3 Oak Park Academy and the Costs Christian Education costs money. But doesn't quality always cost a little more? I wish we could announce that the cost to attend Oak Park Academy for the 1975-76 school year will be less than it was last year. Inasmuch as we are living in an inflationary era, we can't do that. We can, however, do the next best thing and state that the tuition and room and board charges are the same as they were this past second semester, about $9.32 per day or $263 per month for ten months. Now, $263 per month is high. Anyway you turn it, you can't avoid Winterset that fact, and to be candid, to meet the basic needs of the school and to help balance the budget, it should be higher. However, the Vacation Oak Park Academy Board in the interest of holding down the Bible School spiraling costs, has pared faculty and curriculum down to a very basic minimum. Hundreds of public and private schools across the land have faced the same hard decisions in one form or another. Oak Park Academy, however, has some built in advantages that can greatly minimize the out-of-pocket costs for most parents. Many schools do not have the industries that serve Oak Park Academy. The Bake 'N Serve Plant has plans to use 40 - 50 students this fall. During the summer they have been shut down for heavy maintenance and modernization purposes. The academy laundry regularly uses 10 -13 students during the winter, and five or six in the summer. The press uses about eight. The broomshop uses about 15 - 20. Oak Park Manor, a privately owned Seventh-day Adventist Nursing Home, can employ 18 - 22. The cafeteria, maintenance department, janitor service, registrar and business offices will need 20 - 30. The average wage from all these sources is approximately $2.00 per hour. Multiply this times a 16 - 20 hour week, times a four Under the leadership of week month, and you come up with $128-$160 per month of possible DeEtta Mattheis the Winterset work credits toward this $263 charge. Looking toward the world's end, Ad- ventists have not always given the atten- tion to their history that it deserves. Yet history is important, for it contributes to self-iden- tity. Even a cursory examination of Adventism's relatively short history reveals that it is a rich and interesting one. ❑ ADVENTIST HERITAGE shares Dime Tabernacle, Battle Creek with its readers little-known aspects of Adventist history. It seeks to recapture the spirit that moti- vated the pioneers of the movement and to show the significance of that spirit for today. In a time of frantic change and uncertainty, Adventists need to reflect on their past experience. Understanding more of Adventist heritage will add to a person's sense of perspective and provide insight into contemporary situations. D ADVENTIST HERITAGE adheres to high standards of historical scholarship. We feel our history is so important that it should not be available New England Tract Society Office to historians and theologians alone. For this reason, South Lancaster, Massachusetts the magazine is designed to appeal to general readers. D ADVENTIST HERITAGE is written by both professional scholars and free lance writers. Its ar- ticles, pictures, and reviews span the period of Ad- ventism from the early nineteenth century until well into the twentieth. Covering both Seventh-day Adventist and other adventist groups, they indicate the length and breadth of Adventist history. El ADVENTIST HERITAGE appears at a time when many are discovering the fascination and inspiration of Adventist history. We want to share this discovery hoc. with you.
