transformation from a kingdom to a republic in 1946 and the reestablishment of the italian mission in 1966 there has been a virtual explosion of articles published in italy concerning the church of jesus christ of latter day saints hundreds of magazine and newspaper articles have appeared in the italian press as well as a scattering of books and pamphlets nevertheless fewer books containing references to the church were published in italy during the last twentyfivetwenty five years than in the preceding one hundred years I1 many ofthese earlier books do not appear in chad J flakes mormon bibliography and its ten year supplement 2 which attempt to identify all books published concerning the church from 1830 to 1930 some of these works were published by the latter day saints themselves after the establishment ofthe short lived italian mission 1850 1867 others were published by italian travelers to the american west after the completion ofthe transcontinental railroad and a few are translations of accounts written by british french and german authors the remaining books and articles were published by those who had never visited utah but still had opinions con- cerning the church arrangements to publish a tract he had written especially for the mission 3 la voix de josephjoseph4josepha4 was pub- lished in french because elder snow commenced his mission among the waldensiansWaldensians who were located in the kingdom of sardinia and spoke french as did most of the inhabitants of piedmont 5 in order to publish the book in turin the capital of the kingdom which eventually absorbed the rest of the peninsula and became the kingdom of italy in 1861 elder snow placed a woodcut of a catholic nun anchor lamp and cross on the first page and on the last noahsmoahs ark the dove and the olive 1166 no work according to elder snow was permitted to be published which attacks the principles of catholicism 7 that same year another work by elder snow exposition des pamphlet he had written while serving as a missionary in great britain ten years earlier 9 for the first year of the italian mission these were the only missionary tracts which were circulated in italy the second pamphlet was republished by T B H stenhouse after his arrival in geneva to organize the swiss mission 10 the publication of elder snows pamphlets provoked two swiss nationals to write responses which were distributed in piedmont louis favez wrote a 46 page tract which advanced the spaulding theory and quoted from la voix de joseph and exposition des premiers principes nI1 I1 while emile guers wrote a pamphlet in which he compared mormonism and irvingism and criticized the corpus vile of elder snows paltry pamphlets 12 these pamphlets caused T B H stenhouse to respond with a third church tract which was also criticized in subsequent writings by favez and guers 1113 at the same time john C bennetts anti monnonmormon book the history of the saints 14 was also circulating in italy during his first six months in italy lorenzo snow wrote five letters to church officials which recounted the history of the mission and the general reaction of the waldensiansWaldensians to the elders message he published these letters in a tract entitled the italian mission in january 1851 when he returned to great britain to supervise the translation of the book of mormon into italian 15 one of these letters had previously been published in the millennial star 16 and all were later included in eliza R snow smith biography and family record of lorenzo snow 17 some also appeared in the italian mission he proceeded with an italian translation published in london of the book of monnonmormon 19 although approximately 1000 copies were published only 192 were actually bound in 185218521818 of which were presentation copies 20 the remaining copies were not bound until 1927 and 1930 the same period the church of jesus christ Bickertonbickertonitesites published its own italian translation of the book of mormon 21 in 1852 the italian mission also published an italian translation of elder snows exposition des premiers principesprincipes2222 of which no copies apparently survive of the three tracts and one book published in 1851 52 la voix de joseph was most often mentioned by missionaries as being useful in attracting new converts in his manuscript history jabez woodardwoodard232123 described one early convert as a firm believer in the voice of joseph the official announcement of polygamy led to criticisms by favez guers bennett and other early critics and in italy influenced the image of the church which was confined to the waldensian community living in piedmont stephan malan one of the earliest converts to the church in italy and the first local missionary wrote in his autobiography and family record that the waldensian ministers announced to the people that the latter day saint missionaries were a set of liars that they were wolves in sheepscheeps clothing that they were hired by brigham young to convert them as a bait to bring them to western deserts of america and the recruits would be slaves and your young women taken possession by that infamous polygamist and his associates to satiate their lust and debauchery 12152152424 such tactics did not always work however woodard when finding they were trying to ex- cite prejudice in that way went again and preached plurality to the father and the result was as it will ever be to an honest mind the house soon became the stopping place for elders and some of the highest names in the church have eaten and slept beneath that hospitable roof 2125 the journals of another early italian missionary samuel francis are also available at the church archives when jabez woodard reported the results of the italian mission to an assembly in the tabernacle in 1854 brigham young observed that the waldensiansWaldensians are only like the brute they are not to blame for their superstition and they are not the people to readily receive the gospel 112126 three years later however after approxi- mately eighty converts had immigrated to utah and all foreign missionaries including those in In January, the executive council, with Box Elder Chapter 5 the approval of the board, reorganized the office Brigham Young Chapter 5 staff. We brought on Heather Davis as our Office Centerville Chapter 6 Manager/Secretary. With the exception of the Cotton Mission Chapter 6 month she took off for maternity leave to bring Grove City Chapter 7 Baby Brother Brigham into this world, she has served us from 9 to 4, Monday through Thursday Jordan River Temple Chapter 7 at the office. Her service has been exemplary, and Maple Mountain Chapter 7 she has removed a great deal of the burden from Mills Chapter 8 members of the executive council and the board. Homer WHEN APOSTLE LORENZO SNOW WAS CALLED in 1849 to "establish a mission in Italy and wherever the spirit should direct/'1 he was initially optimis- tic that the Waldensians, a Protestant group in the Kingdom of Sardinia (Piedmont), would be receptive. Like others, he believed they had "been the means of preserving the doctrines of the gospel in their primitive sim- plicity."2 He hoped that Waldensian converts would spread the gospel message to the larger Catholic population in Piedmont and the other sta- tarelli on the Italian peninsula.3 Snow was disappointed, for the Italian 1.     Rising on the Roman Skyline, Spires of Europe's Largest Mormon Temple Published on iItaly.org (http://ftp.iitaly.org) Rising on the Roman Skyline, Spires of Europe's Largest Mormon Temple Judith Harris (February 25, 2019) The Mormons who first came to Italy from the US in 1850 could never have dreamed that their evangelical heirs would build a huge new temple in Rome itself, with a visitors center and a family history center. Temple inauguration is this March. ROME -- Located in the crowded Buffalota neighborhood north of Rome near a gigantic shopping center, the spires of a huge new Mormon temple make a striking addition to the Roman skyline. To be inaugurated in March, the 40,000-sq. foot building, under construction for a decade, covers 15 acres which include fountains and gardens. Inside is a roomy visitors center plus a family history center that will be open to the public. The entire temple is described as "religious and cultural center," . Of the 162 temples worldwide, this is the 12th to be built in Europe and the very largest; another is to be built in Portugal. The Rome congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the formal name) vaunts 5,000 members while all told Italy hosts some 26,000, scattered in 100 congregations. The relationship with Italy began when a Sardinian immigrant to Boston, Mass., named Giuseppe Taranto, known in the US as "Joseph Toronto", was baptized there and then returned to Italy with two fellow American Mormons in 1849. These early Mormon missionaries were particularly active in Piedmont, where they made proselytes in the Waldensian territory.

    History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Italy During World War II, cut off from communication with the Church, he continued to preach from the Book of Mormon and other Church materials, many of which he translated and shared with his neighbors. After four decades of waiting, Di Francesca was finally baptized on January 18, 1951, in the Mediterranean Sea. The Church was not reestablished in Italy until the 1950s, when a number of Italians learned of the gospel in other coun- tries and returned home to share the message with friends and family. The first Italian-speaking congregations were formed in Brescia and Palermo. In 1966, the Italian Mission was reestablished with headquar- ters in Rome. The Church made steady progress, and between 1970 and 1980, Church membership in Italy increased nearly eightfold. Another milestone was reached in 1981, when the first stake (similar to a diocese) was organized in Italy. Giuseppe Taranto, the son of Francesco Taranto and Angela Fazio, was born on June 25, 1816, in Cagliari on the island of Sardinia. Sometime in his early twenties, he joined the Mediterranean Merchant Service, which was a commercial shipping company that often took 1 him to foreign ports around the world. At one point, he found himself in New Orleans and decided to stay and work there for a while on American ships.     THE MORMON WALDENSIANS INTRODUCTION Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began settling the Rocky Mountain wilderness that would eventually be known as Utah, in July of 1847. Having been driven first from Ohio, then from Missouri, and later from Illinois, the Mormons finally sought sanctuary in the unclaimed regions of the western frontier. Almost from its inception on April 6, 1830 in Fayette, New York, the church had sent missionaries to preach the restored gospel throughout the United States, Canada and England. However, after establishing a permanent settlement in the Great Basin, missionary efforts were intensified and new missions were opened throughout the world. At General Conference in October 1849, thirty-five-year-old Lorenzo Snow, a newly ordained member of the Twelve Apostles, was called to establish an L.D.S. Mission in Italy "and wherever else the spirit should direct." 1 It took Elder Snow and Joseph Toronto, a native Sicilian who accompanied him, over nine months to reach their field of labor. While en route, in Liverpool, Elder Snow read of the Waldensians, Protestant sectarians who had inhabited the Piedmont region of the Cottion Alps for centuries. He was moved by their long struggle for religious freedom and saw many similarities between their simple doctrines and the restored gospel which he had been commissioned to preach. He felt empathy when he read that the Waldensians, like the Mormons, had suffered severe religious persecution and had been forced to seek sanctuary in a mountain retreat. Snow felt impressed enough to begin his missionary efforts in Italy among this simple mountain folk.
