In the early hours of January 31st (Japan time), an emergency committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the occurrences of pneumonia linked to the 2019 novel coronavirus in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, constituted a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. In light of this state of affairs, the 2019 novel coronavirus has been named a ‘designated infectious disease’ under the Infectious Disease Law, and as a ‘quarantinable infectious disease’ under the Quarantine Law. As of February 6th, the 2019 novel coronavirus has not been confirmed as spreading within Japan. Citizens should continue to take measures against the spread of disease as for colds and seasonal influenza, such as wearing masks and washing hands regularly and thoroughly. If you have returned to or entered Japan from Hubei Province, or if you have had contact with someone who has returned to or entered Japan from Hubei Province, if you have symptoms such as a cough or a fever, please take measures such as wearing a mask, contact the Public Health Center shown below in advance, and have yourself examined. In addition, if having yourself examined at a medical facility, please inform the staff in advance that you have been staying in Hubei Province or that you have been in contact with someone who has been staying in Hubei Province.
