, daughter of Sir Robert Harvey, by whom he had one son and one daughter. Created a Dame Commander of the DBE in 1929, Lady Brittain was a harpist, made member of the Celtic Congress (1933) and a Bard of the Gorsedd of Cornwall (Gorseth Kernow), using the name Colom Wyn or White Dove.[2] She died in 1943. After being a widower for 18 years, in 1961 Sir Harry married, secondly, Muriel Leslie Dixon, daughter of the late H. Leslie Dixon.[1] He died, aged 100 years, in Westminster, London.[3] Sir Harry Brittain wrote three books of reminiscences. He was the author of many publications including From Verdun to the Somme, which went through five editions in six days. References 1. I hope that it may clarify the confusion in political thinking which has overtaken many Americans. A confusion and frustration seem- ingly among all classes—rich and poor—and among the various religions. I want to quote for you Ralph Waldo Emerson: — "One of the best ways to remain ignorant is to close your mind to all new thought". The author of -And Men Wept" has dealt with these facts so that the reader may make his own conclusions. We have found it difficult to include some of the names mentioned and hope our many friends and acquaintances will understand that the chips must fall where they may in a book of this nature, even though it is in their own family.

    ARUNDEL CASTLE ARCHIVES Vol IV A CATALOGUE Edited by Francis W Steer Preface Unlike its predecessors, this fourth volume of the catalogue of the archives at Arundel Castle will have to remain in manuscript until either printing costs are reduced or a new and economical process of reproduction is invented. This situation is a matter for regret on two counts as it spoils a series of printed books which have been of assistance to scholars all over the world and it is going to make the definitive edition of the catalogue of this vast collection of archives more difficult for someone to compile in the future. This volume, so far as manuscript permits, follows the style of the other three. It contains (pp1-65) a vast accumulation of records (mainly drafts although some are of special interest and importance) which Messrs Few & Co. (solicitors to the Dukes of Norfolk since 1815) must have transferred to Norfolk House, St James‟s Square, London, over 90 years ago. The documents are in excess of 9,200 and demonstrate, in particular, the litigious character of Bernard Edward, 12th Duke of Norfolk (1765-1842) and the immense amount of work which accrued to his solicitors; they also show the policy with regard to the dispersal and/or consolidation of estates – sometimes to pay off enormous mortgages and at other times to simplify that difficult administration of what was a huge and scattered estate extending into several counties. The catalogue (1965) of the Arundel documents deposited at Sheffield City Library should not be forgotten by students concerned with properties in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

If this is your first read on this organization, I suggest you obtain the introductory background first by reading the December 2004 item in the Archives. (For the rest of you, take note---silver and silver mining will be mentioned around 50 times). If you have followed the series to date, I have other disturbing case material with which to inform you. There is a boatload of fascinating material I hope to acquaint you with. And you should be fiercely interested in this Society---the rich families behind central banking---because they are interested in you, to your great detriment! And they do not wish their identities known; else they’d release a membership list. A movie quote (“They Live” 1988)--- “We could be pets, we could be food, but all we really are is livestock!” The Pilgrims could protest, if they chose to, that I class them as a secret society. Actually they don’t meet the criteria for that definition by every measure that exists. No elitist organization appears to meet that standard, but these things are a matter of relative basis. When not one person in 10,000 has ever heard of an organization that dominates their destiny, it’s secret.

Date …………….. 2 Abstract This thesis chronicles the fortunes of the Anglo-German Fellowship, the British society founded in 1935 that advocated friendship with Hitler’s Germany up to its suspension in October 1939 following the outbreak of war. Drawing on newly discovered and previously overlooked primary sources, thematic and chronological methods are combined to explore how the Fellowship’s leaders played a bigger role in the diplomatic crises of the late 1930s than previously acknowledged. Supported by its sister organisation in Germany, the Fellowship attracted support from British royal, political, diplomatic, aristocratic, business, financial, military, sporting and intelligence elites with its membership reaching nine hundred by 1938. Funded by business and financial interests and patronised by Anglo-German royalty, it was influenced by the German high command, welcomed by elements of the British establishment and infiltrated by British, German, Russian and Jewish intelligence agents. To the extent it has been covered in the secondary literature, those assessing the Fellowship have classed it alongside the nasty, the eccentric and the irrelevant within ‘the Fellow Travellers of the Right’ tradition. This thesis challenges those stereotypes, arguing that it has been consequently misinterpreted and underestimated both by scholars and in popular culture over the last eighty years. Using primary sources to build an objective prosopography of its membership, evidence is offered that the Fellowship was more than a fringe pressure group and dining club and achieved international credibility as a lobbying body, diplomatic intermediary and intelligence- gathering tool.
