The Thyatira Church Age THE THYATIRA CHURCH AGE 1. Understanding the Timeframe a. This church age begins with the time we call the _____ Ages, and ends around the time of the beginning of the ___________ (500-1000AD) b. The Bible was __________ from the hands of the common man – Ps. 119:30 i. This takes us to the heart of the Dark Ages ii. Roman religious councils completely replace the authority of the Word of God iii. The Roman Catholic Church controlled the world through religion (Every nation wanted to be blessed by God) c. In the Pergamos period, the “church” was married to the world; which produce a counterfeit church. In the Thyatira church period the counterfeit church is married to a political system. – It’s now referred to as the “______ _______ ________” d. This time period also introduces us to man named ________ and a religion called _____ i. He witnessed the idolatrous atrocities of the Roman Catholic Church he wanted to do something about • He claimed that he received a visit from the angel Gabriel • During this visit he was “proclaimed” to be a prophet ii. Ultimately, the followers of Islam would also fall under the heavy hand of the Roman Church iii. We begin to see a pattern develop of error begetting error 2. Understanding the Text – 2:18-29 a. Consider the meaning of the name “Thyatira” – Odor of Affliction i. This time in church history was especially ________ ii. Rome used to persecute Bible believers because they wouldn’t embrace the false gods of _________ – Started with Nero iii. Now Rome is imprisoning, beating, grilling, burning, beheading, impaling, torturing, and killing Bible believers because they would not embrace the false doctrines of the Roman _________ Church b. The Introduction – vs. 18 i. The Son of God – the Son of God, not the son of Mary ii. His eyes are like unto a flame of fire – the all seeing eyes iii. His feet are like fine brass – brass is often associated with God’s judgment c. The Commendation – vs. 19, 24-25 i. God never takes His ____ off of them – vs. 19 38 ii. This group did ____ adopt the doctrine of the woman Jezebel – 24-25 • God always has a _________ of believers who will not bow their knee to the enemy! • This group did ___ suffer like the rest (God protected this group – we’ll see this a little later) d. The Condemnation i. __________ is committing fornication and eating things sacrificed to idols • In verse 2:14 this is referred to as “the doctrine of _______” • In verse 2:20 this is referred to as “that woman ________” ii. When the Bible refers to a “________” in regard to religion, it is always a type of an organized false _________ – Prov. 5:3-7; Rev. 17 iii. The woman “Jezebel” is a religious __________ • Judges 17-18 A Levite is commissioned to be the personal priest and “____” to an Ephraimite man name Micah. The Levite priest uses Micah’s ____ and images as part of their new religion. The tribe of ___ comes along and confiscates the priest for themselves. He leads them to follow the same _______ with his Ephod and Teraphim as they call him “father.” The tribe of Dan is in total apostasy for nearly 1000 years. They end up building a city near Zidon. The Zidonians are worshipers of _____. Dan now dwells near them and mixes in with them as they worship in apostasy with their black robed priests called “father” and their idols and images. • 1Kings 16:29-33 Ahab becomes king of Israel and marries Jezebel who is the ________ of the king of the ZIDONIANS. He then serves Baal. Jezebel apostatizes Israel as she gets them all to worship Baal after the manner of her fathers (who were connected with the tribe and religion of Dan). • 1Kings 18:17-39 This Baal worship, connected with the tribe of Dan, is practiced in Israel. They worshiped the Sun god on Sun day. They had black robed Baalite priests called fathers who mutilated themselves as penance for their sins to their god. Through their penance they try to manipulate their god to get him to do what they want. – Does this sound familiar? • In the OT, Satan used a _______ woman named Jezebel to corrupt Israel by introducing them to a false religious system that had black robed priests called “fathers” who used idols as aids in worship. That false religion was called ________ 39 • In the Thyatira Church Period, Satan used a _______ woman named Jezebel in an attempt to corrupt Biblical truth and dilutes Christianity. This false religion also has black robed priests called “fathers,” who use idols as aids in worship. This false religion is called ______ __________ • In Roman Catholicism, Baal is called Jesus, but he is ____ the Jesus of the Bible. - It is another Jesus that is proclaimed in another gospel, received through another spirit (2Cor. 11:4), and is preached by false apostles (2Cor. 11:13), who are actually Satan’s ministers (2Cor. 11:15) Important Note: • Baalism of the OT __ Roman Catholicism in the NT • They are the exact same system!! iv. The Judgment of “Jezebel” – vs. 21-23 • God gives this religious system the _________ to repent - She will ___ repent - Her future ________ is recorded in Rev. 17-18 in detail • A look at what history records during the Thyatira church period - In 541AD a disease known as the “_____ ______” (Bubonic Plague) began along the commercial trade routes of the Roman Empire - ___ million people were killed - Was this God’s judgment? o Rev. 2:23 o God didn’t do this to them, but rather gave them the wages that they earned - Another point of interest… History records that many Jews and Bible Believers did not die because they were diligent about staying clean – the believed the Bible and lived! – vs. 24-25 e. During this period, there were still _______ believers i. They were often referred to by their enemies as Cathari, Montanists, Novations, Donatists, Euchites, Messalines, Nestorians, Paulicians, Bogomiles, Albigensis, Picards, etc. ii. They would later be called, Waldensees, Anabaptists, Mennonites, Hussites, Brethren, and _________ 3. A Quick Review a. The Ephesus Period began to deviate from the Word of God b. In the Smyrna Period those deviations became false doctrine 40 c. In the Pergamos Period those doctrines were fully developed, and the church married the world and became Papal Rome d. In the Thyatira Period, Papal Rome began her conquest of the world 41 .

MEINARDU S Athens, Greece Some months ago, I revisited the island of Patmos and the sites of the seven churches to which letters are addressed in the second and third chap- ters of the book of Revelation. What follows is a report on such Christian remains as have survived and an indication of the various traditions which have grown up at the eight locations, where, as at so many other places in the Orthodox and Latin world, piety has sought tangible localization. I set out from Piraeus and sailed to the island of Patmos, off the Turkish coast, which had gained its significance because of the enforced exile of God's servant John (Rev. 1:1, 9) and from the acceptance of the Revelation in the NT canon. From the tiny port of Skala, financial and tourist center of Patmos, the road ascends to the 11th century Greek Orthodox monastery of St. John the Theologian. Half way to this mighty fortress monastery, I stopped at the Monastery of the Apocalypse, which enshrines the "Grotto of the Revelation." Throughout the centuries pilgrims have come to this site to receive blessings. When Pitton de Tournefort visited Patmos in 1702, the grotto was a poor hermitage administered by the bishop of Samos. The abbot presented de Tournefort with pieces of rock from the grotto, assuring him that they could expel evil spirits and cure diseases. Nowadays, hundreds of western tourists visit the grotto daily, especially during the summer, and are shown those traditional features which are related in one way or another with the vision of John.

They turned in suspected Christians to the Roman authorities in a practice known as Penna. • To be a Christian in Smyrna & the Empire meant poverty, & persecution and even death in public on display by the most vile and shameful ways imaginable. ➢ 2:12-17 Pergamum • Lesson for us: Do not compromise GOD’S Word. • Pergamum was the Roman capitol of Asia. As such many of the Roman elite actually resided there when not in Rome itself. • Pergamum was full of every vice and sin Rome had to offer. ➢ 2: 18-28 Thyatira • Lesson for us: To reject false teachings & pagan practices.

Their mandate was to remember how it was when first saved, to repent and repeat how it was when they were new to Christ. Remember, repent, repeat SMYRNA - suffering circumstances PERGOMOS - liberal church with a lot of deception. We talked about Balem. Joshua 13:22 tells us how he ended up. He died with the enemies of Israel. THYRATIRA - Pagan worship. Two common mistakes about satan: 1. Assume he doesn’t really exist 2. Imagine that he is like God. He is not all powerful and all knowing. God created satan. He can’t be in more than one place in one time. He has 1/3 of the angels. David Jeremiah’s session on THYRATIRA: I don’t think I’ve ever seen the church of Jesus Christ in such disarray and confusion as it is today. Almost every city is filled with storefront churches of every ilk. Every time someone gets an idea that they want to have a church, they just go rent a building that’s been vacant and start; and some of those are very vibrant and good.

It is also a time to evaluate ourselves and asked what Christ would have us change. What is Christ looking for in our church? Size of our congregation? Number of people saved? Number and kinds of programs we offer? Size of our budget? Style of our music? Size of our missions program? The number of people we have sent into ministry? We see what Christ looks for in a church in Revelation 2-3 Commendations Pergamum- Held fast to His name and didn’t deny the faith. Thyatira- deeds, love, faith, service, perseverance Philadelphia- deeds, kept His word, did not deny His name Condemnations Pergamum and Thyatira- were unwilling to confront false teachers and sexual immorality in the congregation. Sardis and Laodicea- were outwardly successful but spiritually dead. I believe that of all the churches Christ evaluates in Revelation 2-3, we at UBC may be most like the church at Ephesus.     Tuesday Teaching Series Series #13: The Seven Churches of Asia in Revelation Thyatira: The Adulterous Church (Revelation 2:18-29) Tuesday, May 8, 2018 Read Revelation 2:18-29 aloud from 2 translations and The Message. Historical Information about Thyatira Thyatira, seated on the river Hermus, is 38 miles from Pergamos and 32 miles from Sardis. The city was located in the northern part of Lydia of the Roman province of Asia, and bordered Mysia on the north and Lydia on the south. It is conjectured that the name Thyatira is derived from the Greek word ‘thugater’ which means ‘daughter.’ It is said to have gotten its name in 290 B.C. in honor of the birth of King Seleucus I Nicator’s daughter. Thyatira’s modern name is Akhisar (Akhissar), which means a ‘white colored castle.’ Thyatira was a prosperous trading town that was an important location on the Roman road from Pergamos to Laodicea. It also hosted a major cult of the pagan god Apollo (son of Zeus). The city was famous for its dyeing and was a center of the indigo trade. Its trade guilds, for which it was well known, were more organized and in far greater numbers than in any other ancient Asia Minor city. Among its ruins were found inscriptions relating to a guild of dyers. Evidence suggests these artisans made use of the madder-root for making purple-colored dyes. Every artisan in Thyatira belonged to a guild. Guilds were incorporated organizations that could own property in its own name and enter into contracts for construction projects.

The Book of Revelation—2:20-21 (7/29/20) In chapters 2 and 3 Jesus dictates 7 letters to 7 churches in Asia Minor (Turkey)—why these 7 when there were other larger and more important churches than these? It was because these 7 churches contain conditions that could be applied spiritually and practically allowing Jesus to use them to address His Church as a whole throughout history in a way that would be beneficial to its purity and growth going forward. 1. They had a local application These were 7 real churches that existed at that time and these letters were addressed to them by the Lord Jesus as a kind of ‘report card’ to show each of them how they were doing in His sight. 2. They have an historic application These 7 churches, in a symbolic way, speak to different periods of Church history from the Apostolic period (1st century) to the Rapture (close of the Church Age)—and therefore the order they appear in chapters 2 and 3 is significant. 3. They have a timeless application They speak to all churches in all ages and in all places throughout the world—each church having its own distinctive character: Ephesus—the loveless church. Smyrna—the persecuted church. Pergamos—the compromising church. 1 Thyatira—the idolatrous church. Sardis—the dead church. Philadelphia—the faithful church. Laodicea—the apostate church. 4. They have a personal application We are the Church of Jesus Christ not the building. These letters are a ‘mirror’ that every Christian should look into from time to time and use to examine our own individual walk and relationship with the Lord—is it loveless, compromising, dead, faithful, etc.
