First edition of Algren’s rare first book which served as the genesis for A Walk on the Wild Side (1956). Signed by Algren on the title page and additionally inscribed by him at a later date (1978) on the front free endpaper: “For Christine and Robert Liska from Nelson Algren June 1978”. Algren has incorporated a drawing of a cat in his inscription. Nelson Ahlgren Abraham was born in Detroit in 1909, and later adopted a modified form of his Swedish grandfather’s name. He grew up in Chicago, and earned a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1931. In 1933, he moved to Texas to find work, and began his literary career living in a derelict gas station. A short story, “So Help Me”, was accepted by Story magazine and led to an advance of $100.00 for his first book.

Terrell, Ben D. Kimpel, T. C. Eaves and Thomas Grieve, with lesser but still very useful contributions by James Wilhelm and Massimo Bacigalupo. More recent work by Chinese scholars Chao-ming Chou, Feng Lan, Haoming Liu, Zhaoming Qian and Rong Ou has given the existing commentary much needed balance. Whether or not a complete gloss of Canto XCIX—the longest canto in Thrones—is possible, let alone either useful or desirable, remains an interesting question I cannot hope to resolve, not least because it seems likely the proper appraisal of Pound’s maverick sinology requires someone with enough linguistic expertise to assess its successes and failures.

IV TIGULLIO ITINERARIES When all France (after the war) was teething and tittering, and busy, oh BUSY , there was ONE temple of QUIET . There was one refuge of the eternal calm that is no longer in the Christian religion. There was one place where you could take your mind and have it sluiced clean, like you can get in the Gulf of Tigullio on a June day on a bathing raft with the sun on the lantern sails. EP on Brancusi’s studio (“Brancusi” 307) Desmond Chute, Portrait of Ezra Pound, Rapallo 1929. 24 TIGULLIO ITINERARIES : EZRA POUND AND FRIENDS Massimo Bacigalupo Rapallo in Brief Tigullio is the name of the gulf at the center of which is Rapallo, limited by Portofino to the south-west and Sestri Levante to the east. Ezra Pound mentions the Tigullio with affection several times in The Cantos , recalling for example a comment by W. B. Yeats during one of their walks: “Sligo in heaven” murmured uncle William when the mist finally settled down on Tigullio. (77/493) The implication is that Yeats, being a man of Irish mists by birth and inclination, was most enthusiastic about the Tigullio when he got to see it on a misty day. On the other hand, EP was very much a sun-worshipper, in Venice, then at Lake Garda and finally in Rapallo. The name Tigullio also recurs in the final lines of canto 116, which is as close as EP ever got to writing a finale to The Cantos . The history of Rapallo goes back to the first century A.D., th ough the oldest remains that have been preserved date from circa 1200 (the ruins of the monasteries of San Tommaso and Valle Christi in the valley behind the town).

RSA Journal 14/2003 MASSIMO BACIGALUPO History and the American Poet In the "Preface" to Lyrical Ballads, William Wordsworth remarks: Aristotle, I have been told, hath said, that Poetry is the most philosophic of all writin.g: it is so: its object is truth, not individual and local, but general, and operative. (79) T. S. Eliot quotes this passage in The Use of Poetry and the Use of Criticism, calling it "the new version of Imitation" and I think that it is the best so far" (75). He also comments on Wordsworth's simplicity of statement: I find that "it is so" very exhilarating. For my part, rather than be parroted by a hundred generations, I had rather be neglected and have one man eventually come to my conclusions and say "there is an old author who found this out before I did." (75) Actually, what Aristotle really said is that poetry is more philosophic than history, by which he meant that it is more structured and rational: The poet and the historian differ not by writing in verse or in prose. The work of Herodotus might be put into verse, and it would still be a species of history, with meter no less than without it. The true difference is that one relates what has happened, the other what may happen. Poetry, therefore, is a more philosophical and a higher thing than history: for poetry tends to express the universal, history the particular. (Section I, Part 9) One should bear in mind that for Aristotle poetry was tragedy and epic, but not the lyric.

The Poet Unmasked in the Pisan Cantos
21 THE POET UNMASKED IN THE PISAN CANTOS Kevin Kiely The Pisan Cantos come after the relentless history of the preceding Chinese/Adams Cantos (Randall Jarrell called them “the dullest and prosiest poetry that he has ever written”) (Homberger 348-49). In these new cantos, the tone changes perceptibly, becoming markedly confessional as the poet is unmasked. They are infused with personal reference as well as mystical vision, and the language of self-revelation and self- transcendence becomes dominant. Composed in the aftermath of World War II, the Pisan can - tos portray adversity and mental breakdown as Pound hears and sees ghostly voices, “apparitions against Mt Taishan.” There is a stream of memories from persons and places, and great affection is shown for fellow writers and artists, not overlooking their faults: “and for all that old Ford’s conver - sation was better, / consisting in res non verba , / despite William’s anecdotes, in that Fordie / never dented an idea for a phrase’s sake / and had more humanitas (82/545). (Compare: “But the lot of ’em, Yeats, Possum, Old Wyndham / had no ground to stand on” – 102/748.) He quotes signifi - cant comments on the war: Quaderni di Palazzo Serra 15 (2008): 347-356. 348 Kevin Kiely the guard did not think that the Führer had started it Sergeant XL thought that excess population Demanded slaughter at intervals. (80/519) There are, regrettably, several anti-semitic remarks, though Wendy Flory notes that in these cantos of “over 3,800 lines, there are three anti-semitic passages, totalling thirteen lines” (291).

A new Italian translation of the first extensive installment of the poem, XXX Cantos (1930), appeared in 2012; a previous Italian rendering of the same work, by the poet’s daughter Mary de Rachewiltz, was published in 1961. By comparing representative excerpts of the two translations, this paper discusses different approaches to one source text. While the 1961 target text aimed at concision at the expense of fluency, the 2012 text employs a more colloquial style, attempting to make an arduous and complex work more reader-friendly. However, the two translations adopt the same strategy when rendering the many passages Pound paraphrased from medieval and renaissance Italian writings. Rather than retranslating Pound’s English, they print excerpts from the Italian originals he worked from, with their quaint spellings and often obscure wording. Just as Pound asks his readers and translators to work with him on the texts he presents in the poem, so the translators presuppose a reader who is also a collaborator, and who will be intrigued by the old documents appearing opposite Pound’s modernist paraphrases.

Pound's Fascist Cantos Revisited
ka mate ka ora: a new zealand journal of poetry and poetics Issue 3 March 2007 POUND’S FASCIST CANTOS REVISITED JACK ROSS Nearly ten years ago now, I published a chapbook called Pound’s Fascist Cantos (or, to be precise, Ezra Pound’s Fascist Cantos (72 & 73) together with Rimbaud’s “Poets at Seven Years Old.” Auckland: Perdrix Press, 1997). As the title suggests, the book included an annotated translation of Pound’s two Italian Cantos, with a fairly extensive afterword. Only a few copies were issued – for reasons I will go into below – and it attracted only one review. John O’Connor said of it: Of these two cantos “Provisions” (No. 72) is the more substantial, yet both are of real interest. Of course there is a good deal of Fascist propaganda in them, but there is also a good deal of humanity and insight. Not a little of Pound’s strictures on “Usura” (international capitalism) rings true at this point in history. That Pound promoted the rest of his ideology of hate in these poems is to be regretted. Yet he is one of the major figures of twentieth century poetry. However odious some of the contents may be, we need these translations to form a complete picture of his major work. Be it said that Ross’s versions are alive with Pound’s energy and convictions; they spark and jar as only he can when presenting his mishmash of incompatibles forced into a type of coherence by the intensity of his poetic genius. It is a tribute to Jack Ross and an indication of his capability as a translator that these pieces stand fresh and intelligent even in their perversity, a perversity of which Ross is acutely aware (O’Connor, 126).
