  • Deliver Us to Cinema: the Prince of Egypt and Cinematic Depictions of Religious Texts
Deliver Us to Cinema: The Prince of Egypt and Cinematic Depictions of Religious Texts Kadii Lott Introduction There is a pervasive Hollywood culture of appropriating and commodifying biblical concepts and imagery into films that do not explicitly address the Abrahamic belief systems that consider the Old and New Testaments as sacred texts. Many such films received mixed reviews. Christian and Jewish groups have heavily criticised particular adaptations of scriptural stories, including Life of Brian,1 The Last Temptation of Christ,2 The Passion of Christ,3 and Noah,4 for their blasphemous or ill-intentioned treatment of biblical figures. Despite the protectiveness of religious people Kadii Lott received First Class Honours in Studies in Religion at the University of Sydney in 2020. 1 The 1979 religious satire reimagined the fictional life of a man named Brian who gets mistaken for Jesus. The film was considered blasphemous by some Christians who protested against the release and the film was banned in many countries upon its release, including in Ireland and Norway. See Ben Dowell, ‘BBC to dramatise unholy row over Monty Python’s Life of Brian’, The Guardian (21 June 2011), https://www.theguardian.com/media/ 2011/jun/21/bbc-monty-python-life-of-brian. Accessed 13 July 2020. 2 Scorsese’s depicted Jesus Christ dealing with worldly temptations like everyone else. This caused outrage amongst some Christian groups, even leading to an incident in Paris where a theatre showing the film was set on fire. See Steven Greenhouse, ‘Police Suspect Arson In Fire at Paris Theater’, The New York Times (25 October 1988), p.

VOLUME 38 NUMBER 1 •TORICAL SOCIETY OF WISCONSIN Here is portrayed a lazy-hazy autumnal landscape, on the threshold of winter, drenched, no doubt, with the pungent odor of Indian summer's ivoodsmoke. This is one of thousands of glorious pastoral scenes well- known and well-loved in Wisconsin. The sea and the mountain states have their admirers, too, but if you were ON THE COVER: asked to choose the loveliest spot on earth, would you not reply: ^'Make mine Wisconsin"? This picture, taken by Richard Vesey, Madison, was given honorable mention in the Society's Photographic Competition, 1950. It is Simpson's Valley, northeast of Richland Center, in southwestern Wisconsin. Feel free to link to this archive. Send questions to [email protected] SECTION 1 – SONGS – Background Prince of Egypt: Subject Matter Influence Music? Question: How did the subject matter influence your choice of musical 'style' or 'flavor' for Prince of Egypt? Does it contain any 'middle eastern' type of sound? Answer from Stephen Schwartz: The locale and period of PRINCE OF EGYPT absolutely influenced the sound of the music. I wanted to come up with a sound for the songs that was accessible to a contemporary audience but at the same time was redolent of both Egyptian and Hebraic flavors. When I'm working on a score set in a specific place and time, I try to prepare by listening to and playing on the piano a lot of source music; then when I start to write, I don't think about it consciously, but the influence in my unconscious is certainly there. Thus, in the same way that I prepared for writing THE BAKER'S WIFE score by listening to and playing on the piano Debussy, Edith Piaf songs and French folk music, or for my upcoming Disney TV project GEPPETTO by listening to and playing Verdi, Rossini, Nino Rota and Italian folk songs, for PRINCE OF EGYPT I used Hebrew folk records, tapes of ancient Egyptian court music, and even pop tapes I picked up in Cairo on a research trip to Egypt.

(NASDAQ: DWA) is an American animation studio based in Glendale, California that creates animated feature films, television program and online virtual worlds. They have released a total of 22 feature films, including Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon series. Although the studio also made traditionally animated films about serious subjects earlier, such as The Prince of Egypt, Joseph: King of Dreams, The Road to El Dorado, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, most of their computer-generated films and television series have now gained the studio a reputation for being focused on popular culture and satire. The studio was formed by the merger of the feature animation division of DreamWorks and Pacific Data Images (PDI). Originally formed under the banner of DreamWorks in 1997 by some of Amblin Entertainment's former animation branch Amblimation alumni, it was spun off into a separate public company in 2004. DreamWorks Animation currently maintains two campuses: the original DreamWorks feature animation studio in Glendale, California and the PDI studio in Redwood City, California. Films produced by DreamWorks Animation are currently distributed worldwide by Paramount Pictures, a subsidiary of Viacom, who acquired the DreamWorks live-action studio in February 2006, spinning it off again in 2008. History The PDI/DreamWorks Studio in Redwood City, California 1994–2004 On October 12, 1994, DreamWorks SKG was formed and founded by a trio of entertainment players, director and producer Steven Spielberg, music executive David Geffen, and former Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg.
