Jeffrey Katzenberg had frequently suggested an animated adaptation of the 1956 film The Ten Commandments while working for The Walt Disney Company, and he decided to put the idea into production after founding DreamWorks Pictures in 1994. To make this inaugural project, DreamWorks employed artists who had worked for Walt Disney Feature Animation and Amblimation, totaling a crew of 350 people from 34 different countries. The film has a blend of traditional animation and computer-generated imagery, created using software from Toon Boom Animation and Silicon Graphics. The film was released in theaters on December 18, 1998, and on home video on September 14, 1999. Reviews were generally positive, with critics praising the animation, music, and voice work. The film went on to gross over $218 million worldwide in theaters, which made it the most successful non-Disney animated feature at the time. The film's success led to the the development of a stage adaptation. [7][8] The song "When You Believe" became a commercially successful single in a pop version performed by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, and went on to win Best Original Song at the 1999 Academy Awards. • Deliver Us to Cinema: the Prince of Egypt and Cinematic Depictions of Religious Texts
Deliver Us to Cinema: The Prince of Egypt and Cinematic Depictions of Religious Texts Kadii Lott Introduction There is a pervasive Hollywood culture of appropriating and commodifying biblical concepts and imagery into films that do not explicitly address the Abrahamic belief systems that consider the Old and New Testaments as sacred texts. Many such films received mixed reviews. Christian and Jewish groups have heavily criticised particular adaptations of scriptural stories, including Life of Brian,1 The Last Temptation of Christ,2 The Passion of Christ,3 and Noah,4 for their blasphemous or ill-intentioned treatment of biblical figures. Despite the protectiveness of religious people Kadii Lott received First Class Honours in Studies in Religion at the University of Sydney in 2020. 1 The 1979 religious satire reimagined the fictional life of a man named Brian who gets mistaken for Jesus. The film was considered blasphemous by some Christians who protested against the release and the film was banned in many countries upon its release, including in Ireland and Norway. See Ben Dowell, ‘BBC to dramatise unholy row over Monty Python’s Life of Brian’, The Guardian (21 June 2011), https://www.theguardian.com/media/ 2011/jun/21/bbc-monty-python-life-of-brian. Accessed 13 July 2020. 2 Scorsese’s depicted Jesus Christ dealing with worldly temptations like everyone else. This caused outrage amongst some Christian groups, even leading to an incident in Paris where a theatre showing the film was set on fire. See Steven Greenhouse, ‘Police Suspect Arson In Fire at Paris Theater’, The New York Times (25 October 1988), p.

Spurred by its role as one of the seven originating theaters of D.C.'s Women's Voices Theater Festival, Arena Stage has embraced a commitment to inclusion with a season featuring seven titles by women, six playwrights of color and five female directors. On assembling the lineup Smith shares, "Arena has such a smart and diverse audience, so it is always a challenge to ensure everyone is energized. This season we leaned into that challenge and are welcoming a host of extremely talented artists both returning and new. This season is a celebration of Arena's broad shoulders, from our Lillian Hellman Festival, a Lorraine Hansberry classic and the gold-standard musical to world-premiere political dramas, a comedy and a new musical. The Mead Center was designed to have these different audiences unite in our flowing lobby, and I'm eager to experience this throughout our dynamic season." The season kicks off in July with the original world-premiere musical Born for This: The BeBe Winans Story by six- time Grammy Award winner BeBe Winans and veteran Arena Stage playwright/director Charles Randolph-Wright. Featuring new music by BeBe, the musical chronicles the early days of his career with sister CeCe and will star their niece and nephew, siblings Deborah Joy Winans and Juan Winans.

October 18, 2013 Music Business in Detroit: Estimating the Size of the Music Industry in the Motor City Prepared by: Anderson Economic Group, LLC Colby Spencer Cesaro, Senior Analyst Alex Rosaen, Senior Consultant Lauren Branneman, Senior Analyst Forward by: Patrick L. Foreword I'm pleased to share with readers of Crain's Detroit Business, as well as with others in the Detroit region, this first-of-its-kind study of the business of music in southeast Michigan. Everyone that grew up in this area knows of the "Motown sound," as well as the heritage of jazz, blues, and rock that has steeped into our culture. Many of us are also aware of the more recent innovations of techno and hip-hop, much of which has roots in Detroit. However, until now there has been no systematic analysis of the business of music in our area. Our Anderson Economic Group consultants have combed census and other business records; examined the geographic pattern of nightclubs and perfor- mance venues; scanned demographic patterns for concentrations of heavy enter- tainment consumers; and even conducted primary research into the days/nights of live music available to metro Detroiters at over two hundred specific bars, taverns, and clubs. What we have assembled is a thorough analysis of an indus- try that has always been important to our culture, but can now also be known for its contributions to our employment and earnings.

from Kirk Ward blog - worshipinthecity.wordpress.com/2012/10/25/101-congregational-worship-songs-in-the-gospel-style 101 Congregational Worship Songs in the Gospel Style A friend of mine asked for help with leads on where to get good congregational songs for worship in the Gospel style. I did a quick Planning Center filter of our songs at New City Fellowship and then cut it down to a solid 101. I organized it by artist and I apologize for any spelling errors in names or miss-matched artists. I decided to connect the song with the best recording not as much with the composer or original artist. I recommend YouTube as a place to hear all of this music. This is not supposed to be “the best,” but just a good place to start. Question: How did the subject matter influence your choice of musical 'style' or 'flavor' for Prince of Egypt? Does it contain any 'middle eastern' type of sound? Answer from Stephen Schwartz: The locale and period of PRINCE OF EGYPT absolutely influenced the sound of the music. I wanted to come up with a sound for the songs that was accessible to a contemporary audience but at the same time was redolent of both Egyptian and Hebraic flavors. When I'm working on a score set in a specific place and time, I try to prepare by listening to and playing on the piano a lot of source music; then when I start to write, I don't think about it consciously, but the influence in my unconscious is certainly there. Thus, in the same way that I prepared for writing THE BAKER'S WIFE score by listening to and playing on the piano Debussy, Edith Piaf songs and French folk music, or for my upcoming Disney TV project GEPPETTO by listening to and playing Verdi, Rossini, Nino Rota and Italian folk songs, for PRINCE OF EGYPT I used Hebrew folk records, tapes of ancient Egyptian court music, and even pop tapes I picked up in Cairo on a research trip to Egypt.
